Rautavaara tricks us all into singing 12 tone melodies ! The violin concerto and organ concerti too are fabulous !

In his score Rautavaara wrote the scream for an instrument called lion's roar. However, conductor Leif Segerstam wanted to do the screaming himself and apparently it was ok for the composer.

I encountered the last six minutes of this yesterday on the radio, and was transfixed, sitting in my car awaiting the announcement of who this was before entering the supermarket. I thought it was an Alan Hovannes piece I’d never heard before. This guy was a true genius, and deserves to be recognized for the amazing multi faceted and complex approach he employed. This work demonstrates just how far modern popular music has descended from sheer brilliance to male bovine excrement.
