I haven't played my copy yet, so I can't yet recommend it in practical terms, but as an aesthetic object, I love it. Sometimes I just look at it.

this being nominated only for best writing at the ennies almost feels like a snub; wish I could afford the physical version, Chris really nailed those 2-page layouts

The aesthetics of this book are gorgeous and on point, but there also seems to be a ton of wasted unused space on the pages

It was probably in response to the people that found Into The Odd too hard to read due to font style and size choices.

I think a nice source of inspiration for Electric Bastionland adventures and its look & feel might be the video game Forgotton (sic) Anne, where we deal with a land of animated items, fueled by memories.

i like the damaqge per round instead of hit and miss in combat. I've adapted my 5e games so armor is a "hit saving throw" instead of a static number and depending on the threat, ,a good armor roll is only half damage, a bad roll is full damage + possible other effects etc. Optimizing defenses becomes just reducing damage vs avoiding it.

@@scottosau the team currently ranges from ac 15 to 22 = +5 to +12 to their roll. Paladin has the most HP @ level 8 with 90hp the least is the rogue with 45. Today the team dived into a phase spider nest in the etheral and ended up running fortheir lives through these webbing walkways from cluster to cluster looking for kidnapped people and a way to get them out. I hit them with packs of spiders so they're always squaring off against 4 - 8 spiders that on a roll above 24 is no damage, 15 - 23 = about d10+20 ish damage per round (25%ish of paladin), below 15 is 40 damage, (yes, it can nearly 1-shot the rogue to roll bad... IF the player is bad about positioning and gets flanked) and a nat 1 can one-shot them or do 60 damage (same thing for most of them). the rogue can roll with the attack to 1/2 the damage 1/round, they all get a minimum of 1 IP per session to reroll any nat ones, and they've got 4 healers in the party.. anytime the team is outnumbered or facing a Deadly level boss fight, 1 to 5 of them is getting chunked, it's just a matter of how much, unless they nat 20. the target numbers and damage always scales off the toughtest in the team tempered by the team average, so this scales through 20th with the same rough progression, I use 4e minion rules and had 16 phase spiders swarming after them taking chunks anytime they didn't move on the map each round. they had to figure out how to grab up people and keep moving to get everyone out. (eesh. long post sry)

@@sirioguidoandreapreziosi3836 ya. we're in our 4th year now, just hit 16th level. It's evolved a bit over time. we're still using the defense roll to take half damage, and if they roll nat 20 zero hp loss. but now i'll occasionally have them all roll defense and i'll deal damage to the 1, 2, or 3 lowest rolls in the team and the rest take half, which is basically using a defense roll as an area saving throw where worst roll fails without even having a target number in mind, such as when they're mobbed by 20 mephits, or they're under ranged attack. the low roll gets caught out, like the shooters are taking advantage of whatever they can get a bead on. single target attacks are mixed in as well, especially bosses that will single out a problem character. At 16th they're ranging from 75 to 115 hp using 5e, so I can harrass them with 5 to 10 or 10 to 20 damage per round depending on the fight, and then boss monsters can hit for 15 to 30 or 20 to 40 damage, so after 3 or 4 rounds they're typically under 1/2 hp and making hard choices about retreating or focusing fire and healing up. the rogue uses uncanny dodge all the time and because he might only need to make 1 or 2 defense rolls per round it's pretty good tanking because his rolls are good and then he can half again, so a 20 point hit is defense rolled to 10 then uncanny dodged down to 5... or a boss smacking for 40 gets whittled down to 20 or 10, he has to pay attention. the ranger has 115 so can take some hits but is a horizon walker, so has a lot of mobility, and still uses restraining shots to immobilize targets to create breathing room. druid douses the team with heals to keep em going. I also have a separate team taht I playtest content with using normal 5e initiative and damage rules... normal is SO sluggish and just doesn't have the same urgency or narrative flexibility that the group initiative, passive damage team has. four 8th level character vs 16 skirmishers took 90 minutes. I could have gotten through that fight in 20 minutes using the defense rolls stuff. 5e is so granular, and every initiative count can be deliberated over. both systems allow for the same amount of character agency, but the variant rules we're using at 16th just get stuff done.

Because it's an entirely different flavour from anything traditionally OSR? Also, often it's not about the "meat" of a book, it's about how it presents itself and how It can influence your own Gaming experience. Most players fall into two categories anyway: those who play 100% by the rules of their DnD of choice and those that like mix and match and mash OSR content to create the experience they want. And anyway, ITO doesn't even follow the basic DnD system to begin with. It's its own game with its own rules and Logic lol
