Ойындар

In a place like the Lands Between... what makes a villain? Is it the invaders hindering your quest? The Shardbearers standing in our way? Or is it a so-called friend with ulterior motives? Today we discuss the background, story, and motivations of Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing.

    I think what Gideon witnessed wasn't Marika's will, it was Radagon's. We don't know much about Marika, except that she had active machinations against the GW. "Preserving the Order and having Tarnished struggle for eternity" seems a lot more like Radagon's deal.

    The issue that I have with assuming Gid (who is shown to be a competent scholar and spy master throughout the game) is simply wrong about Marika's plans is that there are two potential motives for Marika and both can be interpreted where Gid is 'mostly right'. Maraki's motivation is to be 'eternal' ... in this case Gid is completely right as in order to be truly and forever immortal the realm has to stay in its present state, the Greater Will can't be allowed the opportunity to announce any more potential heirs and the Tarnished by and large play a destabilizing role to prevent anyone from gaining the throne. ... In this case Gid's only mistake is not understanding the plot armor being the PC in a video game provides the Tarnished of No Renown. Marika's motivation is to strike a blow against the Greater Will itself by having the Tarnish slay her and truly destroying the Elden Ring and its cycles of Gods and Divine Trees. ... In this case Gid's mistake is assuming that a God can not truly be slain, although he is only partially wrong given that in the two cases where Maraki is truly slain the the Elden Ring isn't restored another God takes her place, either Ranni or the Frenzy Flame.

    @@mlmii1933 I think its the last one. I do believe Marika secretly want change. Anything than the enternal existence. She show rebellion against the greater will and seems as ling as the player seems bringing change to the world she willign to keep it alive by the grace. Even if the player go with the frenzy flame she dont mind and that's the only case when she can see the player intention. Every other ending is the players decision so if the player eventually decide to restore the golden order and set the greater will back on top is something she couldn't predict and for her that's considered as a bad ending.

    The only mistake Gideon has made is making the enemy of us. We felled Radahn, Mohg, Malenia, Renalla, Morgott, Rykard, Maliketh - what hope did he had?! He saw what we did to all of them through his Scarabs. He stole their incantations and spells. Yet he never bothered to think for a moment: "If that Tarnished so easily felled Demigods, should I really be opposing them?! This Tarnished slayed Dragons, Gargoyles, Dragonkin, and even godlike creatures like Rune Bears of the Mountaintop. There is no way to oppose this thing without sacrificing one's life." But alas, his hubris has proven to be his downfall.

    His conection to Seluvis is interesting; they seem to have been working together at some point, at the albenauric village there is a Omenkiller at the end that we can fight with Nepheli (similar Omenkiller that we can find possesed in Seluvis hidden lab), one puppet in particular paints a clearer picture: Dolores the sleeping Arrow a Roumdtablehold member that was a Crititc/friend to Gideon. Overall good video on Gideon although info have a slightly different interpretation of him as a villain. I see Gideon as a man trying to be a true monster and failing because he can never rid himself entirely of his humanity. When you get Seluvis' potion, Gideon will have corresponding dialogue about the potion, opting that you give it to him and just lie to Seluvis. Sure this could just be him screwing over Seluvis but he'll still give you the option even after he disowned Nepheli. I always interpreted that to mean that even after disowning her Gideon still cares about her to some degree. It could also be why he disowned her, because he was attached to her and didn't want someone who he cared about to know what he'd done. He even acknowledges you if you finish Nepheli's quests. That's why he keeps Ensha around is because Ensha doesn't ask questions or even talk. I also theorize that Gideon also knew long before the end that a tarnished could never become Elden Lord but still chose to try anyway.

    As for how Gideon came to lead the Round Table, we gain some insite after felling our second demi-god. The finger crone at the round table tells us that she's not ever seen so many runes together, not since "Young Gideon". This implies that in his younger days he claimed at least two runes, as well as leadership of the round table. I've always wondered though.. Which runes did he hold, and how did he lose them?

    Based on his combat encounter dialogue it makes it seem that he attempted to connect with the goddess of the Golden Order. Though there are technically 3 entities housed in the one divine body, which makes me think that he connected with the mind of Radagon who was more inclined to preserve and maintain the world versus Marika who wanted to reset or reforge the world. Apparently eyes on scarabs are the same as Eye Surcoat insignia. Really fun theory that fits him. I was gonna type a few sentence about how Gideon is actually weak and he realizes it and that's why he tries to pretend the goal is not to be Elden Lord but I realized that is a waste of everyone's time because it isn't the reason. Gideon is there to stall us. The junk he says in the final fight, he is trying to keep us from going to the Erdtree. He's desperate for us to give up or at least just wait a little longer. Why you ask? Well consider what is pretty much on the other side of Gideon... Godfrey. Godfrey emerged and Gideon like a good little puppy followed him out of the Roundtable Hold to the Erdtree. Gideon either offered to wait or was commanded to do so to forestall any who would interrupt Godfrey's reunion with Marika in the Erdtree. If you think I'm wrong consider these absolute facts. Gideon gives us a lot of lip service before he does anything in the fight (in fiction and in real life from the school yard to the terrible fields of war long windedness is a stall tactic). There is no one between Gideon and Godfrey. Godfrey is closer to the Erdtree than Gideon. Meaning Godfrey would have to go through Gideon or got there before him. So Gideon either saw him and stopped where he was or was commanded by Godfrey when they arrived together. While weighing those also note that Gideon was posing and waiting. Consider what would have happened if Gideon could win against us or we listen to him and give up. What's the next logical thing that happens in the sequence of events with Godfrey pretty much right at the entrance of the tree? I'm not saying he served Godfrey the whole time, but I think when Godfrey showed up Gideon saw the writing on the wall.

    honestly, i doubt godfrey would have commanded gideon to stall any tarnished claimants. Godfrey was probably itching for a good fight when he came back to the lands between. Gideon probably just figured that's he'd have to fight both the tarnished player and godfrey for the throne and chose us first, because i did not believe we were stronger than godfrey at this point.

    @@SophiaLilithUwU Because he is a great warrior who enjoys a battle does not mean he lacks a sense of priority nor the advisory command of Serosh. The world is on the brink of ending I doubt he is thinking about tossing hands for fun especially with the Elden Ring 20 feet away. As weak sauce as Gideon is, and knowns he is, there is no way he genuinely believed he was gonna fight us off and then fight Godfrey. If anything Gideon would have tried to trick us into working together since we are already listening to him. He'd have us go double team Godfrey and then he'd just stab us in the back. Not to mention, Godfrey was right at the door with it's last barrier removed it wouldn't make sense for Gideon (second closest contender to the door) to turn around stand in a pose and wait, give a discouraging speech, and pick a fight with 3rd place. The only reason Godfrey gives us any attention is because we killed his son.

    @@Writh811 Before the battle against godfrey, morgotts body turns into guidance of grace and points godfrey directly to us. So even if the path into the erdtree is open, it seems important for godfreys personal journey to duke it out with us, after all he could just get up and enter the elden ring to have his audience with marika. So honestly the "we are not important to godfrey" doesnt fly with me. He even acknowledges how "long and hard" we fought. He clearly respects us. Godfrey believes a crown is earned with strenght. It's inconceivable to me that he would ignore the other most powerful competitors and make the race for the elden ring a race of speed and time where he wins by the technicality of "i touched it first" rather than by a test of strength and battle prowess.

  • @Writh811

    @Writh811

    @@SophiaLilithUwU I don't think we are gonna convince each other at this point lol. I would just say, yeah we were important because we killed his son and no other reason. His fight with us has nothing to do with the Elden Ring, we murdered his little boy (Serosh roars the tears Godfrey won't shed in that cutscene) and the last act of Morgott was to point the finger at his killer. Godfrey's talks of how long and hard we fought is vaguely applied, he attributes the struggle of all tarnished to the one before him. Any tarnished that walked up at that point could be assumed to have fought long and hard since they are there. Godfrey has no reason/way to know we personally fought long and hard. But he does know we fought and killed his boy. If we are so important to him beyond that what was going to be his next action if we didn't show up and events were allowed to proceed. Even if we were alive, quit the quest, and were just farting around in Jarberg after lighting the tree up. The logical answer is just walk into the Erdtree because that is what is most important at the moment. Otherwise if he was such no-think-battle-lord why hasn't he been stomping around the Lands Between until the end? What demi-gods did he bring low to get there? As far as we know Godfrey was still in the regular world beyond the fog until somehow the world became aware the Erdtree was burning and he courted a fight he knew he could lose just to show up in time to still have a say in the next Era. Weirdly there aren't very many answers beyond this one that don't make him look like he wasn't hiding in the cupboard until the thorns on the Erdtree were cleared. Which would not be very Godfrey by either of our definitions. I hope you had/have a happy holiday!

    I feel like Gideon Ofnir is going to get more content in the DLC where you can actually ally with him. I feel like there should be some way for him to, given enough knowledge, not fall into the despair and actually comprehend the truth of Marika. Your character helping him acquire knowledge has no effect on his actions, and separately there is no game ending for getting all of the great runes; it doesn't even matter which ones you get so long as you get the two to enter Leyndell plus Morgott's. This leads me to believe that if you can get Miquella's Great Rune in the DLC, that you'd be able to have a Gideon Ofnir All Great Runes ending. (Maybe also extract Ranni's Great Rune from the moon)

    I like Gideon Ofnir's ties to Odin Norse mythology. The both employ spies in the form of NPC's (or ravens) to gather all knowledge. Both are ruthless and quite capable in all forms of magic, making them formidable opponents. That said, Ofnir is another name for "Odin" from mythology.
