at the beginning they mention that zebras are black (with white stripes). Then in the eenie meenie part, Raph says "it's not a tiger" because in the original(?) that they are referencing, instead of 'tiger' the N word was used. So to say "Speaking of stripes" so quickly as a response to the tiger comment from Raph, in reference to zebras being black is just really really fast and clever! Fuck, as a rural Welsh child this unlocked a memory. We used to do eenie meenie minie mo catch a n***** by his toe, then like, at age 10 people started doing tiger because what we was saying was a bad word. Now, no one explained to me what the n word was, no one explained to me what it meant, everyone was just like no no no we gotta say tiger and I was like, TIGERS HAVE CLAWS NOT TOES THIS DOESNT MAKE SENSE, and got like, STUPID mad at having to use tiger. Anyway, grew up, yadda yadda, forgot all about it until this short, this short reminded me that young me was annoyed I couldn’t use the n word as a child. IN MY DEFENCE, had no idea what the word meant at all

I learned about it early, since the people from the places where my parents were from did *not* say tiger. My parents were (and by extension I am) of the view that even using the tiger version is bad, because tiger was basically just chosen as a euphemistic way of saying the original word without actually saying it.

I learned the tiger version as a kid, then learned what the original was as an adult. And then one day I was trying to choose a sandwich at subway and started in with "eenie meenie minie mo" by reflex before realizing that I was a white dude reciting that rhyme in the presence of half a dozen black folks and stopped. And then I realized that stopping after the first line, rather than continuing with the second line of the tiger version made it sound like I was thinking the second line of the original silently, but that continuing after several seconds silent would sound even more sus. At that point I just wanted to disappear.

There’s a reason why Chris Rock played Marty in Madagascar 😅

Zebras are actually white with black stripes. When born, the stripes start as brown and darken over time. Their coat also goes from rather fuzzy/fluffy before they become slicker.

Zebra have black skin, but their coats are white with black stripes. You can see this as the black stripes end before the belly, but the white continues under. So white is the base color of the coat and black is the stripes on that.
