Can't remember where it was but before release Myazaki did an interview and was asked about the sea monsters on the map. His reply was that he couldn't talk about them at that time. If they had nothing to do with content for the game I think he would simply have said so. Based on that I think sea monsters will have a significant role in the DLC.

Especially considering how merman-like Godwyn's soulless husk looks. Deathroot cultivates well within crabs in particular, which means that Godwyn's influence could spread across the sea, potentially into foreign lands. I smell sequel bait.

It might also be because game crosses come close, but never connect. There are key items, characters, or points of time. That just miss in just one aspect, but all others do work. You know just like real life culture and religion in social memory compared to historical occurrence.

Miyazaki has wanted to do a sea monster battle since at least DS1, what became the Hydra, though I remember reading that he was disastisfied and wanted something bigger. Maybe we'll see that desire realized in the DLC.

The moon and water are closely connected in some way. The Carians built circular pools specifically to reflect the moon. I've always thought maybe the reflection acted as a portal for them to go there. There's also the inverted tower which has a similar theme of traversing the reflection. The sky and the cosmos are one.

If we consider the huge influence alchemy has on this game you can consider the connection of Sun/Faith/Fire/Sulfur and Moon/Intelligence/Water/Mercury and how they are opposites to each other. in this way you can see how water is also tied to the moon. Water is also tied to Scarlet Rot. In Shinto beliefs, flowing water is said to get rid of impurities whereas stagnant water breeds disease and curses. Scarlet Rot and Poison only exist in places where water doesn't flow and the Blue Dancer Charm talisman talks about how the blind swordsman that taught Malenia was taught by a blue river fairy to fight with a flowing sword to purify the stagnation.

I sure got so excited seeing all the wrecked ships, and was absolutely certain something would come up out of the sea in the area on Weeping Peninsula where all the corpses are just meandering on the beach. Another point towards water/ocean=world of the dead is that in Celtic lore, Manannan mac Lir is someone akin to the lord of the dead, and he lives in the ocean, which to him appears like a field full of magical horses that can traverse both land and water. Definitely has me thinking of the field of wheat, and all the horseshoes on posts in the image we have for the dlc.. 👀

No one gonna mention that at 2:30 the creature with the 'goofy face' is basically Godwin? It's the same upside down visage on a long fish body found both below Stormvale Castle and in the area where you find Fia at the end of her questline. I can definitely see water playing an important part in the DLC. The Lands Between are beset with kegare - the defilement and pollution of death (among other pollutants created during the shattering). Godwyn’s body is itself kegare as a result of his murder and spreads through the lands. Still water is a marker and breeding ground for kegare as well - most all those tainted places have still waters except for places we transition from one place to another *in a coffin* on a waterfall. To clear kegare the one responsible for it must be the one to purify it through rituals involving clean moving water like rivers and waterfalls. Though the Tarnished was not directly involved, as Elden Lord they could represent the avatar of responsibility and thus be tasked with clearing the corruption of kegare throughout the Lands. Food for thought! (Or Water, that is).

The water in the Elden Beast and Rennala fight more so I think has to do with their back story. Rennala is the Queen of the Moon, The Elden Beast seemingly comes from space. The water maybe there because the Moon can manipulate the currents in the Oceans. I also wonder if there will be different paths you can go down based on which ending you selected. Maybe more watery content for finishing Rani’s quest line.

As someone with pretty severe thalassophobia I really hope there aren't deep sea monsters in the DLC, unless you can fight them above ground or in shallow water. Sekiro was terrifying enough having to swim by the giant fish, but if Elden Ring DLC features any underwater sections or ocean traversal I may not be able to bring myself to play it. P.S. Thanks for introducing me to my new nightmare, Omibozu; that's creepy as hell and I'd shit my pants if I saw that in a game. 😅

I’m right there with you man. I had to put a video on my other screen during that part of Sekiro and even then I was terrified beyond rational thought. I want like hell not to have to deal with the ocean in ER.

Same here, deep/unclear underwater is my nightmare. As a kid I was scared of every "big water" moment. For example in Crash Bandicoot 3 there was an underwater map and "middle of the ocean" map. NOPE

@@czupryndaniel Yeah water has always freaked me out too. My big "nope" moment was playing Star Wars Shadows of the Empire on N64. There's a sewer level and the water is murky and nasty and if you fall in there are monsters that try to kill you. I managed the whole level without falling in but when you walk into the final boss area it's a closed chamber that starts filling with water. You HAVE to go underwater to fight the giant monster. The very first time I saw the room filling with water I paused the game and quit the level.

@@The_Gaba_Ghoul Ah man, sorry to hear that. The only way I was able to do it was to look a video up online of someone playing that section just to see what would happen first. It was still terrifying when I did it but at least I knew what was coming, so at least the element of surprise was gone

@@superpunkgohan yeah everything surrounding the great carp was pure terror, even the feeding times and especially when it smashes that bridge. I did everything I could to kill that thing the as soon as possible, and even tried for a long time to find a cheese jump to the feeding area without swimming through. I’ve played through Sekiro enough now where generally I know now how to pass through that area with minimal exposure, but there’s still major anxiety about it when swimming out to that rooftop with the old lady on it to get the carp in position. God, fuck fountainhead.

  • @LovelessDogg1

This is gonna sound strange so bear with me. It's all just speculation based off some old cut content I don't really see many people talk about. (probably because it's not very well known) Umibozu could also be a remnant of DS3 since development took place congruently, as such there are a ton of ideas that bled over from one to the other. For example, I've seen a few early beta maps of DS3 and in areas where giant enemy crabs should be, there's a completely different enemy altogether. These maps are left over from a state of development when the crabs didn't exist in DS3. So I have a good reason to believe that the crabs are actually an Elden Ring asset and didn't actually originate from DS3 because they are the only enemy in the game that not only makes zero sense in the world but still has the same stagger mechanic that their ER counterpart does. Now, how does this relate to Umibozu? Well, in DS3 the older version of the Aldrich boss fight was very similar to the Phalanx fight in Demon's Souls. He would crawl from out of his coffin halfway through the fight with the Decons of the Deep and just sludge around like a blob while the congregation takes the offense. When the game's story changed entirely they needed a new boss to be in Anor Londo, they shuffled a few things around and Frankensteined a new Aldrich boss using already existing assets. (The top half of Lothric wearing a funny hat and some slime enemies all mashed together) In the lore, this Aldrich makes mention of having "dreams of a deep sea" so if we take this bit of info and add the old version of the boss you get something that's supposed to be an Umibozu type monster. That old ER map could have been from a period of development where it was a reference to that version of him. If future DLC does involve the sea, I think whatever version of Aldrich that used to be in DS3 will show up again in ER. From isn't above reusing unfinished ideas in DLC or future games. I mean, literally every game is filled with reused assets. Even ER's compass is in an old build of Bloodborne and it would be used while exploring the Chalice Dungeons, which not surprisingly used to be part of the main overworld like they are in ER. I don’t know, maybe that all sounds way too stupid. Lol

Even though i couldnt imagine breaking the lore down in the depth that you do, on my first play through i too found this water theme. When i reached elden beast i thought wow this is the big reveal, like bloodborne's twist. I was disappointed of course and didnt really think much more of it. I would love for the dlc to revolve around this and the story/dream of miquella.

Considering the world of the living as we know it is called "The Lands Between", the world of Death might be called "The Seas Below" or some such. That would also make the cosmos the realm of the gods, "The Stars Above" if you will, which DEFINITELY checks out, considering most of the Outer Gods are themed on celestial objects. Blessings rain from the sky, while Death and curses pool beneath the world.

Not to mention Malenia and the Blind Swordsman thing, with "brisk waters as fluid and flowing" opposite to the putrefaction of Malenia. The Haligtree is watered with Miquella's blood yet waters runs clear at it's foot with even flowers/lilies sprouting. We get water things in Elden Ring but that's still too little in my humble opinion. Fingers crossed we get something deeper in the dlc.

West of the church of Ella, along the beach not far from the sleeping Kaiden enemy is a mysterious purple cloud mass that rest at the edge where the shore line and drop off meet. It's isolated in a particular area and doesn't spread away from that spot. I suggest going at night despite it being visible during the day just to get a better view of it. I have always found it strange that this foggy mass just sat there but with all you have brought to light perhaps this may have a connection.

about the Rennala Arena: the boss we are fighting is something like a spirit/ghost (from what I gathered with Ranni's interference in the fight), also she is the "Queen of the full Moon". Us seeing a full moon in the Arena could be a hint on the gravitational pull on water, bringing the high tide and the border between the worlds closer so she can summon her Spirits to protect and fight for her.
