I absolutely love how Malenia doesn’t even have an ounce of armor or protective clothing, she’s just straight up naked and she still tanks every goddamn hit and strikes back without even flinching. That’s leagues more threatening than any crazy looking armor you could possibly give to a boss.

@@SwiftyEmpire Actually, there is nothing that indicates that Malenia becomes a different person when she blooms as the Goddess of Scarlet Rot. In fact, based on in-game evidence, it’s extremely unlikely. Firstly, whenever we see a case of someone’s body being taken over by another being, we see their name change. This occurs with Shabriri and Hyetta; they possess the corpses of Yura and Irina respectively, and both times, the actual name of the NPC changes. It’s also noticeable in their voices that a new individual has taken over the body; the talented voice actors take on a new cadence and tone to reflect that while the physical vessel remains the same, the individual inhabiting it has been replaced by another. Their body language even changes. Meanwhile, Malenia shows none of these characteristics. It specifically states on her boss healthbar, “Malenia, Goddess of Rot”. Her voice lines for the second phase transition show no change of tone or cadence. In addition, when you finally beat her, she congratulates you on your victory, saying you have the mark of a true lord before lamenting her brother Miquella’s misfortune and apologizing to him for failing to protect his Haligtree. If she was possessed by the Outer God of Rot, then she wouldn’t say this. Finally, Malenia has just about the same moveset from her first phase, only now her attacks are imbued with Scarlet Rot and she also has some new attacks and extended attack combos utilizing her wings. The fact that she is simply expanding her moveset based on her new physiology and doesn’t just have an entirely new moveset indicates that she is still Malenia. However, you aren’t entirely wrong. It is still Malenia, but it is a very different Malenia. Her motivation for defeating you is the same, but when we battle her as the Rot Goddess, we are battling her as a woman who has finally succumbed to the Outer God who chose her to be it’s empyrean representative. Just as Marika was the Goddess of Gold chosen by the Greater Will, Malenia was the Goddess of Rot chosen by the Outer God of Rot. We’re essentially fighting the equivalent of Queen Marika, only the Rot instead of the Greater Will. She is still Malenia, but she has given up her will to the Rot to keep fighting for her brother, which is still just as tragic if not more so, as if she were to defeat us, she would probably rise as the God Queen of a new “Rotten Order”, the rot infested Haligtree acting as the new Erdtree. So in conclusion, Malenia has not been possessed or replaced by the Goddess of Rot, she is still Malenia, she is just a vassal of the Outer God of Rot, a new God Queen like Marika, and just like Marika, her will is now subject to the Outer Force that inhabits her body.

I actually found the second phase easier. Sure kept getting killed by the initial scarlet aeonia but the aggression made her easier to hit and made me less panicky than the first phase, waiting for her to make a move, only to get caught off guard

Malenia is the dictionary definition of the secret boss that's twice as a hard as the final boss. You don't fight her for any reason except maybe xp. Her loot is not great especially when compared to the loot you'll probably have by this point. She's just a tough fight for the sake of glory. It's the dev's way of saying "prove yourself" and I love it. The fight was cancer though.

5 hours? It took me like 2 attempts and 10 minutes. Just called 2 buddies and we bodied her no sweat lol.

One of the best characters in the game, in my opinion. She is a lot better than people give her credit for. Her boss fight is my favourite in the game (not perfect, but still my favourite) and even lorewise she is a great character. People insult her for what she did to Radahn and for essentially nuking Caelid, but all know what a beast Radahn was and she really had to use all of her resources; plus, considering she was fighting for a better future along with her brother (which we *know* would've been a better future, Miquella was creating a home for everyone, even Albinaurics and Misbegotten), it makes sense why she was ready to give in to the Rot itself.

Exactly, people don't understand that wasn't on Malenia's plans to absolutely destroy Caelid, but it was the first time the Scarlet Aeonia bloomed, so the power liberated was probably way more than she was expecting, since even her got damaged by it. Even if she was able to keep again Radahn and his insane Gravitational Magic with her skills as a master swordswoman alone, they were locked on a stalemate, as pointed out in the trailer and stone sword memorials. Malenia removed the needle containing the Scarlet Rot and allowed it to roam free. You can even argue that she learned how to control the power on the second time the Scarlet Aeonia blooms I really hope she gets more stuff with this dlc

She is so elegant in everything she does. The way she waits for you in the first phase instead of throwing herself at you, her attacks and, in phase two, when she strikes with those flowery shadows, as if she was dancing. A true goddess

Malenia Is like the orphan of cos. Incredibly annoying and difficult, but in a sense, fun. She was the first boss I genuinely struggled with, and I loved it because of it. Yeah some other bosses were difficult, but nothing tops over Malenia, Blade of Miquella... I've witnesses true horror, but yet. I'm more grateful that I have. "Your Strength... Extraordinary... The Mark... Of a True Lord..."

I love it when Malenia said: "It's rottin' time" and started rotting all over the place. Truely one of the Elden Bling moments

Yep, took me I think 3 days of something like 80+ tries. I think I spent over 8 hours of my life fighting this one boss lol. So satisfying when I was finally able to beat her.

I think Malenia deserves a lot more respect than people give her. Here's some points for you to consider when you think about her: Unlike Marika, Malenia (and Miquella) didn't have a choice to be vessels for curses (Miquella is forever cursed to be a child). Marika was chosen by the Greater Will sure, but Marika *also* chose to be the vessel for the Elden Ring. The Greater Will didn't *force* her to be the vessel (sure, later on she wanted to be free from it, but that's a different story). Malenia was born with a curse, as a vessel she herself couldn't control for the most part. She lost her sword arm, her eyes, her legs...yet she didn't give up and let herself die. Much like Morgott, she never uses the power of her blood, rather, she relies on her own prowess and skill to beat her enemies. Which, if you tie in the fact she's literally blind, completely moots the debate whether she lost to Radahn or not. Whether she lost to Radahn or not in your eyes, just the *fact* that she was able to challenge Radahn while blind *and* being disabled is worthy enough of respect. Once again, we're never told the full story of *why* Malenia fought Radahn. But one thing we know for sure, it *definitely* wasn't for power (else, she'd have seiged Leyndell with the other demigods). One theory to consider is that, Radahn is the Starscourge. Much like Ranni, Miquella (herself too, but she gave up her Empyrean title to protect and help her brother) is an Empyrean. So, I don't think it is far-fetched to say that Miquella's fate was also held in stasis by Radahn, and much like us with Ranni, Malenia challenged Radahn to free Miquella from the shackles of the Golden Order. Malenia isn't an evil person, she had no other choice but to use the power of her blood to hold Radahn in a deadlock (think: Morgott too did this, when he was backed into a corner by us), for the sake of her brother. And, keep in mind, she was also badly hurt from the battle; Radahn wasn't the only one who "lost" the fight. At the end of it, she was in a near-death state, and Finlay had to protect her and bring her back to Elphael (which is a long ass way, hats off to Finlay btw). Except the Cleanrot Knights and the Redmanes (and the Leyndell knights), no other knightly regime has such immense respect for their leader. And when you see Morgott and Radahn, they're both such amazingly great characters, so it's not far to argue that Malenia is too. When you fight her, she's so far gone by the time, that she has to constantly remind herself who she fights for (yep, she's not taunting you when she says "I am Malenia, Blade Of Miquella"). The rot eats away at her mind, and she has to keep telling herself that she is the "Blade Of Miquella" to keep sane. However, once again, as you back her into a corner, she resorts to using the power of her blood to defeat you. If you consider an alternate scenario, where you never come back after dying, in such a case, you aren't the only one losing; she's losing her fight to the Rot too. She's literally making a final stand to fight you, and even if she kills you using her blood's powers, she will die too, completely succumbed to the Rot. It is only rather a mercy on her, that you kill her. If not anything else, she deserves the same respect as Morgott at the very least. They're both not much different when you think about it. So the next time you die to her, remember: she is Malenia, the Severed, possibly the most tragic but at the same time fierce warrior, and there is no shame in dying to a legend.

Lack of a sword-arm and leg while being as strong as Malenia is quite impressive by our standards. But consider; this is From logic. Millicent is able to use one relatively easily and the arm also serves to remove a weak point, Malenia would be dead if she didn't have the prosthetic as it got cut off by Radahn. Wolf from Sekiro also has a prosthetic that is treated more as an advantage than a disability. And as tragic as her tale is, she still permanentely ruined Caelid, resulting in the death and suffering of many, simply to stop 1 person who was stronger. Even though the two were (as we're told) evenly matched, Radahn wouldn't need to kill an entire region to take down Malenia, and likely wouldn't have even if he had the ability, due to his loyalty to his allies.

Everyone talks about Waterflow, but i just love that for her Quick 3 Sclicer she chokes up on her Blade to have more Control over the Momentum of her Sword, signifying her Instictuel Knowledge of Combat by Showcasing her Manipulaition of Leverage.

first time hearing past around the 30 second mark, it's beautiful.

I played the game with no spoilers and it took me like 76 times before I beat her first phase and I didn’t know she had a second phase and when she said “ you will witness true horror” and got rot bombed after it I had to process that whole thing for like 5 hours before I tried again 😭

Niiiiice! Was difficult to hear this awesomeness over getting killed and rotting like 1000 times! like ^^

All she did was trying to protect her brother, Miquella. Miquella's vision and his ascension to become the god the lands between truly needed. I saw Miquella's quest as the most noble one, I believe there should never have been a discrimination from what is now with the Numen and the old the beings already there from before the Erd tree. She and Miquella were born from one single being, Marika/Radagon and that meant the outergods meddled and cursed the kids in horrible ways to show they were watching all along. Another such abandoned child Mogh was touched by an outer god in the lonely desperation to be loved by a parent and being cursed to be Fell Omen, something that has been there long before Marika. I upon learning Malenia's story only could cry ending her..This was her very sworn duty, and if only you could tell her that Miquella's been captured by Mogh and where he is none of this would need to happen. I still believe in a Halig tree happy ending for all the beings in the lands between! This was one glorious boss to fight and so sad as she only did it to protect something greater than she.

I like the theory that she was fighting Radahn because he was holding the stars in place and thus preventing the eclipse that Miquella thought to be capable of bringing back Godwyn. It frames her terrible act in Caelid as her giving up her pride and dignity as a person to save the pride and dignity of someone else she believed to be more deserving of it. Her battle with Radahn one of clashing but similar ideas of selflessness. One willing to sacrifice everything for her beliefs, and the other willing to sacrifice everything for his people. Both sacrificed everything for the ones they cared for that day, but no one was saved. Both left grotesque parodies of their former selves: a cannibalistic mindless beast condemned to waste away on the battlefield he made his name on waiting to be killed by his former comrades, and a rotting half living monster condemned to repeat the same oath of loyalty to a now lost sibling endlessly tormented by dreams of the untold suffering she's caused. The stars shall fall, Miquella shall never be returned, Caelid and Godwyn are both cursed with undeath, and everything is worse now. And it is all because of the two demigods with the best intentions in their hearts, and a selfish mother broken by the death of her favored son.

@@tanthokg I mean she imprisoned her most loyal companion for potentially eternity because she wanted her reign to be eternal, when said imprisonment is also one of the big reasons everything is so terrible in the lands between, and founded a religion stating she was the one true god, all while not really caring for any of her children beside (maybe) Godwyn. Maybe the shattering wasn't a selfish act, but her actions before most certainly were.

I'm not trying to side with Marika actually, but IMO most kings in our history also want to have their reign last for eternity, so it is not something too out of this world. It can be inferred that, at first Marika was a pawn of the Greater Will, waging war here and there, trying to solidify the foundation of the Golden Order, deeming her children as Omen. But (very later on) upon, suddenly she realized how bad the Golden Order was, she shattered the Elden Ring

Marika is probably the most mysterious character in elden ring her intentions and motivations are unclear,there are even theories and hints that she might be behind the night of the black knifes,her actions are so weird and ambiguous that i can’t say if she is the most vile person in the lands between,the real unsung hero or these two things at the same time one thing im almost sure of is that what drove her to do everything she did was really unbearable

​@@tanthokg Rogier directly says that the night of black knives was the indirect cause of the shattering. You can see it in real life too, people's faith can be shaken when a loved one dies in an especially tragic way.

Haven't defeated her because I want my victory to be perfect but damn this OST makes me want to cry. Oh Malenia who sought only to protect her twin brother Miquella. She who was infected by the Scarlet Rot and was driven to descend Caelid into rot and discord during her battle with Radahn...I witnessed true horror because of her but it's nothing compared to the horror she faced!

It took 15 playthroughs, several hundred attempts, hours upon hours of frustration, anger, and outright boredom across killing her every playthrough, but I may have, finally, actually enjoyed my most recent fight with her. Waterfowl Dance, Blade of Miquella.

Like when this ost starts playing and u didn’t spoil the fight this ost will give u chills and just inject fear into u when u realize u have to beat her again

Ngl my favorite fight for those who are a Dex and use bloodhound step this is the closest you get as a mirror match and boi does she make it a crazy fight I usually have rivers of blood as my weapon but for her fight I decided to fight back to the roots and put away the Rivers of blood for the Uchigatana and fought her with Uchigatana with the bloodhound step to make it a high speed duel between dex weapons Speed vs speed Dex vs Dex No poise vs no poise Arcane vs Faith Uchigatana vs Scarlet rot Definitely was the battle where it could go any way really felt like player vs player of Dex & Arcane vs Dex & faith a battle to decide which combination was the superior to the other, even tho she was a 70+ attempt boss fight I enjoyed every encounter, truly felt like the rival battle in the game which is why no matter which file I’m playing in I make it a rule to face her in combat no matter what build I’m using for that encounter now for sure my favorite match up is between Moonvile +Dex&arcane build or Maliketh blade+strength & Faith but definitely try it out in new game+ if you got Maliketh’s blade and build a STR + faith build it’s a really fun battle that way

@@junkoe3808 nope was still a rough fight and I play it as if it’s vergils trick dodge so I only use it to get closer for combos and avoid certain attacks like range attacks and leave rolling to up close

One of my favorite bosses in the franchise. It's just so cool and is fun to back it up. Elden ring has the hardest boss roster of the series for me. Currently slamming my head against Radagon since he's the only one left. If I were to give a ranking of bosses in franchise its probably be 1. Gael 2. Malenia 3. Ludwig Nothing felt better than on the third day when I managed a win second try after suffering so much through the previous days.

I love listening to these whilst working, tysm ❤

This song in combination with the appearance of Malenia herself gave the sense of fighting against divinity more than anything else in the Dark Souls series

I will give Malenia this. She allowed Elden Ring to have an 'Universally challenging' boss. Much like what the Nameless King was to Dark Souls 3. Nameless King was still harder than Malenia for me, but still Malenia was great.

@@Javier-il1xi I mean thats nothing to be ashamed of, every Superboss can spiral into a wall. It does not matter how many tries it takes its about how much progress you make with each one. I stopped trying for the day after 2 attempts. This meant that it took me around a week to finish her, but I learned a tremendous amount with each attempt. If I compare this to the first time I faced such a boss I did way worse. I did'nt limit any of my attempts per day, which lead to me learning as little as possible. In the end I ended up with 50 attempts stretched out across a whole month. I was so salty that my Controller still has scars till this day.

@@tcyb this is'nt my first souls game and it was not my first playthrough. I already beat her on my first playthrough but I used player summons so I do for myself not count that victory. The conditions that my "true" playthrough had were, no magic, no effects like bleed, scarlet rot, frostbite etc., no summons (both player or spirit), and no major cheeses. If you went through 5 souls games and finished each multiple times, you start to develope methods and strategies that make the harder bosses segnificantly easier and more enjoyable, plus I already was familiar with her moveset so that helped.

This is the guy who had thr grafted blade greatsword and medium shield with the black armor. Thank you for being the one to beat her. But I also gotta shout out my boy Dean. Dean, we never won, but our synergy as mage and fighter was unparalleled. We got so close bro

The DLC is coming and I'm leaving this comment so that people can remember what will happen when Miquella finds out that it was us who killed her beloved sister. The most feared of demigods, I hope he's a good guy.
