I have lived in china for 7 years and raised my 5 kids there. CHINESE kid play sports! They just play different sports. Just because they don't play football or ski doesn't meant they don't play sports. Extreme sports are not that popular because you have to have soooo much money to do them. There's just no access to them because of limited availability and money- NOT because there's no interest. It is soooo expensive to raise a child in China.

Girls are not encouraged to play sports, I was born there. It’s drilled in our heads that girls must be more lady-like and playing sports can be too manly and gain too much muscles. It was when I immigrated to the U.S. I realized how different the two cultures are for playing sports.

It can be very affordable. You don't have to do those expensive sports. For example, skate, skateboard, BMX don't cost much. They don't play extreme sports because most parents don't allow them to do dangerous stuff.

I reckon doing sports can help you openning more doors in the future. Everyone is different. You may not have talent in academia. But you may excel in some certain sports. You never know till you do them. Chinese kids or parents are not that open minded yet. And the school system doesn't encurage that. More often pe classes could be replaced by other classes like literature, math, English, etc.

Not trying to be an ass, but not everyone can skip the first week of high school to ski in northern Italy. Up until I had an established career and was making a lot of money, going Skiing or snowboarding was an expensive privilege for me and my friends; we were all middle class too. Just trying to say there are countless athletes who came from near nothing, and I would wager to say the majority of people would relate to ambassadors that weren't brought up in wealth and did not have unlimited Olympic support. Everyone knows she's great, but lets be responsible for the spotlight we cast because it sets standards to impressionable youth.

@@sophonblock76 As an amateur athlete I understand what you are trying to say and it is incorrect. You don’t get paid squat until you secure sponsorships. How about the year of competing before? You think sponsorships are given after the first competition out of x amount of athletes? No. What about flying across the world to different areas to participate in competitions; a flight from US to Europe alone is nearly 1000$. Did you have 1000$ in high school for a flight excluding food and transport and board? Take a look at every sport, especially tennis, to see what amateurs and even pros have to do to make their skim earnings.

@@sophonblock76 You've missed my point entirely. Im saying that she is obviously wealthy, and people are better related to athletes that aren't, promoting a better positive mindset. You have said you don't need to be rich to be a top athlete. Well you dont NEED to be rich to be a top athlete, but how many top athletes are rich? Or be wealthy with family to have an uncle or aunt make a diet plan for you along with your training camp? Do you honestly think the MAJORITY of top athletes, especially amateurs can fly to northern Italy to ski when HIGH SCHOOL, is in session? What exactly are you disputing? Additionally, I can tell that you have never competed before. So you don't understand the structure. You are thinking of the middle of the journey. Once you have competed many times, secured sponsorships, made it into the light, its calmer waters. But how do you get there? You think every teenager can land a modeling gig or sponsorship in their first or second season of competing without any influence? Athletes who win nationals across many sports dont even get sponsored. Many athletes amateur and even pros struggle with ends meet, and somehow you believe a teenager is able to instantly land sponsorships, make all the ends meet, travel and compete multiple times across the world without family money and influence?

Ever since I got the green card, My appreciation towards US for accepting me as a member of their society has been sincere. I feel like she's constantly pushing the narrative of inspiration & youth skiing in China, but realistically, skiing is hella expensive and extreme "big air" skiing is even more expensive/inaccessible because it requires skiers to be relatively young, able-bodied, and rich enough to afford potential injuries. Most extreme skiers are 18-25 who started skiing very young & had proper training/support (ie in Europe or US) to try extreme skiing. but I'm sure many Chinese parents are not willing to risk spending thousands for traveling/training on a sport that could hurt their kid (& their future). It makes her seem really shallow because it shows her privilege (with San Francisco wealthy upbringing, private lessons at Lake Tahoe, while blending in with conservative Chinese elites due to her mom) in advertising that anyone in China can be like her. People are further disillusioned bc she's somehow a fashion model staring on magazine covers repping high-end brands outside of skiing. Literally only the top 0.01% in the world could be a "like her" bc she/her family has ample wealth, resources, connections, & opportunities at her disposal👀😓

If you think Eileen is the first athlete to do this, boy oh boy are you misinformed. In Rio alone, and in table tennis alone, there were 44 Chinese born athletes, most of whom were raised in China and received training in China during their youths. Any idea how many of them actually represented China? Merely 6...geez I didn't hear any complaints from any of you who are griping now, and not even from China. Let's be fair here. In case anyone is wondering, I'm speaking as an American, who's definitely no stranger to importing talents. If I never complained about the US reeping such benefits, it'd be unfair for me to gripe now when the reverse is happening. The west just can't seem to fathom something like this happening to them, because overwhelmingly throughout history, it's always happened to someone else, in favor of the west. The world has changed and will continue to evolve; everyone needs to get used to an ever shifting paradigm and stop holding double standards.

Also, why is everyone asking where she is when she's been on TV doing interviews and even went to the Olympics, chatting and interacting with the public. I guess it's the anti-China narrative we've been sold by the MSM propaganda and how we're very willing to buy into it. Not because she won gold but because she has been asked repeatedly if she had to renounce her American citizenship in order to compete for China and she's dodged the question every time. Unfortunately one of her sponsors leaked that she did but all that info is currently being scrubbed. For her part, I don't think she has even given that much thought about political climate given that she advocated using a VPN while in China lol. As long as her and her family will be financially rewarded and she can focus on being at the top of her game, she sees nothing wrong.

However, the Chinese education system already is there, which focus merely just the academic achievement and goals, especially the importance of the exams. In this system, students have to try very hard on getting better marks in their exams to get better high school or university. If they have to do the homework until 10 pm everyday, how do they have time to do any kind of sports? Her idea is amazing, but the barrier is there because the system has not yet been changed.

What’s fair is never equal, vice versa! With the population size like China, the elite group is proportionally small which means you either work hard to climb to the top or you accept whatever else you’re given. The exam system in China gives everyone a fair chance to change fate, admittedly it’s not equal by design.

I understand her passion to inspire people through sport which does have unifying qualities but I'm pretty sure (correct me if I'm wrong) she learned how to ski/snowbord in the US using facilities inside the country, so in that respect she kind of owes part of her skill set to the country that provided her with an opportunity to learn. Her thinking it's her individual expression is kind of selfish to be honest. As an immigrant myself I've pondered which country I would represent in a similar situation and I always felt I would go with the one that impacted my skills the most. Then again I'm pretty sure she/her parents paid for all the programs she attended as a young girl so it's not like it was provided to her for free or paid by tax dollars. Delving further into it her parents could afford the programs only because of the well paying jobs they were able to find inside the country but had to do work themselves. I guess my argument would be more relevant had she been taught through government/tax supported programs in a more socialist country. All in all she's a positive person with pure intentions full of charisma and (maybe a little naive) desire to inspire the world for the better, props to her. Thanks for taking the time to read my monologue. Please let me know how you guys feel about that by commenting.

Hi, I think you might've misunderstood why she decided to switch nationalities. She was raised by her single Chinese mother and grandmother ever since she was young (but her father is in fact American, however he wasn't present during her childhood) so I think it is understandable she wanted to represent the Chinese team since she was quite heavily influenced by her mother and grandmother's culture growing up. Of course, I do agree its difficult for normal people to replicate her success without enough money to afford these classes.
