In the mid-1980s, I used to practically burst into tears whenever I played this song (on a cassette recording of the single I bought in 1984). I had this terrible crush on a girl named Julie for almost two years and when she did finally move away later in 1984, this song finally hit home. Its just too bad this was never released as a single, for at least you might hear it randomly on the radio every once in a while. While it's true I can hear it on KZread whenever I want to, that's not quite the same thing. After all, isn't it nice to be surprised once in a while? I just miss the randomness of things.

Apparently the reason is basically that it conveys the same thing that another song does, but I agree. I think at the very least, bonus tracks should have always been easily available for those who want to listen to them. Fortunately, ELO CDs are good for that. There's some bonus tracks of The Vaccines that I like and have never been released on the CDs. So the only options are to download and lose quality or be dependent on wi-fi and online availability of the songs, which is Not preferable. I will never understand why that's becoming the norm.

They were even more talented but Jeff never wanted to explode their talent to the top. The typical media just sell the idea of Jeff always doing everything which is not true, this kind of energy and exciting songs would have never been in the world if was not due the rest of members who had this willpower, talent, and magic that brought to E.L.O. sound. Jeff Lynne always was great as musician, but he has to recognize the magic and willpower of his bandmates, something he doesn't do from back then up to nowdays. What really gets me about this one is that throughout the whole album - including the start of this song - the protagonist talks to his former lover in the second person - he's still trying to communicate with her. But at the very end, she is referred to in the third person - It's no longer "you" , it's "Julie". And Julie don't live Here Anymore. He's no longer talking to her, but about her. She has moved on, and he has to do the same.

I think this fits in with the story of "Time." Same with all the other bonus tracks in the CD re-release. This one works well as the last track, because in the end, the speaker realises that he will never again be with the one he loves. IMO, the whole album is an analogy of the development of people and how they change through time.

At the time I wasn't buying 45rpm singles, so I never knew about 'Julie Don't Live Here Anymore' being a 'B' side single until the 'Afterglow' CD box set came out in the early 90's. The first time I heard 'Julie' when I bought the 'Afterglow' box set I was blown away. It was one of the best ELO songs I had NEVER heard lol. I did kick myself in the ass however as I could have been enjoying 'Julie Don't Live Here' back in 1981, and the nearly 10 years until I found it with 'Afterglow'.

Probably the best b-side ever, by a long way! Just fantastic! Such a shame Jeff chose Another Heart Breaks on the album instead of this. Huge mistake. Should even have been released as a single (on the a-side then of course)! Whenever I listen to this I get in a good mood, great tune!!

I believe the reason this song was struck from the album is due to it being cut down from a double album to a single album. In the narrative, this song takes place after he has returned to his own time, a little too late. On the released record, it's left kind of ambiguous as to whether he did go back or not. In 21st century man, it's concluded that he is a man who can not function in the future, and it ends somewhat optimistically with hold on tight, which contributes nothing to the story, yet implies there is still hope. What makes all of this especially interesting to me is that the eventually released tracks intended for the second part of the album illustrate that he does return home, but he has still lost his love to time, as he is more than a few years too late as addressed in this song. It's much more depressing. To me, the fact that this song is (in my opinion) the most fun and catchy song recorded for Time makes all of this even more compelling. The juxtaposition is brilliant. I think about this album more than any other I've ever listened to. It can be listened to and enjoyed on a superficial level due to Jeff Lynne's already established magical ability to write fun, creative, and interesting pop music that works no matter what the lyrics are (out of the blue is a beautiful and cohesive album in its music and arrangements, despite the lyrics to many of the songs being more or less a stream of consciousness). What makes Time, to me, his masterpiece is the second layer, the narrative, being both creative and emotionally moving. It rides on empathy. I apologize for making this five year late response so long-winded, I have just been thinking about this album a lot after hearing it for the first time a few months ago, and I needed to get this off my chest. Everyone I know, old or young, loves dismissing ELO as corny and forgettable. As a young man with a boomer's taste in music, discussions of my musical preferences are usually met with general confusion and indifference from people my age, and pleasant surprise from people older than me. For the latter group, it's simply not the case for ELO. Seems they heard too much of them. What a shame. To fresh ears, this music is brilliant and timeless. How fitting. Perhaps ELO was overplayed back in the day, but I refuse to let their legacy fade. Thank you.

I saw the concert from this tour.It was in Detroit. 3 years before, they had played before a crowd of 40,000 at the Siverdome. It had come out that half of the show they were lip-synching. So at this tour, the arena was less than half full. a lot of people held a grudge and missed a great concert. As far as them coming here for this tour, it seems unlikely now.

Quite simply one of the best ELO songs ever! 'Time' is my favourite album and means more to me than words can express, and this song fits perfectly with the concept. Much as I love 'Hold On Tight', that should have been the B-side, and this the penultimate track. Marvellous!

I saw a video. 50 works by Jeff Lynne not on his albums. He did soundtracks to movies. King Ralph that's not little Richard doing good golly Miss Molly. The movie electric dreams. Omgoodness Rich with his music. Let it run. And electric dreams. The list is long. He was as much a genius as the legends. Beethoven Rachmaninov Tchaikovsky. Truly that great. ❤. Roll it over Beethoven and give Tchaikovsky the news yeah. What a ride it's been. Since 1975 for me.

The song is amazing and the lyrics make sense with the story. However, I can see why it wasn't included in the end. If he has a way to find Julie instead of trying to send messages and dreams to the past then it changes the whole story. SHe's older and different but it *is* her and he could see her at any time to tell her at least what happened to him and why he disappeared back then. The only way it works, to me, is to be the closing song for the album. Then it takes a different tone and ultimately makes the album the tragic story that it always seemed to be to me. He does manage to go back to the age he's used to, but undershoots by a year or so and ends up in 82-83 instead of 1982. Julie has moved on, both in her heart and her house. After thinking of only her and wanting to go back, when he ultimately does he'll still never see *his* Julie again.

I got the strong teory that Futurama by Marc Groening is the Album Time's animated series. Think, one song is titled like 2095 a Futurama run on year 3000. Crazy!

i know this is a 3 year old comment but I don’t care, I love this song too much to ignore arguing in favor of it. Based on the original listing, it comes after The Way Life’s Meant To Be, meaning that story wise, the protagonist was still in 2095, meaning if Julie was BORN in 1981, she would be 114. She is certainly dead. Additionally, it’s revealed in The Way Life’s Meant to Be that Satellite 2 is just a new name for his old town. the way Jeff talks about everything he knew being gone means he’s in his old town, just a new version. If he was in a new place entirely, of course everything that he knows would “lie under”. Lastly, the true finale is The Bouncer / Epilogue where it reveals that the protagonist in fact did not leave during the course of Hold On Tight, and only did during epilogue based on the “time travel sounds” that played during it and prologue. All in all you’re wrong and this song slaps and it should have been included

But I think it *would* have been the last track if it was included anyway. The reason it wasn't chosen, as I understand it, was that another song conveyed the same idea and thus was chosen instead. And on the CD that includes this song, I think it is the very last track you hear, so you get that effect.
