El Palo is one of the oldest and most traditional fishing districts in the eastern side of the city of Málaga. It's history is closely linked to the sea and its traditions remain intact.
The coast is filled with fishermen's boats that still work in the area, sharing the landscape with the jábegas, a traditional Málaga boat. Now converted into pleasure or competition boats, these typical rowing ships have their origin in the Phoenician times, easily recognizable by the two eyes that decorate the keels.
Visiting one of the beach bars in El Palo is a must if you want to discover and experience the most authentic Málaga. The freshness of seafood and the manner of preparing Victorian anchovies, squid, or red mullet make this popular neighborhood one of the best areas to try fried fish.
