Mailbag galore.
Dave screws up and releases the magic smoke on the best mailbag item ever! - the time circuits from Back To The Future. Turns a light bulb on with his mobile phone, and goes underwater in a submarine.
And a cameo appearance by everyone's favorite.

+EEVblog Not sure if someone already pointed this out, or if you've already noticed by now, but it says in the letter that "the side of the pin header where the connector's key goes is marked." You ought not to have skipped over that. No worries though. It gave you a perfect opportunity to teach us how to solder an SMD chip (and somehow mess up the Clock pin lol). It happens to all of us. But these things do say Read Letter First for a reason. Though I do think they could make the thing more idiot proof by using keyed connectors, or at least reverse current protection diodes. Would have saved you a lot of trouble if they did. Anyway, thanks for the cool blog. Cheers!
This is possibly one of the best Mailbag Mondays videos ever. Awesome job Dave and mailers!
Greetings from the shackspace :D Unfortunatly I didn't help doing the time circuit because I wasn't member of the shack back then. But I'm pretty proud to be it now and the other clock works just fine :)
You were so excited by that mailbag you just dived in and connected it the wrong way round, exactly what I do !
Dave, my guess on flipped display for the two USB Voltage/Current meters is so that you can have either left or right side output connector and still see the display correctly. Consider this when you plug one into a laptop; I have USB connectors on both the right and left side of my laptop.
Dave, Belgian beer is the absolute best beer in the world.
Some of your fans, are so so Good to you. Thumbs up to those kind people, more power to those wonderful fans.
Duvel the beer in the upper right of the postcard is probably the best beer I've had. Perfect for those days when you let the magic smoke out.
Really liked this mailbag session. hopefully you can get that clock repaired and working for the next one :)
It came with a 1.25A wall charger. It has a "USB Charge" mode that limits current draw to .5A when it detects that it's connected to a computer. The trick is to short the data pins on the USB connector which is what tells it to enable full current draw. IIRC a lot of tablets do this too... IIRC the kindle fire comes with a 2.6A USB charger.
Looks like a new star of the video blogosphere is born. Great ending. Props to Sagan!
those USB measure things are brilliant :-) I allways like watching your videos, but this mailbag was outstanding thanks to those who donated such brilliant, nice, cool or just interesting things. So thumb up to Dave and the other thumb up for the people that send such things.
We use both edison screw and boyonet types here. Edison screw would be the popular now.
Earlier in time: Doc Brown pulls the package containing a real Flux Capacitor out of the post for fears of a space-time continuum tear after watching Dave handled the display panel.
same as here in the UK, bayonet is slowly phasing out, with things like IKEA lamps having weird tiny screw fittings!
I remember getting a 14+ T-Rex LEGO with motors and pneumatics for my sixth birthday.
FYI: Some usb devices do draw more than 1A (in charge mode). Usually Car GPS units and some smartphones (my LG Nitro HD can draw 1.25A).
I normally don't enjoy mail bags, but this one was great.
They start the young kids on the bigger Duplo LEGO, and then the regular LEGO - two bites of the cherry!
This got a thumbs up at 6 minutes for that ShackSpace clock. Truly Awesome!
Lego was my baby sitter when I was a kid, I used to play for HOURS (and I mean 6-8 hours straight).
that Sagan´s little thump up made my day :) awesome.
Yup, lost my cookies at our fathers day picnic yesterday. Dodgy Thai chicken from the night before.
I have a couple of GSM SIM cards from Ting.com -- one that I got from Adafruit, the other directly from Ting. I spent more than $5 on the phone to go with them, but I primarily got them for Adafruit cellular Arduino use, but HAD to test it, so I got a $15 GSM phone by BLU on Amazon. Ting is very cheap -- pay-as-you-go except for a "line active" charge, but two active lines for voice and text is only $18 a month, and data is as you go. I'm looking forward to using one of these cards in the Adafruit Feather FONA board for a project. (I found out the cost for two active lines by accidentally using one sim card in a phone that turned out to be incompatible with Ting at first, returning it, and getting the BLU Z3...then used the OTHER sim card in the new phone by mistake. If you get multiple Ting cards, don't use them until you need them, because once active, if you deactivate a line it burns that sim card and you need to replace it.) Yes, I know this is a necropost. :/
I'm a 911 emergency operator. Good place to get this in here; If a phone is out of service/no sim car IT CAN STILL DIAL 911, 112, 999, etc. DO NOT GIVE IT TO A CHILD TO PLAY WITH! IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY HIT EMERGENCY DIAL, DO NOT HANG UP! We get notified when the call comes in that the call was placed and nothing sucks more than hearing a person talk then the line disconnects.
I've seen the "bayonet" type bulbs in France, too. They definitely have the "Edison screw" variety also, there. Great thing about standards is if you don't like them there's always another one ;-)
The other one is probably flipped so you can use 2 ports side by side and have the controls on the outside.
The USB meter unit scale for current is to match the standard and not to be down to the nearest milli-amp. USB devices can draw abit of current these days.
ON my school one year a guys did a project where use the telephone messages to turon on or off a lights.
Hi Dave! Belgian Beers are highly regarded the world over for their outstanding quality. While I understand that beer is not your cup of tea, some of the beers in the post card are real treats!
The current can go ewl over an Amp. The charger for the Nexus 7 for example delivers up to 2 Amps...
I think the USB current sensors are mirrored like that because some laptops have the USB ports on the left, some are on the right...Then you can use the proper one and your numbers aren't upside down...
"2400W and I didn't blow anything up" it helps that it almost doesn't matter which way you connect the power, so long as the earth lead is connected where it should be :P
Read "Battery Charging Specification 1.2". There is way's how you use and tell device when usb is DCP or else. DCP is 1.5A.
i believe there is a link on the main website. if not i know it is in Dave's recommended channels.
The manual has been thrown away first second after opening. Great kid :) !
Hey Dave, many newer USB charging devices use over 1 amp these days (tablets, high powered smart phones, etc)
And to confuse you, there are also Pasadenas in Texas and Maryland.
Best EEV Blog video ever made. You are a legend!
Just ordered FX 888D soldering station. Pretty excited :D
23:00 You can't use the phone without installing a sim card in it. You can only call the emergency number.
It's ironic that flipping thru my recommended list I find this old video that has back to the future in it today, I say this because on my way home from work I was behind a car with a twin pines bumper sticker. Now where's doc to get me to a better time ;)
Wish my mailbox was filled with this kind of stuff... damn!
Meved mean Bear . That is why you have that sign there :)
I could give you some but my two bouquets are for prototypes design and test. Legos are amazing to have a idea of what it should look like and also spend some time. :)
If you power stuff from your PC the USB can bi on both sides. May be this is why he has 2 different boards?
Posting when you f&4k it up is all part of your "real human" style. Keep up the good work Dave ;)
Yes indeed, they are awesome!
I have never had that happen. Ever. How much do you pay for the bulbs? If they make proper contact wouldn't heat transfer to the metal socket too? Then both would expand.
PA = Pennsylvania pasadena is a city in CA(California) but hey you usually get them right!
Couldn't help notice those lightbulbs. The ones we have here in North America screw into the socket, but yours apparently don't have threads. Sometimes I hate living in North America (the heat expansion gets the damn light bulbs stuck)
Dave: Great videos Sir. Thanks to you, I have a new Hakko FX 880D soldering station after seeing you use one. It is the digital version and it works great and I love it. Thanks. Bill
Well at least it's nice for me to know even blokes with your knowledge can blow stuff up!
Awesome Dave, thanks!
1. Where we can sign for multimeter LEGO? Maybe LEGO version of ICL7106? :) 2. What was the current limiter setting when you fried this great BTTF clock?
I got a chuckle out of that!
Very well executed mailbag! A little hint though: "Medved" in Czech language means "Bear" :)
Dave: How about more fix it videos. My wife bought me a oscilloscope but I had to send it back as it did not work correctly as was stated. Grab a couple of scopes by chance and show us how to trouble shoot and fix! Thanks for the videos
12:37 - the chip is red-plating :)
I say a DeLorean DMC-12 yesterday at a show here in Sweden. You should visit here after Denmark Dave. =)
@9:40 ALERT! Looks like some (top) pins are shorted!? Or...?
Sagan reminds me of a really little John Noble :D
I wonder why they didn't faithfully replicate the face of the time circuit. You can get hammered finish paint and those Dymo label makers are still around.
PA is Pennsylvania. But, I'm not chastising you! Love your videos, mate.
Medved in most Slavic languages means bear. That's why there's a bear on PCB. My friends last name is Medved too. I guess that Josip Medved originates from south or east europe. Thumbs up mate!
I hope you can find that time circuit chips nowadays and don't end up fixing it with a couple of vacuum tubes attached at the back, maybe they're not yet invented ;)
The guy who sent the phone said in his letter it would not work in Australia.
Got a question... were all of these components available back in 1985?
i want that switch, is pretty handy, you dont have to search for the light switch, just grab your cellphone and turn the light on :)
Keep up the good work, ivloce coming home from work and watching these videos.
took the instructions and chucked them to the side. Chip off the old block. LOL
lol Sagan doing the thumbs up is awesome!
31:08 - "Look Sagan, here's something that daddy DIDN'T blow up!" ;)
best part: Sagan opening the box!
travels in time!, and prevents destruction of this apparatus.
Alrighty, I'm down for the multimeter lego kit :D
Beautiful little kid. Just adorable...
besides... 11:44 ... fix it with parts available in 1955 ;)
A LEGO Oscilloscope would be amazing !!!!
"A hippo or something..." "Whatever that animal is supposed to be" xDD
My sister got my 2 year old nephew a basic lego kit. She paid $15 for a small bike and a bin.
The name of the Belgium dude was: jeroen. Have a nice day!
Great vid! Love the Back to the Future stuff - you lucky sod!
Awesome! Back to The Future Lego's! I'm 30 years old and I want to go buy that myself. I'd mod the heck out of it though. Think we'll see an EEVblogMods channel any time in the future? I'm sure you could pump a couple gigawatts into that DeLorean.
That clock is awesome!!
You forgot to say "Catch you next time" :)
BTTF display - I guess you didn't think to match up the colors on the ribbon cable - WHA-whaaaa....
FYI. Josip is pronounced with a Y, Yosip.
31:29 Proper little engineer, toss the instructions aside :)
Sagan is AWESOME.
Oh Sagan make me fell thous days when I was a child.
1:02 Davegasm xD
Fun fact: They didn't put the DeLorean on display .. >_>
I'm also one of your viewers from Denmark :-D greetings from all the way op here :-)
Great mailbag episode!
The animal on usb measure board is really bear. His name - Medved = Bear
i finally know where the outatime licence plates comes from
I would LOVE a Fluke 87 or Agilent 3054 lego set.
Lol PA is Pennsylvania, great video can't wait for the next one :D
D'awww, Sagan is so adorable! :D
