You have an excellent point about verbalizing quest directions. There are some quests where you actually have *zero* clue what the next step might be and have to fumble blindly in places you've already been to, and some in character hint would certainly help.

Voicework eats actually a lot of Space and there is not that much in Elden Ring. At least compared to other games like RDR2, Horizon, GTA, Final Fantasy 7 Remake etc. In RDR 2 they recorded a lot of voicework twice even for conversations. When you are close to someone you talk and when your far away you shout etc. Things like that make the Filesizes so huge of some of these games.

I cannot put this down. I thought it would wear off after I got back to my workweek but I just can't wait to play it the minute I get home. Something about it just hits the spot. I thought the controls were so clumsy, slow, and bad at first, but learned to be precise, never mash buttons, and be patient, and it just clicked, now the controls feel amazing and second nature, sprinting and mounted both, you really grow into this game if you are willing to learn how to play it from the ground up, and leave your hack and slash gaming history at the door when you go in, it won't help here, quite the opposite. With Elden Ring, its nothing fancy or spectacular that pulls me back in, it's just the feeling you get when you're knee deep in the world and look at your map and there's so many different paths you have to continue down, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger, I was shocked when I realized what Leyndall was, and thought the northern tip of the map would be Raya Lucaria basically.

One thing that's stood out to me is the sections of the map that have these giant rock formations you can jump your horse up. There really is no point to jumping your horse up these rocks, as there is rarely any kind of prize. In fact, you can usually just run down the road and find one of those wind jumps that gets you up there much more easily. But you CAN do the horse jumping, so I kept thinking, they clearly knew this was possible, so why did they put this in the game if there were no prizes? I kept jumping to search for prizes, but didn't find any. After watching your video, suddenly it all made sense to me - that the reward for spending all that time trying to jump up rocks was the practice and familiarity with the particular moves of the horse. Insane.

Another reason for such cragged and broken topography, aside from It's service to the art direction and making it look cool, is the game hides stuff from you by doing so. The cliffs and cracks of the landscape lend themselves very well to the game's organic and natural sense of mystery and discovery. Catacombs and mineshafts on cliffsides, or riding up and over the landscape as it ascends and plateaus to reveal an encampment or an Evergaol. The little details on the map reveal just enough to tell you there might be something there so you'll find yourself carefully studying it and pinpointing those curious spots with a beacon so you can make your way there, riding and leaping over the landscape and finding things in between rather than fast traveling everywhere.

The fact that it never holds your hand, gives you map markers or fairy dust trails is so refreshing. You can lose yourself just exploring or get lost trying to find a quest location. It's really amazing how *not* taking the Ubisoft approach of putting question marks and other random icons all over the map actually encourages exploration and discovery. There could be something cool to find around virtually any corner of the world and it's there purely for the player to discover, not for the game to point out and award you an extra .1% to its completion percentage. I wish more games would do stuff like this.

Ubisucks just made it ubiquitous (and boring) CONSTANTLY distracting you with useless filler because their worlds are so artificially large that they need to do _anything_ to distract the player from that fact. The verticality and overall sense of scale in Elden Ring is a real achievement. The core design philosophy reminds me a LOT of Dark Souls 1 which, in its own right, was praised for it's level design. I think this will be the legacy of Elden Ring -- FromSoft managed to create an "open world game" while maintaining all of their industry-leading level design. Also for anyone interested in further exploring the LORE of Elden Ring, keep an eye on the KZread Channel "VaatiVidya" -- he will have some FASCINATING insights into the world of The Lands Between in the very near future!

Love how you pointed out that most games allow you to turn off a lot of the hud elements and I agree with you that a lot of those games do a good job or explaining where you need to go and what to do. The thing with Elden Ring for me though is the world is so well imagined that you can drop me in any part of the map and I’ll know exactly where I am and how to get back to the opening area without ever looking at the map.

Great look! I also loved how balanced your initial review of the game was. The world here reminds me alot of how BotW handles things and the difference between open world design. HZD for instance or Ubisoft, or whatever. Usually you are "going" to a spot. You know where something is and you go there and check things off a list. This isn't terrible. Forbidden West is a terrific game with amazing creature design, an amazing world, etc...But in Elden Ring or BotW for instance; you are exploring, you are going somewhere and maybe you find something, maybe you don't. You aren't going to a point where you know where something is unless you pick up on the actual physical map queues (caves in Elden Ring for instance have a distinct look on the actual physical map). In BotW, you see something off in the distance that looks cool and you just go there. Both these games are super different than what you typically see in open world where it's "this is marked for this quest (even sidequests), go here". And in Elden Ring especially, you are handsomely rewarded by exploring. The early game in Elden Ring especially gives you so many different early options for whatever style you want. One other thing with Elden Ring is how great the NPCs are. They've always been interesting, but I feel like the rest of the game, this game really increased the volume of NPCs, the dialogue, the questlines, the art of them, etc...Plus just how they melded different art designs from all their games. This really feels like a cumulation of all their souls games. It's crazy to think how they've been building on the art/design since freaking Kings Field.

I think one thing nobody talks about with Elden Ring is that it’s the first From Software game that gives you an opportunity to simply practice combat. Many games can indeed remove their HUDs. However it's painfully clear that in most of them the game was built with the HUD in mind so without it the game doesn't function nearly as smoothly. For example the NPCs and the world don't give enough information on where to go for quests so without the HUD and without prior knowledge(previous playthrough, guide, etc) you tend to get lost(and not in a good way).

Menus in Elden Ring are pretty good when every invader and coop player is hot swapping their entire load out mid roll and mid fight. Think people are disliking the menus because they refuse to read the controls at the bottom of the screen or reading the explanations. Most people didn't read any of it so they don't know they can check off sites of grace, sort by recently acquired, not using the chest to reduce the number of items to go through while in combat or even using the pouches.

It’s hilarious that in a 1-hour video he lightly criticized a single game element (which is objectively terrible, btw) and it prompted you to rush to the comments to defend it. The reputation of the Souls community is well earned.

Lol yea. I forgot about the chest. I have 3 weapons I swap around depending on the enemy and I have to go through the whole weapon inventory to find the one I need because I never put the rest in storage. Thank you for reminding me. Lol

This is a beautiful game. FromSoft has really stepped up their visuals. If only it didn't have such performance issues marring an otherwise outstanding game.

Meh. It looks ok in 4K on pc but when compared to Demons Souls PS5 they have a long way to go

@@jamesbb4 It doesn't sound like you've played it. Play it and you'll see what I'm talking about. I was as skeptical as anyone about what to expect with Elden Ring's graphics, it being a FromSoft game, but this is one of the most beautiful games out there and I've been playing Horizon Forbidden West. Strong art direction can elevate visuals beyond pure technical proficiency.

Most important thing to me: "Let the player figure it out." HZD was my favorite game last gen, and I was looking forward to HFW, but too much accessibility and hand holding, too easy to change the difficulty settings on the fly, and as much as I love that game, I set it aside for Elden Ring. Elden Ring is just refreshing among the landscape of open world games. No hand holding, you can miss things, no quest or waypoint tracking, no radar-style minimap,. That's fantastic. I didn't know just how much I needed and wanted that after years of Ubisoft-style open world games everyone makes. Also, the difficulty. I don't want difficulty settings. I want to talk to friends about if they beat this boss or how they beat that one, and we are all playing on the same initial difficulty. Save difficulty for NG+, where it just gets harder, and leveling, where you can make it easier. A problem I have with HFW is if you can change the difficulty at any second to Easy or Story, then what is even the point of challenging yourself to learn and overcome. The game loses that important feeling for me when I know I can just do that at any moment. I love that I cannot do that here. Props too for mentioning Larry Elmore. Met him at a Gen Con one year. Such a great guy and he sort of defined role-playing and imagination for an entire generation, just as you said. Can see some of that here.

The best part about it is that exploring the world doesn't feel like a chore. I'm filling out the map with points of interest as I find them, not having check off a list of spots.
