Electric Outboard Motor Top Speed Test! How fast are three different motors on my 12 foot boat?

Ойын-сауық

Testing the top speed of three small electric outboard motors: the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus, a 12 volt Minn Kota Riptide 55, and the Newport NT300 electric outboard motors. I am seeing how fast each motor is able to push my light weight little 12 foot aluminum V hull boat with minimal gear on board and whether these 3 horsepower equivalent electric outboards have a higher top speed than a typical trolling motor.

I take each motor up the creek and down the creek in ideal conditions to see how fast I can go with each electric outboard motor to determine the top speeds for each motor on my my smallest boat. If you have a Jon boat, or some other tiny boat, little boat, small boat or dinghy boat - these electric outboards might have enough speed and range for your needs. They can work with 10 foot boats, 12 foot boats, 14 foot boats and probably even some 16 foot boats to get you to the places you want to fish or explore quietly, and with easy operation.

    I use my Epropulsion motor on my 6.2 metre yacht weighing about 1200kg. For most of the time I run the motor at about 300-500W which gives great economy. I only run it at full throttle if I’m against a strong tide or strong headwind. These electric outboards are not about top speed.

    Been waiting for this video wayne, great test! I thought it would be faster. Now when you say trolling motors run out of power faster is kind of false, on my application (enduramax 55lb thrust with the APC prop) I get an average top speed of 4.4mph and it can run for 5.5 full hours on my battery (draws 26 amps from my 35lb 150ah lifepo4 battery). I did a budget trolling motor to electric outboard and got 5mph from it (86lb 24v trolling motor with an APC prop) it's only .2 mph slower than the NT300, draws the same power (42 amps at 24v or 1000w). Your top speed confirmed my research when I was trying to make a trolling motor faster, it's not the actual electric motor, but rather the prop!! Thanks Wayne!!!

    Glad you got to see this one! The Newport is actually a 36 Volt system - not sure if that makes a difference or not.

  • @codyakfishing8856

    @codyakfishing8856

    9 ай бұрын

    @@WayneTheBoatGuy it does, so the higher the voltage, the lower the current draw on a motor under the same load, the nt300 draws about 35amps at full speed, my "trolling motor outboard" draws 42 amps at top speed (5.0mph). Now that seems like my motor draws more overall power but that's false, this is why most companies use watts (volts × amps = watts) so my motor was drawing 1008 watts while the NT300 draws 1260 watts.

    Further to the fact that the Minn Kota's a trolling motor, it's propeller's pitch won't let it exceed the speed you had it at. I suggest a second test where you mount these motors on a much bigger boat and see how they stack up.

  • @omieyouknowme

    @omieyouknowme

    .minnkota is also a brush motor, will run hotter and brushes wear and add a bit of resistance. It is 100 year old technology, you can make the minnkota run faster with a 60a pwm controller and say 24-36v battery. I've done this on a 55lb thrust use it as a kicker yah it shortens it life to push more watts.

    I'm no Wake-Whisperer or anything, but with how much wake you were producing with the NT300, I bet you would have the same experience with a much larger boat. With that said, if you were able to get a different pitch on the prop, I'm sure you could get some more speed out of it on that 12' boat.

    Here is something to consider when looking at electric motors - If you sink, the lithium in the batteries will react with the water. In fact, lithium will burn underwater. It makes a very pretty pink flame when you submerge pure lithium. I have seen it many times, as I worked with lithium for several years. It also makes the water highly caustic. I have personally seen several people receive some pretty nasty chemical burns because they got their hands wet in lithium contaminated water. E-motors, boat or automotive, for all their hype are absolutely not environmentally friendly. They are certainly not something I would put in my boat.

    While I agree with everything you said, leaking pipeline or one busted tanker spewing crude is far more damaging than 1 or 100 lithium batterys that may be exposed to water. There is no right answer everything has a penalty

    The electric outboards are amazing. But for $50 you can find an old 6 hp Johnson evinrude that will push that little boat 15 mph and you will be able to fish and use the boat ALL day long on a 3 gallon can of gas. You don’t need to by $1,000 worth of batteries to run it. I understand small lakes that don’t allow gas motors…..but those old gas outboards are a dime a dozen and they run forever if you take care of them. You could literally buy 30 small outboard motors for what one of those e propulsion motors cost. Just my opinion.
