El Calafate is a small town located in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina, close to the border with Chile. It has approximately 21,132 inhabitants. About 270 kilometers from the provincial capital, Río Gallegos.
It is the closest city to Los Glaciares National Park, about 80 kilometers away, where the largest horizontal glacier in the world is located: the Perito Moreno Glacier, which is constantly evolving. It is also located close to another important glacier: the Upsala Glacier.
It is a city in rapid tourist development, offering good hotel infrastructure, a modern airport and excellent tourism options. Its roads are very good, signposted, but with little movement. El Calafate has a cold climate, with an annual average of seven degrees, maximum temperatures around thirteen degrees and minimum temperatures around ten below zero.
The biggest attraction is the extraordinary Los Glaciares National Park, founded in 1937 and declared a World Heritage Site in 1981. It covers an area of ​​725,000 hectares. It contains the Perito Moreno, Upsala, O'nelli, Spegazzinni glaciers, among others. They are part of the Patagonian Ice Field, the third largest reserve of frozen freshwater in the world, after Antarctica and Greenland. They are imposing snow sentinels deposited for centuries in their origins, high in the Andes mountain range. They descend for extensions that reach 170 kilometers.
