Egremont Castle

Egremont Castle in West Cumbria dates back to Norman times with evidence found showing that the site has been occupied since around 990AD! It was besieged by the Scots, took part in a treasonous plot to install Mary Queen of Scots on the English throne and has been a ruin since the 1500's yet plenty of it remains to be seen. Join me for a look around this interesting historic Castle sited in the heart of the town of Egremont.

I came across your video after doing a little research into my family history. I just got married and I was trying to figure out how to change my last name, which turned into looking up both of our surname histories. My last maiden-name is Luce which is a derivative of Lucy. Richard de Lucy is a predecessor of mine which led me to Egremont Castle. Your lovely poem at the beginning reminded me of my ox horn that I got from a Renaissance fair a couple decades ago and that I'm the only one who knows the trick to blow it, so I immediately retrieved it and gave it a few blasts while I danced around, driving my dog crazy 😂 thank you for the laugh and amazing history lesson.

I grew up in egremont and the hole which is now covered with the metal was a dungeon. It had metal bars going across and a gate to get in and walk down using holes inside the wall, we used to play there all the time growing up and sometimes went down there. Prob decided to cover it incase someone got trapped down there. Great video brought back good memories

They’re getting even better Paul. I see you’re adding aerial shots, historical music all professional shot as usual, very informative and good publicity for the West Cumbrian area. First class.

From what i was told from Wyndham school by my history teacher Joan Sandiford , Egremont was named after the French invaded us and named it in comparison to Aigremont, Yvelines . South of France i think

The Ditch was actually the water Moat around the Castle and apparently according to ancient history in the town , there was a tunnel from Egremont Castle to St Bees .Entrance is the Concrete slab on the mound facing where the cinema house used to be

From Egremont Town Council. “Egremont town’s history dates back to the bronze age but was small village for centuries but when the Danes established northern kingdoms in the 10th century they built a fort where the castle stands today. in the 12th century, after the Norman conquest the area of Copeland (or Kaupland from norse meaning bought land) was given by royal decree to Rufus de Meschines, who later bequeathed the area to his brother William de Meschines.” The town dates from the Bronze Age, the fort/ castle 10th Century. Thanks for watching.
