    Good video. For best life, minimize time at zero charge and 100% charge. After using my ego batteries I charge them to 30-60%. This is optimal for storage life. When I am going to use them, I charge to full before hand. If I run at battery to zero, then I put it on the charger right away. I do have ego's fast charger, which makes this easy.

    The large vents by the connectors is where the fan from the charger blows fresh air to cool off the battery. The excess heat leaves through the smaller vents on top of the battery. Heat can't leave through the large vents while in use because it'd be completely covered by the tool. The reason why EGO chargers charge so fast is because it rapidly heats up the cells, similar to how an electric vehicle preheats the battery for fast charging. You also forgot to mention that using the slower charger is better for battery longevity. Less contact with heat, the healthier it will be. I figured I'd point this out as your video has two fast chargers in the background.

    "using the slower charger is better for battery longevity" A fact that not enough people are aware of and it disappoints me that there isn't a switch on either the battery or charger to slow the charging down to a trickle, for example, if I know it's going to snow overnight, I'd like to charge slow enough to be fully charged by morning, I'd also like to be able to *not* fully charge if I know I won't need full batteries. Oh well, EGO has features they can work on for the future.

    I have had major issues with my EGO latest generation batteries. Three separate battery failures within a year, including the warranty replacement battery. All of the failures are with the latest gen batteries with the 'fuel gauge'. I haven't had an issue at all with my earlier gen battery. My lovely local hardware story said quite a few have returned batteries with the same or similar issues to me - the battery flashes red and won't run, even if its charge is good/full. Thankfully, my local hardware store replaced my faulty batteries out of their own stock (earlier gen batteries, more reliable) as EGO was very slow to respond to warranty requests in Australia. I plan to sell my EGO chainsaw, line trimmer and mower as I am to stressed over the failures. I only use my gear maybe twice a week, so this is just not acceptable. I love the equipment (just amazing stuff) but what is the use of good equipment if the batteries keep failing. EGO knows that this is an issue as they apparently have replaced the internal cells with a different brand and there have been many issues...

    I have only been using my new 10AH EGO mower for a few weeks, but I have a lot of time with lipo batteries. I like to make sure not to discharge them too much, so I googled cell voltage vs charge %, and general consensus seemed to be 3.6V was close to dead. I know they use 14 cells to get to 56 nominal, so 51 V would be borderline safe in my book. So, I used a few short lengths of wire to stick down in the main + and - terminals on the battery, checked voltage with a volt meter, after running it down to 2 bars, and it was only 50V! Not sure what to think, but I am planning to never let it get below 2 bars before I recharge. It did run over an hour over some medium high grass, so I am still happy with the cut time, but I think their battery gauge needs some work...

    3.6 V is nominal for most NMC batteries (50%SOC). Lower cutoff voltage can be in the range of 2.5-3.0 V, but I don't know the value for ego's cells.

    I have a four-year-old leaf-blower that I have barely used. I just went to use it and it turned on for less than a minute. The battery button (large one) was flashing red. I couldn't find the manual so I placed it in the battery charger. The small green light was solid green and the large button stayed red for a couple of seconds then turned off. I assumed the battery must have retained its charge so put it back on the blower. This time, it wouldn't turn on and the large button was flashing red all the time that I was depressing the actual blower buttons. I tried taking the battery off and replacing it but it only kept flashing red. It was engaged properly. Any idea what might be wrong with it?

    Thanks for the battery review! I'm new to the EGO products, but just bought an used EGO lawnmower with an older 7.5 AH battery (no charge gauge), a new trimmer with a 4 AH battery and a new 2 stage snowblower with 2 new 7.5 AH batteries. You mentioned not letting batteries drain all the way before charging and I have been reading the same thing. I have also read it is best to NOT charge them to 100%. Don't remember you mentioning that. Also....have read that it is best to charge them with a slower charger vs the rapid charger (overheats the batteries a bit and that reduces their life). Any thoughts? Thanks again! Good stuff!

  • @Rickmakes

    @Rickmakes

    The rapid charger isn't super fast and it cools the batteries so I don't think there is a degradation issue with using it. It is best not to over charge them but charging them until completion using the EGO charger should be fine as the charge controller will prevent overcharging.

    Are you saying that it is bad for the battery to use the tool until the battery is depleted? Yet, you said (at 2:24) "So, I use the battery until it's depleted, I'll bring it down here (your basement), I'll leave it to cool off, then I'll stick it on the charger." What I'm wondering is this: Should I stop using the tool and change the battery when the battery is simply getting low - but not completely depleted? Also, is it OK to leave the battery on the charger when the battery is basically in storage - in the winter, for instance, when I typically do not need many of these tools? You mentioned something about "storage mode."

  • @Rickmakes

    @Rickmakes

    2 жыл бұрын

    It is bad to completely deplete a lithium battery. Thankfully, pretty much all lithium batteries or systems have circuitry to turn off the battery when the charge gets low. As such, when the battery quits working, it still technically has charge in it. It just isn't accessible to the user in order to prevent complete discharge. Lithium batteries will also self discharge over time so you wouldn't want to leave it in this low charge state for an extended period (i.e. weeks or months). It could self discharge to a point of ruining the battery. I think it is probably technically okay to leave the battery on the charger all winter but most people would recommend against it. You never know when something bad (like a power surge) is going to cause problems. It supposedly self discharges to 50% after a month. I use mine in my snowblower but if I didn't, I'd throw it on the charger once or twice over the winter season.

Leave it in maintenance mode or manually charge it - if so how often?

  • @Rickmakes

    @Rickmakes

    11 ай бұрын

    You want to remove it from the charger when it is finished charging. I'm guessing it probably wouldn't cause harm if you didn't remove it immediately. I'll usually remove it within 24 hours of putting it on the charger. I usually use mine in my blower over the winter but it probably wouldn't hurt to charge it once or twice in the off season.

    It is hard for me to judge exactly. I can still usually mow my entire lawn on one charge. An exception to this is when the lawn is very long and or wet. In that case, I sometimes have to finish using one of my snowblower batteries. That was occasionally the case when it was new though. I am guessing that the batteries don't have the same run time as when they were new but they are still meeting my needs.

  • @Rickmakes

    You can charge it right away. The old NiCad rechargeable batteries people used to use had a memory so you needed to deplete them completely before recharging. Lithium don't have a memory like that. You can recharge them any time you like. Lithium batteries can be ruined if you deplete them completely. The battery has circuitry to shut off power before it hits 0%. The problem is if you run them until they shut off and store them for an extended period. They can self discharge to the point of ruining themselves. You always want to make sure there is a decent amount of charge in them when storing.

  • @nikshill8767

    very good tips. can i ask a for a clarification Rick. At minute 2:26 you say you use the battery until depleted but then a few seconds later (2:30) you say that one of the things that kills batteries is that they drain to low. is there a difference between "using to depletion" & "drain to low". what does "drain to low" mean? other than that ---- ACES. I love the EGO - I have a few acres and cut paths thru the tall grass --- my trimmer is a BEAST. I heard recently that Home Depot contract with EGO expired and they are focussing on Ryobi. Lowes picked up the contract. Ryobi --- i think they are kiddie devices.

  • @Rickmakes

    @Rickmakes

    3 жыл бұрын

    I guess that sounds contrary. 🤔 Good catch! Any decent system that uses lithium batteries will have protection circuitry to kill power before it is at 0%. The battery is "depleted" for all intents and purposes but it will still have some charge left in it. If you were to leave it for a long time in this state, it could self discharge to a level that could harm the battery. This is why you don't want to store lithium batteries discharged.

    You can charge it up all of the way but it will go into storage mode after 1 month by automatically partially discharging. It will continue to self-discharge (which is the nature of lithium batteries). I'm not sure how long you could store it without damage. You might contact EGO for that information and be sure to include which battery you have.

    @@Rickmakes I agree. I've had the 52 cm mower and edge trimmer since 2019 with 7.5 Ah and 2.5 Ah batteries. I also have a newer chainsaw, hedge trimmer and brush cutter with 2.5 Ah batteries. This year I bought a 5 Ah battery. The 7.5 Ah does the mowing and we have a hectare of land here in France, not all of it mowed but all our EGO kit works really hard. This year the 7.5 Ah battery would only do 2 minutes of work. I phoned the help line which is in Canada but was advised to buy a new battery!!....I know full well that inside the packs are 18650 Tesla-type cells which could be replaced so I asked them if they do a refurbishment service or knew any company who did...No, 'just buy a new battery'..I told them they needed to up their game and think about the ecological impact of their products. By accident I put the 7.5 Ah on the EGO slow charger (we have the fast one and a slow one) and left it there for a few hours after charging. When I tried it again it gave me 20 minutes of use which is an improvement. Apparently the BMS needs to 'top balance' the voltage on the cells and by leaving it plugged in on the charger this is what happened. I've had an electric car since 2019 (Kia e-Niro) and have suffered no range loss at all in 103,000 km. Kia recommend to charge the car to 100% once every month to six weeks even if not needed. This gives the BMS a chance to look at the V max on the cells, spot any weak ones and lift the voltage slightly on the others. From new there is always some 'headroom' on the cell voltages to allow for this. I am guessing this is what is happening with my EGO batteries.

So when I put the batteries all back on their chargers after use, and while they’re still hot/warm, I set a timer to turn on the smart plug after about an hour or so. I have a set of HomeKit plugs that I can control from my phone. I charge my batteries to about 50% after they've cooled off, then put them on the unpowered charger. I generally have a several hours heads up that I'm going to be using them, so I can just turn on the charger from the house. I'll be using this method for my Ego batteries for my new snow blower this winter. I have Skill devices for my lawn because they were a lot cheaper. They don't have the auto-discharge feature, but I've discharged both to about 50%, placed them into plastic zip-top bags with several desiccant packets, and placed them in the crisper area of the garage fridge (the drawer is removed) for winter storage. Storing at about 5 °C (40 °F) should also improve longevity. For the Ego cells, I'm going to charge up most of the way, then wait the month until they have self-discharged before doing the same thing over the summer. As long as there's 0 risk of freezing, AND they are stored dry, the batteries will be around longer if stored cool.
