Effective Teaching Strategies to Handle Loud Students

I've come across a few effective teaching strategies that have helped me handle my loud students.
Most of the time, teachers really need to get our classroom quiet. These classroom management strategies were used in my own classroom as a first year teacher, and they worked with my students!
These behavior management strategies (especially transition songs) can help your students engage in being well behaved.
Go ahead and practice these classroom management ideas and tips in your own classroom! :)

Please, Maya, give us more examples of "consequences" to help with this negociation. I suck at being harsh with them and warnings are not really enough anymore. I always use timers and they keep talking while they should be doing an activity. I LOVED that one about having them in silence for a minute.

  • @el90skid32

It is not harsh, it is discipline, if you don’t got discipline, you are not a good teacher. If you are letting kids get away with no consequences because you feel sorry for them, then you are actually hurting them, instead of helping them; in addition, they continue doing the negative actions, thinking it is ok to do so since a consequence was never implemented. There is a consequence to everything in life, kids must learn that at a young age, it just depends on what kind of teacher you are; for example, for me it is important to transmit to the students the first day of class, that Respect is important in the classroom and I would not tolerate any disrespect, you got to be clear of your expectations with your students the very first day of class, or else everything goes downhill 😝. For your consequences, you got to be careful not to use 5th grade consequences on a 1st grader, you are the educator, we must think on how to wisely teach kids between right and wrong. If you are a person with no moral convictions and do not believe in consequences, you are going to have a hard time helping kids, I have seen many teachers that simply do not care about dealing with incidents that require humanitarian understanding, they simply ignore those issues and at times, kids are left with no consequences, thinking he/she can do it again and get away with it. It takes another compassionate human being to help another, so one must take off the teacher hat and step into our students’ shoes to be able to understand them. I am a male elementary educator and I have notice how kids respond differently to male teachers. I believe both approaches, female and male, are important in schools; kids respond differently to a male at times, father figures are important for kids. I have seen classrooms that are loud, and when another female teacher calls me to go talk to her students, they all go silence when I walk in the room lol. I guess some kids get the feeling like I am their “Dad” or something 😝, they are familiar with that environment at home. Yes, sociologically speaking, environment is key in a child’s life, especially those with no mother or father, so it is important for staff to work as a team and think about what it is best for the child, not to prove one is a hero. WE CANNOT WIN ALL THE BATTLES or RESOLVE all of our students’ issues at times, it will take another adult to help you; unfortunately, that is the problem with many teachers today, they do not want to accept any help whatsoever from other educators when it comes to discipline. I tell them in a calm voice to please listen to their teacher and they do Lol. You got to be smart and think of your approach with children, not yell or stress yourself out, that’s the last thing you want to do, to loose your patience; thus, once you do, you have lost the game buddy! 😝

I’ve taught K-5 and here are some I’ve found to be helpful. K-1: Be careful taking things away or isolating. It tends to just cause more harm than good. One thing I do is I have a corner that has a redirection activity, but not toys or fidgets. They need to understand this isn’t a play area (otherwise they will WANT to go there). One activity I have is a bowl with about 20 clothespins. They pin each one around the bowl and when they are done (and the bowl is empty) they can rejoin us. Another one I do for all grades - and this is specific to line walking usually - I give “private lessons” and those lessons always come out of recess or free time. I don’t tell them that it’s a punishment. I say, “I notice I have some friends who could really use some line walking lessons. Fortunately for you, I give private lessons! Sadly though, the only time I have for these lessons is during recess or free time.” I never only do one kid, I always take at least 2-3 and sometimes I’ll even ask for a volunteer that IS a good line walker to support the other kid in the lesson. It’s usually no more than 5 min. Believe me, they will NOT want to do it again. 😅 when they are acting up in line (you could use this in other areas as well) I say, “show me you don’t need more line walking lessons!” For older kids, taking things away is more effective. Maybe they go to recess 5 min late (I usually have them do an activity like help me clean up the classroom). For 3-5 grade I do something similar to Mayas post it note idea. I write one line for everyone they aren’t listening or are acting up and each line represents one min or their recess or free time that they owe me. I try to give out more rewards than consequences but I think there needs to be a healthy balance of both.

I use the NOISE method too and its works great. I use it only during independent work bc I feel they need to talk at some point during the day and we can't have students be quiet all day. However, if they get too loud or aren't doing their work I take a letter away and when they hit the word NO then there is no talking at all.

@Ava Khoshab I have been teaching elementary for over 12 years. As a teacher, you try different management/behavior techniques to see what does and doesn't work with your students. I taught first grade for 4 years and the NOISE method was one technique I used it and it did help and I never had a student get mad. If you have other suggestions instead of the NOISE method please let me know because I would love to try them.

A great tip is to teach students is what activie listening is. Use a Y chart and in groups they could discuss what active listening looks, sounds and feels like. I then teach them the cue "show me your listening." I explain that this is my big signal to tune into either instructions or something important that requires quiet thinking. Initially students will have to be cued in, for example "James show me you are actively listening by sitting up and facing me please" or Jacinta all things out of hands please so that I know you are actively listening. Be respectful and nurturing and they will naturally want to please you with good manners. Honestly after a while. They fold like a deck of cards each time. I simply cue with "Showme you are listening". Mix it up with the other strategies.

I teach college, and we have the same issues. I have used the proximity method for 15 years, and it’s awesome! If it doesn’t work, putting my hand flat on that desk while continuing to lecture gets their attention. Another one I use in serious cases is to shut the lights off. There are many more approaches as well, but another worth mentioning is announcing that we will be doing student presentations that day. That works fast!

Love the timer strategy. An attention grabber I do that also stops the class is’hands on top. That means stop’ . I say hands on top, and I put my hands on my head then the children say that means stop and they also put both hands on their heads. Great particulars when using the computer or tablet and you need theirfull attention. If they still have hands on the computer or even one hand. Then it’s a three minute time out.

I like to think of myself of the annoying popular ish girl I try to be quite but my class is LOUD (sorry if any of my class mates are reading this) I must say I am noisy but I’m trying to be more quite so I make a good impression for when I’m older, or in other grades because if you start off as a trouble maker you stay one till the end of the year until there is a long break because of the corona virus so I can kinda start clean or at least not a trouble maker. Some of my teachers either right down a quarter of our names if we are loud and if we get to our full name we have to stay in the next lunch recess. Another one is that my teacher put on some quite music/ calming music and if our class is louder than the music the teacher tells us. We also used to have a rain stick so if we are loud the teacher just flips it and tells us to be quite. Lastly, after lunch recess to calm us down we do about 15 or a 20 minute meditation session to calm us down after running around outside. When the pandemic is over and if you try these please tell me how they went. Also thank you so much for this video I got some new ideas 😁😄

My grade1 Classroom was a mess they be playing around class and when i said open textbook some of them said they dont bring but they lied I dont know am i being too nice for them?I once shouted at this one kid for breaking the class window when they played bottles in the class and he go silent as he know he did wrong.Theyre so chaotic when theres me in class How can i make them scared of me 😢It really differs when im teaching grade 4/5 cus theyre older and maybe theyre big enough to understand me u know when i raised my voice they all went silent. But the grade1 kids huh...One time i just ignored the loud kids and not talking too much to them cuz if i talk to them they will act demanding like saying they dont want to do work cuz they wanna play and stuff

Hello! Love this video on some great teaching strategies. I’m an educator based in MN and would love to connect with you. I would also love to chat and share with you some of the strategies I’ve used in my 6 years of teaching that could be of benefit to you if you’re ever interested in connecting! As a Hmong woman, I love seeing other Asian American women thrive in this field. Your videos are super addicting and I can’t wait to see more of your content :) from one educator to another, best of luck in this new school year! Maizong Thao

While i was in middle school and now in high school, my classmates werent always THAT loud but teachers love to bang the table loud or holler and scream at us and have an aggresive tedtalk about violating the school’s reputation and how our behaviors are graded and of course nobody can talk back and they even defend the more terrifying teachers, a super strict teacher whos useless at teaching algebra and forces out answers from us through fear and they didnt fire the pedo teacher too i was terrified of teachers but now it gets fcking annoying that ive been trying to convince my family to let me transfer to any school at all :( but i still have to spend more of my hs years in the same school
