Electric Porsche 928 / Does the V8 still run? Anybody want it? (Ep.3)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If I'm going to get rid of (hopefully sell) the whole petrol-based drivetrain, it'd be good to know if the original V8 runs or not, having sat idle for 20 years. Today we'll find out.
So if you're in Australia and on the lookout for a complete M28/12 Porsche 4.7 litre K-Jetronic V8 engine to suit your pre-1984 Porsche 928, together with an original Getrag six-speed gearbox, torque tube and differential, then let me know!
If you enjoy this video, a LIKE or a COMMENT would be most welcome. Even if you want to hang me for the heresy of converting an old Porsche to electric motive power. Hey, why not even SUBSCRIBE, as I'll be producing a LOT of the 928 conversion content.

So happy you're going in for the idea of the EV8! To convert a 928 has been a dream build of mine for a few years now, so it's exciting seeing someone else do it AND document it like you do. I still haven't found one that fits my criteria before converting, but I hopefully will within a couple of years, so I'll be watching this in the meantime with great interest!! :)

Poor Matt always looks awkward and uncomfortable in front of the camera, but his knowledge is second to none and he definitely comes out of his shell and shines when his head is under the hood!!👌

I think he's enjoying the process. He certainly isn't afraid of challenges and I am very grateful to have him along. He says he enjoys the videos, so maybe he's more comfortable than he appears.

At 5:40 you point out that if there's a short in that line from the alternator to the battery, bad things happen. I can vouch for that! The wiring harness on my '84 wore through in that area and set the alternator and harness on fire. Luckily I had a battery cutoff and a bottle of water, so I got the fire out before it did any further damage. I replace the alternator and the 'front of engine' harness and it's been running strong since.

Well done!! Too good to scrap this motor, but if you do I would like the exhaust for my own '83 928. Keep up the good work!!!

Sorry but it hurts to see a rare manual (even if converted) being lost as an ICE V8 to become white goods🥺. Regardless of that, loving these videos Stu👍

Yes, it's a G28/03/12 with LSD and I believe the 2.75 (shortest) diff ratio. I'm hoping to sell whole drive from torque tube, gearbox, diff, linkages, gear-selector, etc complete. Latest Episode 4 video has more info. and contact details. It's an early type box from the 78-79 models, so please ensure compatibility.

A bit conflicted and “EV” 928. Good that it will stay on the road, but a 928 needs the V8 “rumble”.

  • @inCARnationAustralia

I agree. I see it as essential that an active exhaust be fitted, such as the Milltek system, and as fitted to such cars as the Audi SQ7 V8 models. Tunable sound, takes signal from CAN about throttle, power, etc., and has a sound transducer in a real steel muffler, so the 928 burble, bark and rumble can be shared with neighbours. Will that suffice?

It's deceptive. The Euro spec engines like this one were 10:1 I believe. By 1985 they lowered them with dished pistons when Porsche realised what crap unleaded fuels we had out here. But back in 1983, higher compression.

Given that this car has already been modified in body and mechanicals and some work is clearly dodgy , you might as well strip it and convert it. It has no value as a classic car. It will be interesting to see how the conversion turns out and how it handles.

That's exactly why I chose it for this project Simon. It would never have graced the roads again as it is, with the amount of money it would need. It was destined to be scrap. I'm saving it.

Why don't you just rip the Porsche emblem off the front and stick a Tesla emblem on it?

  • @inCARnationAustralia

    @inCARnationAustralia

    7 ай бұрын

Sorry Mark, definitely no Tesla badging. For the same reason I don't put a Nippondenso badge on my other 928s because they've got Japanese AC compressors. Or a Mercedes badge because the auto box is borrowed from a S-class Benz. It's just one component, albeit an important one. It'll still ride, drive, feel, steer and go around corners like it always did - I want a car that drives just like my other 5 x 928S (6 in total, 4 currently) except with a lot more shove. So no thanks - don't need any more haters

An engine worth saving to help resurrect another more deserved 928 with a stuffed motor. Too much mechanical abuse to save so it is a perfect candidate to covert to BEV. Just make sure you install the artificial exhaust so it still has that V8 burble.

Exactly Stu! Yes I'm hoping the drivetrain from mine will help other stranded 928(s) to get back on the road. And regarding the exhaust - absolutely. It wouldn't be a 928 without the burble.
