This is the first video from you I've watched. I have to say, nothing short of absolutely impressive This philosophy of info > anchor > scaffolding is just so neat and the gold quality I wanted to find on yt. Thank you for the advice, I will keep this one close to me and maybe, even try applying it to map out the zhongruan (not a guitar, but still has fretboard). It will be an interesting exercise to say the least - fellow string musician

If anyone has only happened on to this channel by chance today, by viewing this lesson--and--you are looking for ways to really deepen your knowledge of music and how that all applies to the guitar, you may have just stumbled across one of the most significant teachers you will meet/find. If you are in a rush, or just casually cruising or browsing...do yourself a favor and just bookmark this lesson or the channel and come back when you have time. I'm not sure I can even explain how radically different the teaching here is and do it justice. It's nothing to do with someone that is somehow be able to magically regurgitate the same information in a way that you will understand so much as....what you've found here is the guitar study equivalent of "give a man a fish, eat for a day....teach a man to fish....". yeah. I can't explain it in words. But, bookmark, save the lesson or channel and come back when you have the time....because I do know that is an important factor. If you are ready to do some work...this could be one of those milestone moments, your playing before and after you started doing this work sorta-thing....

I believe the more you practice this method the better your ear gets . You can better hear other guy’s guitar playing . Play this video 3 times and then listen to the SAME music you love and you’ll HEAR so much more. Chris, you are an inspiring , unselfish super guitar player. I’m gonna use this every day. Great lesson, Chris! The octaves exercise was one of the best exercises I ever learned for navigating the fretboard, as you say, it's the scaffolding that then helps you reach new areas where you can apply your new scale pattern or your new lick :)

I find that as I accumulate knowledge, my ability improves incrementally. When I gain those pieces of knowledge that occasionally connect two other pieces of knowledge, that is when I make a big jump (or a bigger jump :) )

Describing the parts of the fretboard that are unfamilar as uncharted waters with sea monster hit home for me (partially cause ive been playing valheim way more than ive been practicing music for the past few weeks )

Man you hit the mail on the head. Just last night I was playing the Am pentatonic scale. I know all five positions and was practicing putting them together. My issue is making it sound musical. I know all the notes but just playing them doesn’t always sound good.

You bet, Jason! This method used on any piece of info, will start to really stitch it all together for you.

Great video man. It’s almost impossible for me to remember scales and modes if I don’t know the formula. If I know there’s a half step between 3,4/7,1, I’ll remember that forever. Dorian, half step between 2,3/ 6,7. I’ve always been terrible at relying on shapes haha. I don’t know, I just can’t remember shapes for some reason but can remember formulas no problem. It’s weird.

Everyone gets this stuff in a different way, the interval method is GREAT!!!!

Currently I hit notes first and then figure out what it sounds like. I want to get to knowing what note I want and then just hit that note. I want to get to that point. I think this helps so thank you.

My brother-in-law has the LP Special with P90s too. That was one of the motivations to get the SG. So far I love it. Might be the best-playing neck in the whole bunch! I’m getting some Seymour Duncans this week to try out as the pick ups are good, but don’t seem to have quite the dynamic range that I feel they should. And the nut needs a little detailed filing as the G string is a bit squirrelly, tuning-wise.

It's still an excellent guitar but I'm thinking MFDs are actually the best single coil pickups. Good luck with the Seymours, I have some SD Seth Lovers in another, amazing pickups. Lollar p90s are also outstanding

I take slightly longer (milliseconds) to think of note names between 7th and 11th frets on the D to B strings. Weird eh?
