    I'm currently in HVAC trade school. This is my fourth month I've learned quite a bit like refrigeration, recharging, brazing, honestly I enjoy the hands on work my biggest struggle reading the wiring diagram but I'm working on it. I plan on getting a job as soon as I pass my EPA and still go to school in the afternoon until I graduate but its honestly fun I like the work, I've always been the type of person to love hands on although it irritates sometimes but overall its fun I'm only 18 my goal is to start getting as much experience as early as possible and move on to my own personal jobs to possibly owning my own company.

    Just my input, having an electrical background or at least a basic knowledge of electrical components will take you a good way into the HVAC field, might even help you get a promotion. If you are also interested in IT, a good HVAC role to get into is an HVAC controls technician because they deal with more of the computerized and networked HVAC systems and having an IT background is a good plus for it since you'd more than likely be dealing with running Ethernet cables in commercial environments to interconnect all of the systems together. Hope this helped shed some light for you.

    HVAC/R is a large field. Hvac pays more than electrical where I'm at. Went from working residential/light commercial service to now refrigeration install at supermarkets. Think HVAC might be a little more recession-proof. Air movement is dirty and inherently needs maintenance. The last company I was at had 10k service contracts with homeowners. According to an older tech, 2008 was record year for service. When people aren't replacing they are fixing, so if you can do both you win either way. An electrician might be a little easier work.

    With HVAC it really depends if you go into a small (non-union) shop or a larger (union) shop. The union shops typically focus on commercial & industrial or some larger residential with minimal households. Though that depends on your State and nearest cities. If you want to get into a union shop you pretty much have to go through their apprenticeship program for 5 years (4 days working, 1 paid day taking classes at the union hall, set payscale for each year, funded pension and guaranteed benefits). If you want to work on larger equipment or specialize in large chillers or boilers and the like then realize only union shops typically have those. Working through an apprentice program requires zero prior classes or experience, though a fundamental understanding will give you a leg up in learning quickly. They do run candidates through an aptitude test to get an idea of a person's general understanding of math, mechanical mechanisms, spatial reasoning and mechanical aptitude (all really generic stuff in their test). work will be lots of filter changing, coil cleaning, coil replacements, replacing bad TX valves, helping a Journeyman. If one goes the union route don't spend the time/ money on HVAC classes if you understand electrical fundamentals, the Union and your shop will teach you everything, its setup to teach people that don't know anything. Get hired on at a shop and work as a driver delivering supplies & equipment to guys in the field until your apprentice program starts, or wait to get into the apprentice program first and have the Union hire you to a company. Lots of positives and negatives to consider with all the options, and where you live.

    Depends on IT it doesn’t have as much security (the high pay is a blessing and a curse)... IT though you will be on feet most days unless this guy meant software development as that is programming (li tried to get into it but sucked at it)... some concepts make sense (self taught)... but overall I struggled with some of it. It’s not for everyone. I’m trying to become a network engineer but will say IT is more of a trade and doesn’t require a degree but will require certifications which you get independently of going to school. You only get a degree if you want to go into management or work at a large corporation.

It’s not as high paying as a software developer/engineer but oh well I hate programming 😂. Figuring out how networks and cyber security work interest me more too.

    if you want to work for somebody go union. If you want to be self-employed with a small operation go residential. HVAC union guys where I'm at make 90k+ with 2 pensions and awesome health insurance. I used to want to be self-employed but after seeing what it takes to run a successful HVAC business Id just rather be apart of a team and be paid well for it. Non-union you have to fight for your raises, and if you aren't a complainer they will always try to keep you down. Typically there is a national union due you pay upfront, like $420 for the year or $30 a month, then they take some off your paycheck for the local union dues. My dues are $1 an hr right now to the local. Not a bad deal. I'm more than willing to pay for representation. Cool thing is that union is like a temp agency, you don't like where your at talk to the union and get in at another shop. Pretty sweet. If you want to work on crazy cutting edge high-end projects, the union is where it's at. Apply now, you might be waiting a while. It's a good job so lots of people apply.

    hey man. I was just wondering what your thoughts are for my situation. So i’m only 22, trying to figure out my career. HVAC and electrian were my go too since you can forsure find work right away but my problem is that i developed tendonitis and have some carpal tunnel shit going on in my hands from lifting weights. My arms also have some type of nerve damage going on so i’ve developed a fear of not being able to lift heavy things when i get older because nerve damage can never get fully fixed. That being said, i was wondering if an electrician would not be the career choice for me if i am already getting symptoms of pain in my hands, wrists and up to my arms at the age of 22. I’m assuming these jobs require 8+ hours a day of constantly lifting and gripping tools and objects which terrifies me for the future since i already feel light pain at such an early age

    Hey Justin I would try to focus on finding a company to co op and get field experience while in school to help you form a better understanding of opportunities that are available as well as job placement after school completion. While in school focus on achieving universal certification, 410 A certification, Nate certification, make sure you have the ability to work on live problems with real equipment and also look into install and service of ductless mini split equipment.

    Im thinking about getting into hvac but at the same time i would love to have an electrician’s license to be able to work on service beyond the hvac limits. My question is, can i use my hvac experience to obtain an electrician’s license? I think in my state (Illinois) I need 2 or 4 years as an apprentice and of course pass the test.

  • @TaddyDigest

    @TaddyDigest

    Good Question I would say yes but it depends on what the application requirements are in your state. For instance.... Do you have to work with someone with a license that will have to list there license # on your application for approval. What is the process for approval? I had to take a test and that was it for me. No required experience at all for the LLE electrician license. But for my CMC general mechanical. There was a pre approval application and then another application.

    Hello. I am a high school student with a really solid GPA right now and have a high chance of getting accepted division 1 college. I thought I want to do engineering but I really do not want to be in an office setting. I would much rather be outside experiencing new things every day. One of my dreams is also to own my own company which is achievable through a trade. I am aware of the upcoming job shortage and the demand of the trade realizing I have the potential to make a lot of money if I were to create a successful company. My questions is, do I still go to college since I have the "book smarts" required, or do I disregard college and enter a trade such as HVAC or Electrician? And if I should go to college, which major do you think is right for me based on my interests and goals?
