@Science Is Dope I think you understand the mathematical problem Ef had, he thinks if there is an event A. The probability of it happening P(A) and the probability of it not happening P(A') are always equal. i.e. P(A) = P(A') which is false. The relationship between them is actually P(A) + P(A') = 1. Even one of my friend had this same problem had a hard time explaining this to him as well.

Koi is sajjan ko class 12 ki probability ka chapter padhao. All phenomenons doesn't need to be equally likely so it's not 50-50. In this case humans have imagined or created a philosophy in order to describe the metaphysical reality which was completely intuitive and not based on any solid or empirical evidence. Let's put it in this way. Let's assume there are 'x' explanations available for describing the reality of universe and 'brhama' is one of those. All the scientific theories and explanations offered by other religions or philosophers are also included in this 'x'. So, the probability that Brahma theory is the true one is not 1/x because there are more probable theories which are based on reliable and good evidences. So, obviously these theories are more probable than the Brahma theory and hence the probability of Brahma theory being true goes much lower than 1/x. Now 'x' is not one or two or three there are soo many explanations and soo many possibilities that you can't even count.

My blud using probability in an odd way, having two possible outcomes of an event doesn't mean that u can assign a 50% probability to each, example - paint 4 walls of a room, 3 with Red colour and 1 with yellow colour, so now the wall can either be red or yellow but u can't assign 50% possibility to them. Similarly i don't think anyone can quantify probability for the existence of God, you can only assign qualitative terms like 'likely' or 'unlikely'.

Vimoh, first of all, even if there are only 2 options, it doesn't mean they have 50% probability each. The caller wanted you to agree on 50% probability because his argument was based on that (a variation of Pascal's wager, I would assume). Also, I'm surprised why you didn't point out more hardcore caste references in other Hindu scriptures (Manusmriti, for example) other than Bhagvad Gita.

Agree with you . Vimoh is misleading the discussion. If he is agnostic atheist means he doesnot know. Then there is probabality that it might be there or might not be. The problem with Vimoh is his complete rejection .This never happen in mathematical model also. In great debate let some one assume something opposite and then by rationale one come to conclusion by going through all possible acceptance or rejection.

Hey Vimoh - are culture and religion the same things though? I feel that culture is sort of a lagging indicator of all the factors influencing a society - and religion being one of the factors, science, philosophy, weather, natural disasters, terrain, invasions, diseases, etc influence the way a culture evolves too, of course religion has a big part to play in it. The 1930s great depression in America gave rise to a culture of extreme frugality, the 14th century black plague in Europe gave rise to a culture that valued hygiene above other things and so on.

A dimpele example for may, may not and impossible. A an arm rest can wxist in a cair or an arm resr can't. But there is no invisible armrest. The existance of Invisible armrest in a chair is impossible. It's the simplest example I can think of.

He is mistaken in a fundamental way as he's confusing possibility with probability. A false dichotomy, either " possible or not possible" will only give you (erroneously) 50 percent probability. It's like rolling a perfect 6 on a balanced dice. If you count only possibility, yes I either roll a six or I don't that gives me a 50 50 chance. But actually I either roll a 1, or 2, or 3, or 4, or 5, or 6. That's lowers my perfect six to only one in six when you count all probable outcomes

The 50-50 chance applies to a fair object, like a coin, in theory. Once you move to a practical object in real life, that assumption doesn't stand. I also think that probability applies to defined events that exist. Applying it to an undefined, ambiguous, and fictional concept like God is inappropriate. Nerds should check out the probability wiki. There's a lot more to it than the 50-50 chance that we all know of.

Atheism is the rejection of the claim that god exists. some humans claim that god exist, Atheism is just rejection of those claims due to lack of evidence to support their claim. (I think Agnosticism is useless term, it is to do with knowability, that makes every one Agnostic, Just like every one is Agnostic about Dragons, Unicorns) 2. Either I will win a lottery, or I will not. That does not make it 50-50 chances of me winning a lottery. That is not how maths works.
