Electric Chainsaw Comparison

Stihl or Husky? I'm sure there are other electric saws thast also should be looked and if you use a different ELECTRIC CHAINSAW, let me know what you think of yours. Add some value to this comparision.

*Coming up on having had this saw for a year....am a casual user and bought it to cut up sections for bowl blanks. Easy to start, **Bestfor.Garden** also recommend even after storage for a couple of months. Simple chain tension adjustment. Just cut up some 20" Osage Orange, including ripping bolts in half (at an angle). Like butter!*

Great saw comparison. Thank you. Just a random comment on the Stihl. I just purchased the MSA 161T and have found the three button system my only complaint about the saw. Simple solution: Use a Dremel tool to grind down the guarded area around the side button an 1/8 inch or so. Then you can grab the saw with both hands ( left or right ) and use it comfortably. Random tip for any MSA owners. Thanks for the review.

I'm converting all my yard tools to 60v Greenworks. Couldn't be happier with them! I don't smell like exhaust and need to keep three gas mixtures around. Over time maintenance should be much lower. The trimmer has more torque than my gas model so I can run larger lines that last longer. Once I clear the rest of my pines, I'll probably sell my Husky and get a 60v Greenworks chainsaw for light use. I'll kind of miss the sound of the Husky though! I love starting it up.

Years ago I was inside Costco and saw a rake that I used, and I saw someone pick one up and I said, "that's a good quality rake, it lasts me for at least 6 months". They immediately put it back and walked away. Stupid me. I was using mine every day. The same rake used by a homeowner would last several years. I should have been more clear about how I used mine. That stil one is the one i told you about a year ago. I got to use it for an hour and a half trimming lower branches on pine trees so we could use the area for a carpark. The shop that learnt it to us said they sell them to a lot of builders that use for doing wooden retaining walls and wooden decks where there is limited room for a battery circular saw. They liked the narrow blade because it leaves the cut face on the timber smoother than the wider chain.

Haven't used the Stihl myself, have use the Husky. The battery life is incredible on the chainsaw and the hedgetrimmer and weed trimmer. When it's time to use the blower you can watch the green lights disappear, okay you are using it on for the length of a driveway whatever but there no resistant of any outside force like a branch or hedge or think grass. But the battery life gets sucked away in no time. You could try the waist battery pack, that would lighten the chainsaw etc. but not sure how the balance would then be or maneuverability with a long battery cable reaching to your back getting in the way. Also your loose chain on the Husky after a day and half seems fair, unless it has loosened off again after tightening through the day.

Just a note Blair, when I've run my Husky 536lixp in light rain, or really humid days, the battery doesn't always make good contact with the saw. Leaving it non-functional. Also, I found that storing my charger in a locked, metal job box in the winter, created moister inside the charger case, and it wouldn't charge my batteries. One last small detail, here in Western Colorado, many of the homes that I work at are pre 1960's. With that in mind, a lot of them have locust, ash, cottonwood, or elm trees with branches 4"+ that need trimmed. The saw handles the size well, but most of these homes have no outside electrical outlets, and it can be a challenge to charge the batteries throughout the work day. So, I have to use a truck mounted inverter, or a small generator. Just a few key points I've been evaluation over the last 8 months, or so, of use I've experienced with my Battery saws... Hope that helps!

The husky is a far superior saw. Husky put a lot of thought into that saw. The two rings at the back make it easier to hang off your saddle. I'll fill my husky with oil twice per battery(the big one) it does prefer lighter oil so I end up using veg oil. I carry two batteries on my truck and rarely need a third. The batteries will get filled with schmoo so you have to blow them out periodically. I've found they don't like being in bucket scabbards. It puts too much undue pressure on the battery latch and breaks them eventually. I also feel the battery weight on the back causes the bar to bend in a scabbard. I still have a 200t in the truck but it's been so long since I've used it the fuel might be bad lol.

On quite a few tools with safety buttons, I drilled a hole through the case and the button in the pushed position. So I could keep a little pin in there for easier usage. The great thing is being able to pull it out if there is a chance someone who doesn know about it will use it. Also did this to lock out my miter saw and other tools when I was worried about unsupervised inexperienced people, but with actual locks.

@@arboristBlairGlenn, your statement parallels the chicken-and-egg question. No doubt anyone becomes more efficient with practice. Unfortunately our industry needs to promote dummy proof tools that can benefit everybody from the first time user, to the overworked professional expected to make precision removal cuts from 6 a.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Friday. Similar to multimillion-dollar war jets which are more inherently difficult to control, a benefit to trained individuals who sometimes need to surpass that fine line between control and uncontrol. Compared to hobbyist drones or today's version of the flying wing, which are computer aided allowing weekend novice to become experts. With modernizing tree Care tools, growing numbers of landscapers starting their own tree pruning businesses. And Unlike professionals 30 years ago, these novices have no need for arborist certification. Using electric operated tools cutting man hours substantially, but at the expense of quality. Meaning us roosters & chickens no longer required to produce eggs. And even though experienced professionals can do a way better job than them with these same tools, which also save us time and effort as well. Amateurs have discovered they don't even need to do the job correctly, in fact finding it easier to do it wrong... Regardless if such tools have been engineered to do the job right! Take the chainsaw on a pole or even the weed wacker for that matter. Blunt instruments for piecing out small limbs and whacking blades of grass down to ground level. But the wrong tools for even the best operators, if specifically used for final removal cuts and trimming away grass line surrounding base of trunks. Sure maybe you and I interested in doing a good job. Have the patience to even master such imprecise tools for jobs they weren't even designed for. Such as when I use the shield hood portion to protect from bark damage, when inserted between the trunk and spinning nylon wire. And as pole chainsaw technology has improved bulky clearance between trunk and coller, becoming more similar to quality and Ease of thin manual pole saw. Such advances in technology can also increase potential of already existing problems. For example damage to other parts of tree behind finished cut is even more difficult to prevent when using chainsaw compared to manual blade. My idea temporarily secures a thin rubber mat as a backstop to prevent such unnecessary damage to non-targeted portions of tree. Similarly clamping Jaws added to pole chainsaw unit can act like a miter box. Which can then promote squarest branch removal cut, by securely clamping upon Branch collar evenly on all sides without user input. Even denying improper use when coming in from wrong angle, otherwise resulting in protruding angled stub cut. Or similar to a drill bit sharpener. Rather than making final precision removal cut, by leaving work up to pole chain saw or even traditional equipment for that matter. One can leave poorly angled stub cut remaining. Then just like that cap altar boys use to douse candles resembling shape of a handbell. A mechanical sander housed within such a cap or donut looking tool, can then grind back remaining stub. With tool itself able to determine exactly where Branch collar transitions. Thus in the end, not only making mechanical work easier. Also same time taking opportunity to ease brain energy. Combining to promote better safety as well.
