Electric Starter Won’t Start! | Bendix Replacement
Спорт
After unloading the Sherco at Twin HIlls Cycle Ranch, my two stroke wouldn't start. The sound was that of an RC Car engine going full blast with no where to go. The electric starter was working, but it wasn't connecting to the flywheel; the bendix needed to be replaced.⚡👕 Seat Time Shirts 👕⚡bit.ly/SeatTimeShop
The Bendix Gear, or Starter Drive, expands to connect the electric starter shaft to the ring gear on the flywheel. And when the bendix breaks, the electric starter on your dirt bike is useless. As more kickstarters are being removed, the question I'm asking is "should the bendix be a piece that can fail so easily?".
Luckily for us DIY mechanics, the replacement of the bendix is fairly simple. You remove the ignition cover (watching for the dowels), slip the broken bendix out, and slip the new bendix back into place. I decided to replace the double pinion starter gear on the Sherco as well, because in the past six years, it looks to have been updated. This added a little bit more complexity to the job on hand, but so far, I haven't screwed anything up 😬.

Great video as always! Wiki -Bendix :A Bendix drive is a type of engagement mechanism used in starter motors of internal combustion engines. It is named after its inventor, Vincent Hugo Bendix.

Hahaha, I did Google that! I just didn’t add that info in the video. The outro was just me being weird. Knowing that info is out there though, probably makes sense to keep the educational learnings in there as well! And THANKS, glad you enjoyed he video!
Nice video, now get that Shercant back on the trail and back to Western Colorado!

THANKS! Enjoy #GettingSeattime & Stay #Stoked! 🤘🏻🤙🏻⚡️
My 18 beta 2T didn’t have a kick starter but I was able to put one on at 400 bucks. I think it was well worthy the $ to upgrade and not get caught in a ditch somewhere with no way to pop start it

I still love this idea. I think this is where we should be at still in all dirt bikes. Street bikes, we’re good. But dirt bikes, which we bang up like a raccoon in a restaurant trash can, they still need the ability to buy a kick starter addition! 🤘🏻🤙🏻⚡️
I have around 110 hours on my Sherco, I've cleaned and greased the bendix maybe twice? Probably will replace the starter/bendix when I get to the next top end rebuild as preventative maintenance. Also, why do you have the external power switch? Is that the solution to roll starting/waking up the ECU?

NO IDEA why it has a literal on/off switch. If you watch the Death March video, it breaks in me and I couldn’t start my bike. Another weird part that they had for awhile, but got removed once the ‘19’s came out. This Bendix probably has around 200-250 hours in it, so good life in my book since it’s only being used during starting of the bike.
Hi, Speedfight2 100, my bendix is just spinning and not coming out do you know why that is ?

Typically if a bendix stops expanding it needs to be replaced.
If my scooter ran but died out while riding can the Bendix cause that issue ? Or is it only used while starting over the engine ?

It’s only there for starting. When the electric starter spins, it spins the bendix, the bendix expands, connects with flywheel and starts moving the components.
Hi bud have u replaced a starter motor and done a video

I haven’t done a starter motor. My best guess would be to check out Highland Cycles channel. Morgan has done a ton, I’m sure!
My Yamaha still has a Kickstarter😂

I hate being excited about that, BUT I AM!
That’s the first one I’ve seen that you don’t have to pull the whole starter motor out?

I think older KTM’s were bad about that, needing to remove the starter. I believe newer KTM’s you can do close to what I did on the Sherco to put a new one in.
Where they actually bearings? KTM use s little bushings for the old 8 to 16 style horrible starting system. You can upgrade to bronze bushings that will actually last. KTM's is similar, but the "sure can't" design looks a bit better. Bendix issues with the KTMs are a thing as well. You take that out with a screw driver. If they are actual bearings then a blind bearing puller with a chuck that fits in there is the ticket. I'd also use the freeze trick on the new ones for installing.

They’re actual little needle bearings! Hella cute, but tiny!!!
