    I don't know what the context of this point is, but... 1. We don't know the rate of twins in alien species. 2. We don't know that many barely-fleshed-out characters don't have twins. 3. The twin rate is much closer to IRL if we only consider important on-screen characters or main characters.

    There might be another layer to the idea of "These people don't care about star wars and are just using the IP to prop up their resume or tell their own story" What if these stories those people make in Star Wars are lackluster because they're saving any original ideas they might have for future projects that they will actaully have control over. In the trucking industry there's this idea that sometimes companies don't wanna hire new drivers because the new drivers will use their trucks to learn how to brake properly and then quit and find some other job now that they have experience. Leaving the old company with the bill of fixing the burned out brakes. What if that is what these shows are to these people. Something to use to get experience, their name out, etc. Until they can finally work on the thing they actually give a shut about.

    My biggest pet peeve of modern fiction in general is the over-used trope that good and evil are two sides of a coin and you must have an equal balance of both for any kind of resolution

  • @samwallaceart288

    @samwallaceart288

    5 күн бұрын

    The better version of that trope is "you need strength tempered by mercy". Obi-Wan was by no means a pacificist who wants to appease everyone; he always sought a balanced resolution, but if he needed to chop a guy's arm off, he wouldn't hesitate, hurt feelings be damned. The Sith simping "without evil, nothing gets done" was originally supposed to be a bullshit side-stepping of the fact that the Jedi were _already_ the balanced mindset.

This show was not that show.

    Here’s how you can make the death of Jecki(?) contribute slightly more to Smilo’s character; have him appear a little sad or disappointed that he had to kill her. Don’t have him call her ‘it’. “You brought her here” has no weight when Smilo seems like he has no problems with killing her in the first place. Maybe even have his fight with her be an obvious mismatch, similar to Luke and Vader on Bespin; he has no trouble in fending her off and keeps easily taking her out of the fight without attempting to kill her, but when Sol joins in, the numbers game starts to tell, so Smilo commits to taking Jecki out permanently. Give us something!

    The reason why many people, myself included, thought that the balance in the force was about numbers: I was about 10 when I saw Return of the Jedi in the theater. It is important to state that it was only the third movie in the franchise and we had no idea what was going to be in the prequels. All of the context of the force and Jedi was contained in those three movies and in my child brain it did seem very much that it was about numbers. At the end of the movie there was only Luke and the two sith so when Vader yeeted (and killed ie no coming back from that) Palpatine the force was now balanced with only two users. It can be difficult to change what we learn in our formative years especially if it is something emotional such as a perspective about a beloved movie franchise

    If you check out the EU on the topic of the balance between light and dark, you will find the Gray Jedi. They are prominently covered in the KOTOR games, especially the second one. In the EU books, starting really with the first one (Thrawn Trilogy), Luke begins doubting the Jedi way, while he attempts to follow it. Example: He questions how the jedi mind trick would not be an application of the dark side, as it is an invasion into the mind of another, and a breaking of their will. Even in the movies he rejects both Yoda's teachings, by rushing to help his friends, and the offer of power by the Emperor. In the EU, he later founds the New Jedi Order, as something distinct from the Jedi of old. This is done in a way more intelligent way of course than "You teach CHILDREN!!!".^^ Both the Jedi and the Sith follow philosophical codes, one being of passions and one being of detachment. You can easily find faults with both. I recommend the video "The Philosophy of Kreia" on KZread.

    Ugh. Lesley Headland wants THIS story to be the reason jedi don't take children under a certain age. Lady, if that's the case, you need to figure out how the Jedi were operating successfully for hundreds of years prior to this incident and what their normal protocols are to figure out what causes a change. You clearly don't know the ground state you're working with and you don't know how it works in the prequel era, so how can you POSSIBLY be writing about a pivotal moment that causes a fundamental shift? If you want to write about how a central element of a system is altered, you should at least understand the basic workings of the system. Your answers indicate you just have no idea about what any of this looks like on a normal day. It's a shocking lack of interest in telling a story.

    @@TheL0ngbeard that’s what MauLer said in this discussion, though I’d be willing to grant that the death of 100 or so witches is a good enough reason for the Jedi to re-evaluate things. But this is all done so poorly that it feels like this is the first time the jedi have ever encountered another group of Force users, which it simply can’t be in a group that has been around this long. This writer has no idea about how a sophisticated organization works and no interest in exploring them as a concept.

    There's no reason to believe that a child becoming a Jedi wouldn't be considered a high honor and a cause for celebration in the family, it's not like there's not historical examples of this in human history. Why would they think becoming a Jedi is a prison sentence? Also I'd imagine being an untrained force user would probably be quite distressing as you'd probably have uncontrolled visions, feeling people's emotions around you, harming people around you because you have telekinesis, etc so training would be a necessary just to have a normal existence, there's really no reason to believe that people wouldn't be voluntarily seeking out the Jedi when their child is force sensitive to seek help.

    Jedi abstaining from attachment is hard to imagine for regular people, but Zen/Buddhist practitioners (fairly analogous to Jedi training, I would say) are also alien to regular people. And if it isn't expected for a master Jedi to be able to significantly mitigate typical emotional reactions even to comrades being killed before them, then the Jedi way is pretty much useless and built on false promises. It would be difficult to portray usefully, but I'd expect a kind of inward preoccupation as they managed their inner efforts, if not being so masterful as to be pretty much unfazed by it, rather than just emoting like a regular person. Even soldiers are at least somewhat emotionally girded against the tragedies of battle, far more than someone who's not. They've mentally adjusted their expectations to anticipate the worst, in every battle, so they can continue acting pragmatically no matter what happens. These civilian reactions of characters in very non-civilian roles just undermines these aspects of the story. I understand that Jedi tranquility could easily just appear as wooden non-acting, and make it hard for typical connecting with the audience, but some attention to this would lend the material some much appreciated depth. Also, as a side note, 'non-attachment' can also refer to allowing yourself natural emotional responses to things, but letting it come and go and not holding onto that itself. In other words, 'acceptance' taken to the fullest degree; casting off of egoistic 'clinging'. That could potentially allow for some degree of connections. I'm not 100% sure which 'lack of attachment' is meant by the Jedi way, but this is a possible expression of it, that is more relatable and 'human'. In Sol's case, it would probably be more like a subdued sorrow, with frustration and anger being basically absent. He'd probably have to meditate extra to attend to it properly, but I don't think he'd allow it to distract his awareness and self-control in its throes. The meditation and training is pre-laying the groundwork, so there needn't be the reactive turmoil when the terrible circumstance arises. Again, though, understandably tricky to fully convey on-screen.

    12:28 - this thing about Batman being fascist hunting down poor people is not only wrong but boring as well. For starters Bruce originally become Batman to free Gotham from the rule of mafia families; Carmine, Maroni etc. and we all know that people from mafia are very poor 😅Other than that Batman fight insane criminals which often don't care about financial gains at all - so you can say that poverty lead them to crime. I wonder what those progressive writers would say knowing that in the beginning of Knightfall story Batman saved entire school of young woman from Mr. Zsasz - not so long ago MauLer played Arkham games, so he knows how lovely this guy is... Don't those progressive writers don't wanna save lives of young woman? As for fascist angle; I remember story called Golem of Gotham" in which Batman was investigating and trying to stop activity of neo-nazi terrorists in Gotham - but sure Batman is a fascist and those neo-nazists were just poor people... 😅As for kinky site of Batman - sure there is Catwoman but other than that I don't see much of conection.

    35:30 Oof, bad take. Them not having super powers absolutely sucked, it directly led to the "girls get it done" moment because the "Boys" are, as humans, completely useless. In the comics, they had powers from the start and it was the supes that were completely useless for the most part, because they had inconsistent powers, no training and were mentally unstable. Instead of just making the supes more of a threat, they also made the Boys weak and therefore created a new imbalance. Which had to be corrected by new supers coming in to save the day, making this basically just another superhero show, instead of the opposite, which is what it was meant to be.
