Elden Ring: PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S Tech Review - The Best Ways to Play on Next-Gen Consoles

Ойындар

Everything you need to know about getting the best performance out of Elden Ring. Updated to patch 1.02 we'd hoped to see a boost to frame-rates over the network test - though in reality it remains a sub-60fps experience on PS5, Series X and S, regardless of mode. That said, Tom and John explain the best workarounds for each console, for achieving a smoother experience.

Perhaps they could get help from Bluepoint, Insomniac, or some other studio that’s competent at that aspect of game development. There’s no reason why this game shouldn’t be running at a locked 60 fps on the PS5 & XSX.

To be fair, the Bluepoint folks have the luxury of being paid handsomely for spending years on what's basically art restoration. They don't have to spend one minute on coming up with concepts or systems or stories or anything really. From on the other hand has created four excellent and entirely new games with plenty of old school add-ons to boot plus a remaster of a last gen title game for one single console generation. I'll gladly accept some shortcomings if it means not having to wait half a decade for every bloody AAA game release.

  • @Kieranh778

Regarding the motion blur: FS usually store these values in their shader config spreadsheets, which are filed by locale. Same as for tonemap, color balance, etc.. for each 'area'. It's likely tuned based on location, from their tests. Doubt it's dynamic. All of their previous games have done it this way. You can also adjust the frame rate of the motion blur here (for example). Which is usually locked to 30, regardless of frame cap. You could maybe test by going up high and looking towards the sky, then swing big weapons. In another note: I really can't discern what exactly is so performance intensive about this release. There is nothing particularly extensive about the graphical features or fidelity. Seems like it might simply be FS's inexperience with open world streaming. Finally, excluding the performance issues & gameplay; pretty disappointed with the flat lighting/shadow and shader downgrade vs the network test. The lod pop-in is very aggressive and the distant tree/foliage look akin to BOTW's..

  • @BlueZirnitra

I think inexperience is the key word here. FS have always been an artistic and gameplay powerhouse but they never were the strongest in terms of tech. I think this release has revealed those rough edges more than ever. It might even be to do with Japanese game development culture. Western developers have been pushing game engine optimization since the early PC games, almost to a fault at times. I can only imagine what a souls game would be like if they had people from Id helping them out from the outset.

Its so weird to me when people don’t care about fps. Like I do notice a difference from 60-120, but 60 is acceptable but absolutely required. I will not play under 60, it’s unplayable. And an unstable frame rate is also unplayable. Its hust weird that like 20% of gamers are like you, and 80% are like me. Im trult surprised 100% aren’t like me with the FPS. I would take better graphics settings/resolution/ray tracing though for any game other than a first person shooter over 120 fps, but I do need that 60 period before we put any other bells and whistles. 60 is the number one priority

What irritates me the most is look at Demons Souls Remake. That game from what I can tell, runs at 1440p 60fps and it’s genuinely at times, the best looking game I’ve seen. Idk why developers feel so inclined to do 4K. Like just do a 4K max settings mode and do a 1440p with high settings 60fps mode. It’s genuinely not that hard. It’s actually probably easier than trying to implement dynamic resolutions. Edit* I should have compared ER to Ghost of Tsushima. Clearly a beautiful open world game can run well if it is actually optimized and the developers aren’t afraid to tweak some settings and target below 4K (1800p is their target I believe for performance).

Buy PsN card online you can save over 10%( example 100€ will you cost 85 to 90), do not buy a game key for this game for upcoming dlc's. I experienced with other games that after 4 to 6 months they account where you download the game will not work after this period and you cannot start the game anymore.

From software needs to be heavily roasted for this performance on such powerful hardware, the game does not do nearly enough technically to warrant the performance issues, and if asking for outside help is the solution to the issues they have with every release they really should ask for outside help. The issues on PC are pretty poor but to even have same on consoles with fixed hardware where they traditionally release games is surprising. The game is good (not even close to the ratings imo but it's open world dark souls 3 which is fine enough) but the performance issues they really deserve to be fully roasted for, a video like this is appreciated. I heard the PC problems are due to anti cheat software to which it’s not the first game to have that happen to. The frame rate seems to be the only problem in the game which can be fixed in an upcoming update. Most people probably wouldn’t even be anywhere near finishing the game when that happens hopefully.

I like that the DS3 crabs aren't pushovers, but I don't like that they're only weak to blunt damage when it seems like their faces are a soft part of their body and should be vulnerable to all types of physical damage. 7:44 I don't understand this part. Persistence should be the same at both 60 and 120Hz if the content plays at 60 fps (so ~16.7 ms of persistence), right? It's just that the 120Hz display shows a frame 2 times for ~8.35 ms each instead of one time for ~16.7 ms.

exactly, He seems to have some fundamental misunderstandings. Really needs to do some research at blurbusters before talking about persistence effects. to be clear with sample and hold VRR mprt(persistence blur) = frametime in ms. even if LFC(low framerate compensation) is doubling frames it doesn't matter on sample and hold as you said the doubled frame is still being shown on the screen for the same amount of time. You should always keep your set VRR refreshrate at the maximum the tv will accept ie 120hz usually, this will actually decrease input lag by a lot for 60fps games because you are not going to ever pay the double buffer vsync penalty when fps goes over or get's close to max refreshrate. you also gain the benefits of QFT(quick frame transport) which is another input lag reducer. (transports and scans out any vrr frame at max hz scanrate).

I think part of the reason the demon souls remake felt so good is because the frame pacing was rock solid, movement felt smooth and responsive. It has a crispness to it. So 9 months on, where are we with this after patching on the next gen consoles? Well, I'll tell you (as no one else seems to be). We are in exactly the same place in terms of performance. Tonight I visually compared PS5 to Series X with Elden Ring 1.08.1 on a LG C2 OLED TV. PS5 is still suffering from stutters and judder, it's not constant, but it is there, this occurs with VRR on and off. Series X is still noticeable worse with framerates with VRR off compared to PS5, dips well below 60FPS. However, turn VRR on with Series X and the appearance is buttery smooth. It's quite incredible really how well it masks the framerate issues. Loading times are now the same, this was the one thing that previously made me choose PS5 before I had a VRR display. So yep, 9 months on; if you have a Series X and a VRR display, this is the way.

Although I do love this game but what I don’t understand is no reviews mentioned the performance issues and clearly from the scores, performance wasn’t reflected. In what you might call a normal western RPG, strong frame-rates don’t have material impact to the experience but being a Souls game, gameplay is a core mechanic. So stayed up to midnight on Thursday 27th, after trying to start the game about 10 times until the, too early message disappeared, went to Quality mode on my Series X (because I’m a graphics junky and the reason I upgraded my Box), excitement building, through character creation, finally got to control my character and it was practically unplayable, i soldiered on to a point I almost gave up, thought I’d break tradition and changed to frame rate mode and it became playable. I was so confused, genuinely thought it was my Xbox until I started to see you tubers talk about performance. Just don’t know why there was radio silence. As I’ve said love the game but might have waited until performance was patched before buying as it’s not like we don’t have variety at the moment. Anyway glad DF highlighted that fact and not criticising and know the reasons for the delay, just wish this video was available 6 days ago.
