    While it sucked it was not nominated, many believe the reason the Oscars changed from 5 nominations to 10 (or up to 10 if 10 aren't available) is because The Dark Knight was missed that year. So it didn't get a nomination, but it changed Oscar history.

    I think Forrest Gump gets added appreciation from American audiences - and American awards shows - due to the subject matter. It's a slice of Americana that tugs at our cultural identity. So as an American, it totally makes sense to me that foreign audiences might not feel as strongly - it's just different cultural context. That said, I do agree that there's a reasonable argument that both Shawshank and Pulp Fiction are stronger from a technical or artistic perspective.

  • @viddork

    @viddork

    5 жыл бұрын

    Not so much. It's easy to neglect the fact that Forrest Gump was a visual effects spectacular. Lacking alien creatures, space battles, and imaginary worlds, you could miss the fact that it was filled with ground-breaking technical marvels throughout the film. While Shawshank is a great film, and Pulp Fiction is certainly more influential, for its achievements in the art of what can be done with film, Gump probably deserves its award.

    Star Wars lost to Annie Hall, which is honestly one of my favorite movies of all time. I would argue that 1977 was one of the most Iconic years in cinema. Star Wars, Annie Hall, Saturday Night Fever, Close Encounters. Think about this: Spiderman into the Spiderverse was arguably in the top 5 for Sci-fi movies of the year, action of the year, obviously animated and most definitely in the top 10 movies out of the year(If not easily in the top 5, it was in my top 3 at least). It can't win anything except best animated(Or something attached to animating) in any award show for 2018. It is, in my opinion, the single greatest snubbed film of the last ten years.

  • @ArlanKels

    @ArlanKels

    Spiderverse deals with alternate timelines/realities and traveling between them via using technology. It also has technology based villains rather than genetic abominations. And a couple of the heroes of the story are crack science geeks who use science to science things when needed. Spiderverse is very much a sci-fi movie, but it is not a quintessential sci-fi film. I'd say something like I, Robot or Ex Machina that deals with future science and it's potential impact at a social level is "Proper sci-fi". However Spiderverse is still labelled sci-fi due to it's use of "beyond normal" science. World War Z, for example, is considered sci-fi. All of the super hero movies are labelled sci-fi as well. That includes Incredibles 2, for 2018. However people basically look at an animated movie and the "Animated" part trumps everything else. It's my biggest complaint. Voice acting can be a lot harder at times than physical acting and requires a different set of skills.

    Spiderman 2 IS considered science fiction. The Avengers, Stargate, Iron Man, Armageddon.. They've all won science fiction awards. Yes. Armageddon, the story about oilers going up to blow up an asteroid before it hits the planet, won the science fiction of the year award via the Saturn Awards.

    Citizen Kane can only be a technical masterpiece. Script, dialog, acting (well that more of period problem) is subpar. Cinematography on the other hand is quite amazing. Although, I would never watch How Green Was My Valley so maybe there are a point in being snubbed) Dances with Wolves was a great movie. But "mafia movies" are more popular, so I understand why people think that Goodfellas was snubbed that year.

    @JCLegoMan I suffered from such ignorance, but with 2001: A Space Odyssey. Everyone kept saying it was one of the greatest films of all time, so I automatically thought and felt it is one of the greatest films of all time, even though I hadn't watched it. When I did watch it was one of the most boring, dull, coma inducing films I had ever watched. It was so hard for me to keep trying to watch it. I'm surprised I didn't fall asleep, and that ending didn't help at all.

  • @ThreadBomb

    @ThreadBomb

    It's hard to take seriously the opinions of people whose film knowledge only goes back two decade, plus a few 80s classics and Star Wars. Citizen Kane IS a great film. Not only does it look good, but it's moving and profound. Same with 2001. But I guess if a movie doesn't rely on action, spectacle, simplistic characterisation and simple good vs evil themes, it must "suck" by definition.

  • @somestuff7876

    @somestuff7876

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@ThreadBomb Well, I personally love Space Odyssey. But again, it's a good mix of how movie looks and feels and at what age you saw it. I had no previous knowledge of this movie, same as with Shining and a Clockwork Orange. Saw them as 15-year-old with subtitles (as one does with Kubrick films if you don't know the language). It certainly left its mark on me. Citizen Kane doesn't "suck", it just doesn't hold up. Some scenes were impressive on technical level as in "how the hell did they even shot it back then?". Sometimes nostalgia helps: I love The Godfather; Goodfellas on the other hand is alright movie, but I saw it much later and... it's just ok. My "star wars" are Back to The Future trilogy. And when I finally gave up and watched Star Wars at age of 20 something... first one was alright, there rest is kinda meh. Characters like Yoda and Vader were especially disappointing. Luke is the usual blank slate. I was late to the party, should have watch it while I was a child would probably seen it through the same nostalgia glasses as BTF right now. Sometimes I'll watch a movie for the same reason as people above. "It's a classic I should give it a watch, I guess". Raging Bull - the way it was shot sure was great, movie as a whole is just ok. Taxi Driver, Alien - amazing movies that I would love even movie if I didn't saw bits and pieces of them though my whole life) The Apartment 1960 - movie that surprised the hell out of me. The subject, acting (most of it), dialog. My point is that you can't dismiss people opinions just because they didn't like the same thing you did. Shame that they feel this way about 2001. But to each they own. It's alright.

    In my opinion Dances With Wolves is an amazing film and I still tear up at certain parts in the film. Yes, I agree that it is really long and not the type of movie that you can pop on for a movie night, but I would say it is the sort of movie that you can just watch once to fully experience it. The first time I watched it I was quite young, but it still left a mark on me. I remember watching it with my dad, and him crying by the end, which is something not many films can do. in conclusion, I would say its a masterpiece.
