I haven’t read the book but I watched this movie yesterday and I found it very interesting and enjoyable up until the ending. It confused me on how Rebecca went through all of that just to not show up but it left me wondering that maybe Rebecca was Eileen’s alter ego hence the fact that she was madly in love with her and wanted to be like her. She was basically like the “role model” she never had w everything she fantasized about like getting male attention, her confidence, etc.

This actually makes sense and I would like to add to this theory. I think Rebecca was actually real BUT not the Rebecca we see in the house in the third act. I think the real Rebecca was really on vacation. We see Eileen day dreaming about self deletion and deleting her father, so it’s entirely possible she imagined the Rebecca we see in the final act. I also think the Rebecca she goes out with to drink is also her imagination and that’s why they switched names at the bar and the men at the bar looked so confused when she went to dance with Rebecca because she was really dancing by herself. We seen how drunk Rebecca was when she drove off when in reality it was just Eileen who drove off that drunk and crashed. I’m actually glad I found this comment cause this theory makes so much sense and kind of redeems the ending for me.

I really hope they release a black & white cut of this film. It felt like I was in watching a true film noir movie from Billy Wilder or Alfred Hitchcock.

Another aspect of the novel is how literally dirty Eileen's body is. She rarely bathes. Strange detail.

I think it's because psychologically many times people who have been sexually assaulted or are trying to prevent being sexually assaulted will not clean or wash themselves in order to make themselves less attractive to their perpetrators. It's heavily implied that Eileen's dad did something to Eileen's sister, so I think that Eileen might be trying to prevent it from happening to her by never showering and remaining dirty and stinky. In the novel she's also anorexic and takes laxatives, so we know that her mental health isn't all there.

I've also come around to Anne Hathaway and can't wait to see this. I really enjoyed Lady Macbeth as well and I feel like it should be a secret film because it's been referenced so many times. Pugh is ruthless in that role.

Rebecca didn't want a lover, she wanted an accomplice, or stooge. She analysed Eileen the entire time, and disrespected her so much to fool her to come over for xmas eve. Eileen surprised her tho.. to see her disquieted violence erupt, & the lengths Eileen would go to feel independent, like her idol Rebecca. Fun little Xmas movie with an effective soundtrack, and moody visuals bathed in a delightful tungsten glow, offset by the frigid grey of dirty snow.

I'm to the point where I'm only a minute into any of your videos that I hit the thumbs up button every time. You guys never fail to entertain 👍

Marin Ireland is also an acclaimed stage actor who has frequently appeared in plays in NYC. One cool thing about living close to NYC is that we get to watch truly great stage actors at the height of their skills, on stage. I noticed their theater bios often list character parts in indie films and parts in TV shows. But it's so cool to see them do their thing on stage, in an often more intimate setting of an off Broadway theater.

She was fantastic! I didn't have much of a problem with the ending, because I cared about her character so much (thanks to her incredible performance), and I wanted the idea of her possible survival to be left open, when it appeared she would probably not have this option. Cool to hear that in the book Mrs. Polk does live.

I found it bizarre that Eileen's world just exploded into violence, and a murder plot, perpetuated in her mind by having the 'relationship'....Feeling like Joseph who wants answers, and Nick who's satisfied!😅😊

I can't wait to see this! I really love Anne Hathaway, I think she's an amazing actress!! Congrats on 30 thousand subs!! 2024 is going to bring many more!

Very good review and discussion on the film as I agree with Joseph’s comments. I wish the film took more time with Rebecca & Eileen’s connection/manipulation and allowed more discovery of what makes Rebecca different from others. Part of the film felt too rushed. Overall, I still loved the performances from all the actors and the time period captured.

I thought it was interesting Nick brought up Olivia deHavilland as a plain Jane, as I definitely thought of 1949's great "The Heiress" when watching "Eileen," as in both films the father cuts down his daughter while comparing her to someone else more beautiful and, just like Catherine, Eileen waits for the person who is going to "take her away from all this" to no avail.

@@alexander3699 I wrote about Montgomery's work in "The Heiress" years ago on my blog (And Your Little Blog, Too), as part of a Blogathon someone ran regarding his work. I think he gives a great performance as Morris Townsend and, working with William Wyler, creates an intriguingly ambiguous character, making one not entirely sure of Morris' motives. However, I once saw the movie with a packed house at a tribute to Olivia deHavilland, and the audience was actually hissing Morris towards the end of the film, so they weren't buying into any excuse he had!

I agree, I've heard the book is better so I think I'm going to read the book if the movie was any indication of how good it will be, there felt like there just needed to be more to the character development in the movie

Caught this last night. Felt it had one of the slowest build-ups to a plot twist ever, but I definitely sat up for the last third of the film, and bought into what happens. Both Anne Hathaway and Marin Ireland (whom I can't recall ever seeing before) just got nominated for an award, and I can see why. I thought the director did a great job capturing a specific time and place, 1960's Massachusetts during a bleak, snowy winter.

I hate films like these--ones that feel like they're audition tapes for better films saying, "see, I can play these types of characters too".

If these movie characters were half as professional as Joseph, there would be no plots 😅

Enjoyed your review. I enjoyed the movie as well. I feel the third act twist was fantastic - one of the best "what now?" line deliveries I have ever seen. The whole movie changes in seconds. I like the unanswered questions. I believe the sloppy state of affairs with the car and Mrs. Polk at the end is an important filling-in-the-blanks about Eileen's state of mind. As I see it, if we believe that both Rebekah and Eileen have had something very bad happen to them - something like what happened to Leo Polk - that a lot of their behavior makes sense. There are hints in the movie that almost seem to shout it if you think about it from that perspective.

Sandy Dennis in "That Cold Day in the Park" is very creepy & hitchcockian.

This seems like my kind of film. I'll have to check it out. Anne Hathaway looks 😍 👌🏾

This is another case or a director going berserk when adapting a book. The way this is presented, Rebecca is an imaginary character and Eileen created her to channel her trauma of being abused by her father.

I believe you mentioned about another movie in this movie review. I have just watched the movie Theo and Hugo 5:59 last night, I love it! Plus I love watching French movies, especially psychological dramas or psychological thrillers, or deep romance. Two movies of my favorites from from my late teenage years or early 20s: 'The Piano Teacher', and 'Lila dit ça'. Thank you for sharing. I don’t know if it served as an influence but watching the film I was very much reminded of the Wiseman documentary “Titicut Follies”.

Sounds a bit like that movie Stoker with Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman.

Literally the whole time I thought this was a twist about Aileen Wuornos life… I guess it’s just bc the names are similar.. & the truck at the end really sealed the deal for me. But I guess immmmm was off lol

Just watched this movie tonight. Anne shined in this role and, dare I say, it’s her best acting! 👍🏻 I’ve never seen the woman who played Eileen before, but she was also excellent.

So is this an unreliable narrator situation? Rebecca doesn't seem like the type to get in that situation but she does seem like the type to use someone else to take the fall in a femme fatale type of way. What was the motive, though? Glad in the book at least Eileen didn't get blamed... Or in the movie version do we just hope Eileen's creepy dad gets framed? There are too many questions! 🤨

it’s the same story that’s been told over and over. The depressed, suicidal white girl keep to herself crazy dad in a small town and at the end she loses it and do something crazy. Then finds herself enough, to say fuck it Im gonna live my life the end. Then everyone screams perfect performance, Oscar, Oscar Same thing in girl interrupted

Definitely respect AH as an actress on a new higher level after this performance. Enjoyed the mood and feel of this film very much. The musical score was excellent but seemed forced sometimes into scenes to make the film more “cool”. The ending was not resolved for me at all. I did enjoy it though and would recommend to others who enjoy this type of genre, even if at the very least to hear the bizarre accent that I couldn’t replicate no matter how hard I tried lol.

I also watched Lady Macbeth immediately after (per your nod), and I double down on my claim that ever since Midsommar I will watch Florence Pugh in any project she’s in. Loved it.

I really liked this movie! I had no idea what to expect but Anne H is STUNNING in this! *I* fell in love with her myself! 😍 And if you really pay attention there's signs that'll tell you what REALLY happened to Eileen... (if you know anything about s*xual child ab*se then you'll see all the signs in Eileen... ) very sad movie

It has a great premise and good characters but it feels very disjointed. The script needed a lot more work to build it into the movie that it should have been.

The movie was terrible, though I haven't read the book, I sure hope it's not as vague, murky, and all over the place. A lot of people are saying that Rebecca was imaginary but, unless everyone at work is part of a shared delusion, that idea holds no water. Anne Hathaway made it difficult to follow what it was her character actually wanted. Was she romantically interested or wad she purely being manipulative towards the obviously enamored and naive Eileen. I dunno..pick a lane, Rebecca. I think top people are saying it's good so everyone else is following, afraid to say otherwise, but its just not true.

I'm not a fan of Anne Hathaway for various reasons. She is an okay actress but not a great one. Besides she comes across as aloof and conceited. Even so this movie, because of its story, does interest me.
