Eguisheim is a French commune located in the administrative district of Haut-Rhin and, since January 1, 2021, in the territory of the European Community of Alsace, in the Grand Est region. This town is located in the historical and cultural region of Alsace
Eguisheim is an essential stopover during your stay in Alsace!
Located at the southern exit of Colmar, Eguisheim has been ranked among "One of the Most Beautiful Villages in France" since 2003 and won the title of "Favorite Village of the French" in 2013 during the France 2 program presented by Stéphane Bern.
This medieval village appeals for its modest size, its unique architecture, its profusion of flowers in summer, but also for its authentic charm during Christmas time when many activities are offered around the Christmas market.
Eguisheim draws its claim to fame from its architectural ensemble, preserved from the ravages of history and intelligently preserved.
Built around its castle, this medieval city unfolds in concentric circles. You will discover in this original village, fountains, colonial courtyards and a church housing a "Opening Virgin" from the 13th century.
It will be good to stroll along the alleys and thus admire the colorful palette of the houses whose very old inscriptions on the door lintels you will be able to decipher.
Access : Served by a regular bus/tram line
The Alsace wine route is a tourist route that travels through the wine region to discover wines and their production. In 2019, it is labeled Vignobles & Découvertes.
The Alsace wine route, inaugurated in 1953, extends over more than 170 kilometers and 119 municipalities, through the departments of Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin. Its emblem is white wine.
It is an economic activity that is part of wine tourism, where it can be practiced by different modes of travel such as car, motorbike, bicycle or on foot.
History - The territory has been occupied since the Palaeolithic
Several archaeological remains or fossils unearthed in the lehm layers of the municipal territory, in particular in November 1865 the remains of a Neanderthal type man, according to its discoverer Doctor Faudel, prove that Eguisheim has been occupied since the Paleolithic10. The first settlement of the region can be attributed to the Cro-Magnons. Later, other civilizations came to mark the region with their cultural imprints by bringing their artefacts and mortuary customs, as the numerous burials discovered in the last century seem to testify. The trade of the Celtic peoples of the tribe of Leuques, then Rauraques and Séquanes are attested by currencies and rural installations, the Roman legions would have set up a camp at the entrance of the village. Later, the Gallo-Romans developed the culture of the vine probably on the flats or near the habitats. The Roman presence on the spot is attested by a tile discovered in 1900 at the foot of the Schlossberg hill, bearing the mention Prima Legio Martia, a battalion of legionnaires led by the Emperor Diocletian (284-305).

C est une magnifique ville d Alsace ou il fait bon vivre...c est une petite ville où j allais y séjourner des week-end avec des amies...que de bons souvenirs...merci pour ces belles images.
I love the stone-paved roads. The medieval vibes are very good. My thoughts go to how the people lived their lives in those days.Thank you for the nice walk tour. I would get lost if I walked around by myself.😅

кукольная деревня, в которой похоже никто не живёт, кроме персонала обслуживающего туристов, не видно ни детей, ни домашних животных, музей под открытым небом... декорации, очень напоминающие театрально-сценические, но стоит отметить, очень даже неплохие, цветочки, зелень и всевозможные украшения...волнуют воображение многовековые ухоженные и отреставрированные строения, как там у А.С.Пушкина "...преданья старины глубокой..."

Vous avez raison : il y a en France de nombreux villages (j'en connais beaucoup en Provence) qui ne sont que des scènes de théâtre pour les touristes et qui sont quasi inhabités en hiver, l'exode rural explique cela.

Au dernier recencement de 2019, on dénombre 1721 habitants. En 2022, 95 enfants à l'école primaire ( 6-11 ans), 42 à l'école maternelle ( avant 6 ans).

Dieser Dorf(kleine Stadt) wurde von den Deutschen gebaut und nicht von den Franzosen. In Deutschland gibt es sehr viele solche Dörfer. Das ist Deutsche Kultur. Alles sieht wunderschön aus und wie in einem Märchen. 🤗

In the course, the French troups left scorched earth in Germany from Ulm in the south to Koblenz in the north, killing thousands. The region was Germany's richest province. Now it is part of France, but as I already said, by violence. There is no talking around or denying this fact. And I repeat myself one more time: The language of the locals, the names of the villages, the architecture - all are German. Honour to whom honour is due! P.S. The "Eguisheim" spelling in French is only due to French speakers negligence of correct pronounciation. The correct name i s Egisheim. Another example "Selestadt" = correctly Schlettstadt, or "Riquewihr" = correctly Reichenweiher and so on.

It was German speaking and part of the German world until the French King annexed it, since then it was fought over and since WW2 was reannexed to France.

Alsace belonged to the German-speaking area or to Germany for more than 1000 years. Thus, the village is not the most beautiful village in France but the most beautiful German village now belonging to France.
