Electric Alfa Romeo Spider test drive

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Time to take this beautiful all electric Alfa Romeo Spider out for a test drive around the hills of Wales. As well as converting it to electric we've also brought the bodywork and interior up to scratch with a respray and full retrim with gorgeous leather and suede. It's got a Hyper 9 motor in, driving the rear prop via an inline gear reduction unit, so no gearbox. Tesla battery pack is 35 kWh, which should give a range of around 120 miles driving normally on A roads.

As an Alfa Romeo historian and lifelong lover of these cars, I don't know what to think about this one. I'm usually very positive about EV conversions in general and yours in particular, as they're so well designed and executed. Converting such a late-model Spider makes perhaps more sense than earlier ones, as those late 2.0 twin-cams were more about the torque than horsepower, and the car itself had become more of a cruiser than a raw sports car. Would I ditch the Alfa engine and slick gearbox for EV power, if I owned one of these? Mmmh... No, I don't think so. But I can see the appeal for someone else. Well shot and very pleasant video, thank you for sharing it with us!

Matteo I’m with you . I’m just not ready to let go of the smell of petrol and the induction noise just yet , not to mention the physical interactions of driving input . Having said that though the work on this Spider is certainly excellent and I’m sure one day I’ll take the plunge with an EV of some sort

Had a 2L Red Spyder for 3 years. What a car, flip 2 catches flip the roof back, suns out even in winter. That DOHC engine was a peach and so was the gearbox but it was the pin sharp handling with limited slip diff that was so addictive. The wall of screens and touch-stuff on a Tesla or the new BMW i4 is sometimes intimidating when not directly hampering of a relaxed use of the car. I love that you don't shove that into these cars but respect their original nature and blend so well the necessary new functions into the old gauges and knobs. 👍

Only downside seems to be the cost of conversion against cost of fuel/maintenence. If it costs around £50k (low estimate) to convert a car like this to electric that's around ~8,000 gallons of fuel at todays prices. At 20mpg you'd cover 160,000 miles. If you spent half the $50k on fuel (£25k - 80,000 miles worth of fuel) you wouldn't spend the other £25k on maintenence over say 10 years, besides Tesla batteries seem to need replacing after around 8-10 years/150k miles. I own 4 classic cars, 2 Minis a Triumph GT6 and a TVR and been considering a conversion for a while and for now it seems to be significantly more expensive than maintaining an engine that doesnt take hours to charge and gearbox that can be rebuilt or swapped out. In most cases it would be far cheaper to swap out a classic engine for a more powerful, cleaner, fuel efficient engine. All that aside these projects are great engineering exercises and great to watch.

I would like to see a classic Triumph TR-6. I have had a TR-3A, TR4, TR-250 here in the U.S> and Three TR-6 cars that I rebuilt and enjoyed back in the day. Only wish I had kept one of them. Life happens as we are busy making plans. Love your Chanel , thanks for the great content.

I'd like to see either an MGF or TF converted. There must a few sitting there with blown head gaskets. If I had the money, I'd seriously consider doing this. That or my 1990 Audi coupe quattro.

I'd love to see you do an aluminium bodied and space framed Audi A2. It's already a lightweight vehicle, it's got a sandwich floor and a massive boot so getting even better weight distribution should be possible. I know there are plenty of enthusiastic members of the A2OC who would love to see a kit to allow these great, practical and fun vehicles to keep on wheeling into the 2030s.

We have a Hyper9 motor in one of our cars. The sound was one of the first things my kids noticed, they really liked the sound of it. Different electric motors have different sounds it is just not screaming loud like in a gas car. The odd thing about classic cars conversions, is they don't really have the soundproofing of modern cars so you hear the motor more inside the car than anyone can on the outside.

I have owned an Alfa Romeo S3 for the past 13 years and am in awe of your conversion. Just a thought 🤔 plugging your lead into the free Charging units, leaves a huge opportunity for a thief or indeed a vandal to help himself to your unit. Are the charging units that you use your credit/debit card at, are they more secure Much appreciation for your vlogs, well done 👏

I work with a guy that had an Alfa romeo, and it was always giving him trouble and Being here in Australia it was difficult to get parts for them, so If that is a particular problem for you, turning a problem into an Easy driver would be a "No Brainer". Nice looking car, very nice restoration.

Beautiful car and very tidy under the bonnet lay out. Perfect ... for town cruising and lets face it posing 😎😂. How long the free chargings going to last i dont know...🤔 The electrical power infra structure is going to need a major uprating... for a start. Have you seen what the French are doing with small commuter car conversions...? Im wondering if one of those Warp motors would be up to replacing the diesel motor in a boat especially a sail boat the issue with boat engines is they work under constant extended load...typically 75%or greater.

Hi Richard, I really like what you guys did to the Alfa Romeo! I'm a retired mechanical engineer in California. I own a 2021 Tesla Model 3 Performance. The one thing, well actually two things, I love about the car are the silence and power. I hear birds chirping when I am blasting through the country! Anyway, do you guys know about Kei trucks? They have been made in Japan for years and also they drive on the same side as you guys. Perhaps doing a conversion on one of them would be a kick! Many thanks for your great channel! Cheers!

Keep the good work guys 😉👍
