I met Efren at a pool hall I used to go to. He played a lot of people. They lined up to play him. He gave them the break too. I broke...made 1 ball in. Made another ball in..missed the shot on the next one. Whelp.....that was it. I never got back to the table :) He's an awesome guy. Was a privilege to play with such an amazing player.

I met Efren in 1985 @ Slick Willie’s in Houston right after he came to US. In a pool hall like Willie’s, the regulars all knew each other and each other’s game. He was an unknown skinny kid with an unbelievable game beating everyone up the latter (myself included). I remember Buddy Hall and Earl coming to town and we all watched live in amazement at some of those high stakes matches. 35 yrs later I’m still captivated by “the skinny kid from the Philippines”.

Guess this is your claim to fame, congratulations...

He won 4 World 8-ball Championships (1995, 1996, 2000, 2004). The announcer only mentioned 2. He also was a 5-time All-around Champion (Master of the Table). At this point, he has 3 and this time he will win his fourth. He has 13 individual titles over all disciplines in this tournament.

@Jeffery Skelly straight pool died off in the 80's and is nothing compared to one pocket. Efren is the GOAT at one pocket, 8-ball, arguably 9-ball, and was a hell of a 3-cushion player. Anyone who knows pool knows Efren is the greatest pool player of all time.

I refereed Efren at the world 9 ball championships for a couple of years in Cardiff with match room sports... Him and lots of the other high profile talent...its unreal the skill many of them have, really enjoyed it.

Mr. Efren Reyes is beyond Gifted on a Pool Table , His Control of the cue ball is amazing .

I was playing pool in the 90's in Las Vegas when Efren came into the pool hall to practice for an upcoming tournament. After playing next to him for a few minutes he asked if I was interested in selling my cue. I said sure and offered to let him try it out. We never made a deal but it was cool to own a stick that was "used" by a legend.

Señor Reyes is freakin awesome. He makes shots I couldn't even dream of making.

I was lucky enough to see Efren play a few times in person. At the time NOBODY thought ANYONE on the planet could walk into Allen Hopkins own room and beat him in one pocket. Efren did things none of us had ever seen before. An amazing player and a very nice guy/gentleman on top of it. The best 9 ball player I've ever seen.

Reyes is so cool isn't he? He's like; _"Yeah, I'm the boss. So what?"_ Ice cold, Pool genius.

Amazing shot making, cueball control, emotional control, hardly ever changes expression, no smugness, strutting, or arrogance as he calmly and efficiently annihilates his opponent.

Krusty Kraken If you're talking about the kick shot at the 7, yes. It was an accident. He was trying to make it in the top left corner...it went an additional 2 rails and THEN off of the Q ball, then into the side. There's no way he meant to do that, especially when it was more logical and easier to just kick the Q ball one rail and make the 7 into the top left corner. What made that a difficult shot was the English he had to put on the Q ball to even get it to hit the 7 from that angle. He hit it. But, he didn't make it in the intended pocket.

Yeah that was a vicious shot. One thing most people DON'T wanna do is get into a safety game with him. He wins most of the time because of his cue ball control and the fact that he is the best kicker on the planet.

The shot Efrain has to make on the 3-ball (starting around 22:52) is worth watching the entire video for. From an inch off the right rail just this side of the near rail, shooting at the 3 which is at the left rail about halfway between the side pocket and the far corner, he chooses to bank the cue off the near rail, just missing the 4-ball to hit the 3-ball bouncing it off the left rail, the far rail, and the right rail into the left side pocket. He kept "The Ice Man" on ice.

Tell me about it. When they were chastising Immonen for not going for the shot jumping off the side rail in rack 3, the shot wasn't even on as Immonen would have been hitting the knuckle of the pocket!! Pretty much every American commentator (no offence) is clueless when it comes to 9ball. The only ones I really could say are decent are Jeremy Jones and Mark Wilson. These two are not as bad as Jay Helvert and Jerry Forsythe though (probably not spelled their names correctly)

The Magician! Efren "Bata" Reyes. My very first encounter with this gracious man was watching him win the 1999 World Pool Championship. I recall how during that time, and every tournament after, he kept the commentators at their toes. He schooled them whichever way they could take it by making spectacular shots that left them gasping for air. Those who went on air, and having regarded themselves as pros soon realized they were witnessing greatness before them. I always got a kick out of how he kept them guessing and how quick he shut them down every time they thought he didn't have a shot only to make a complete ass out of them magical shot after magical shot.

My dad saw Mosconi pocket 526 consecutive balls in a game in Ohio in the 50's. Willie never missed. He quit because he was "tired". He and Fats were great at trick shots as well, so I'm not sure one can unequivocally say that Efren Reyes is the greatest that ever played.

beerus saitams Mosconi played a long time ago, a master for over half a century of play. His record of pocketing 526 balls has been broken recently by a dude who focused all his efforts on it, but reports fail to mention that Mosconi quit at 526 because he “was tired” he may well have gone longer (600, 700?). But I agree, Efren may well be the most versatile player ever though.

As a kid in LA, I had a reputation for being an exceptionally good pool player. I'll never forget the time that I was challenged to a game by a professional Vegas pool sharp. I was so neverous of losing that I tried extra hard to win. I won the flip for the break, and amazingly I made the eight ball on the break three times in a row! In the fourth game I ran the table on him. Upon seeing this, the guy quit on me, and calmly put his custom cue stick back in its' case, and quit without saying a word. I don't think that he could believe what had just happened. I couldn't either. I never could do it again!

Reyes has a compact playing style, always in control. Perfect playing posture on every single shot. You never see him jump up after a shot.

Shot of the match at 23:15. Only the Magician, Eferan Reyes (and maybe a very few select others in history) could make a shot like that, on purpose, in tournament play. Awesome shot by an extremely talented player.

Yep he's one of the best position players to ever pick up a cue. The finesse that guy has is nothing short of amazing. What I've noticed after watching hundreds of his games is that he may leave himself tough on a lot of shots, but one ........ the money ball. Almost every time he positions for the 9 or 8 ball he almost always is within a foot or so and fairly straight in.

When playing with Efren, make sure you have a comfortable chair for you’ll be sitting most of the time!

I've seen some great players over the years but none as amazing as Efren.. He's a genius.!!

When you play against Efren and watch him make one brilliant shot after another surely you must be thinking of another line of work.

efren is a machine... so much props for his work ethic and knowledge of billiards... the g.o.a.t.!

I love watching him play. I first saw him in a movie with Fernando Poe Jr but wasn’t that interested in watching him play because I was still working full time. Now, I watch him play every day. At my age I shouldn’t but I do. I am now 84 yrs old but I keep watching his games win or lose. I love watching him play with Mr. Strickland.

I think reyes is secretly a time travelling pool wizard who has just perfected all techniques of pool and just toys with the competition when he feels like getting their hopes up

I can empathise with Mika, I played 2 games against Efren at Resorts world in Manila. He was there for their opening night. I broke the first game and Efren cleared the table, he broke the second game and cleared the table. Haha, it was the most fun I've ever had losing. The mans a genius :)

Reyes seems so cool. Even when he goofs his demeanor is chill.

Efren's cue ball control is impeccable! This man is as smooth as they come on the felt! simply the best player in the world! would love to play a race against him! would be an honor. :)

Reyes was on a completely different level from a shot imagination, precision control of the cue ball, and execution standpoint. He can see tough shots in his mind that nobody else can even think of. Only limited by his own imagination really. Super soft touch walking the cue ball around the table. Not a banger type, precise and very deliberate. I’m sure he’s seeing the shots he wants multiple shots down the line from the moment he steps up to the table. Not a shot he can’t make really and I’ll bet he’s invented a whole bunch. Pretty incredible player, all time great hall of farmer for sure

Then scary part about Reyes is when we saw him on TV in the 90s but hes prime was really in the 80s when he was hustlin in the pool halls… how scary good was that?

"iMO should know this shot" That is modesty? iMO knows, but choose to masse because it's the correct choice Commentators were wrong time and time again in this match, especially in the beginning. Didn't watch the rest because pool is boring

23:10 You might think this is luck, but watch before he took the shot at 23:00 . He was already measuring where the cue ball goes and the trajectory of the object ball with his stick. At first I thought this was a fluke, but after watching Efren so many times, you get an idea already when there's a big shot coming when he throws in his stick on the table and do some sort of calculations. Amazing legend!!!! And one more thing, if he really wanted to hit the rail and try to pocket that 3 ball at the corner, I don't think he would have added that much power. That power was intentional so it has enough speed to hit the object ball 3 rails and then bank it in the middle pocket and plus the control of the cue ball of where Efren wants as was shown on 23:05 , is insane!!!

Also, he did not take his eyes off of that 3 ball. He watched it all the way to the pocket. He raised his cue in celebration the moment the 3 ball bounced off the side rail.

Efren Bata Reyes never relies on luck to win. Those amazing, physics defying shots which leave spectators gaping in disbelief are not products of luck. Luck after all to Efren is 99 percent perspiration and 1 percent inspiration.

From 67/73 served USMC and after the Vietnam war wheal serving in Great Lakes Ill I start playing Pool aka billiards, was becoming quite good and only way to get off the table was to let someone bet me or just leave. Miss the good old days for sure.

I’ll replace my 5 yo son’s bed with a pool table so he’ll be like the magician someday ...

Imagine the pressure of playing against Efren... You know that if you miss a shot, that may be the end. In this match to 7, Efren had 1 miss, 3 safes, and 1 push. Incredible. Greatest player ever, barr none.

One thing that Makes Eften Reyes the magician, if the certain ball is covered and there's no possible opening to hit that ball, most of pool player will go either use jump shot or masse, on the otherhand Efren Reyes most of times he would not do those kind of shots, even he can, he prefer and like to hit the rail 3, 4, and sometimes 5 times just to hit the certain ball, and amazingly it will go success. Efren Reyes likes dufficult shots, he does trick shots during crucial games, championship, and he succeeded.

To me, chess and pool is a lot alike. There's a lot of times one move or one hard shot, usually a bank shot, if you make it it sets up the whole game. Make the shot and then run the table.

One simple name: Walter Lindrum. Efren is a fantastic player as well as a really nice guy, but to call him the greatest billiard player of all time is flat out absurd, incorrect, and somewhat offensive.

Well the statement as it was said, and that is what I was putting my two cents in about and not at all what you said, which I will get to, was that Efren Reyes was the greatest billiard player of all time. Clearly, and irrefutably incorrect, as evidenced by historical facts. Now, to what you said..... Best tournament player? Well that's some arguable territory right there too, I guess that a concensus would have to be agreed upon as to the criteria making up of that claim, everything ranging from money won and amount of titles, numbers of countries, and then how would you rate up era as well as discipline (s) difference being weighed, who could really be the fair judge of all that? Only God himself, and that's why this argument is so pointless. It's impossible for any one person to be able to honestly say who the best was, only who they think, and for whatever reasoning there might be to back up their personal decision based on potentially biased personal opinion. I believe Walter Lindrum was the best billiard player the world has ever seen or will ever see again, and that statement is backed up by quite a staggering amount of historical facts, but I am man enough to admit that I may actually be wrong, and if there is anyone else who is remotely considerable to be claimed to be better, then I would LOVE to see the evidence to back that up.

I knew him as a kid and efren lived and slept and dreamed of the game every day such dedication and im not joking sometimes he would play for days ( no wonder he is a champion )

I worked at "Scientific Games" in Las Vegas, a slot machine company, and we had a pool table, foosball table, pinball machines and a ping pong table in our break room, and before I started working there, I hadn't played pool in a couple years. My neighbor taught me how to play and I knew I started getting good when I started beating him. After playing at work everyday on break, I got my game back and I realized, at least for me, I have to keep playing to stay fresh and I was beating some of the better players that worked there also. Some of the guys were surprised because they didn't even know I could play because I never bragged about being good. I could've hustled a few people.

I've had plenty of days like both Efren and Mika here, sometimes you can't miss and you run everything out without even hardly thinking about it, and some days each time you get to the table you're hooked and have nothing, or you finally get to the table and dog some easy shot. That's just pool.

dude, even professionals miss. and sorry to say just bc you can throw a couple names out there doesn't make it true. i find it hard to believe your outlandish story, unless your ready to fork over a picture or something i think you're talking out of your ass. and as for missing easy shots, believe me everyone has those days, you're not a perfect pool player and if you want I'll go ahead and run a couple races with you and give you the 7 out

Being in ''dead stroke'' for a day has happened to a lot of people who've spent time playing/practicing pool. That's a given. Winning games when you're on a bad day is what separates you and Reyes. Another thing is that Efren has a vast knowledge on ball behaviour as he is also a great carom player. He has an unmatched arsenal of offensive and defensive shots and is widely regarded to have elevated the game. Has he missed easy shots? Sure, everyone does, but the crucial moment is what you do afterwards. Do you miss another and collapse under sheer pressure, or get yourself up and make a comeback? Do you get angry or focused? That's what most people don't understand about this guy. He has the best mentality for the game than anyone ever. And that's what made everything else possible...

Watching it all over again. It is still, wow wow!

Reyes skills resulted from 1) learning billiards and reliance on rails; and 2) playing from early age. Children absorb things wholly, whereas adults cerebralize things. A joy to watch
