It's an antique outdated method.... this type of coiling can not be repeated once the winch is in operation..... nowadays there are grove cut (as per size of the rope) winch drums can be ordered as per requirement....

you can't really tie steel wire rope, you would have to use some sort of end termination or splice. Pushing every two seconds is quicker and easier:)
