From what I can remember, Edward could only read people's thoughts within a few miles depending on how familiar he was with the person. He was in another country in this scene, so he could basically hear only what Jacob tells him and he might not have even bothered to read Jacob even if he could since Rosalie already told him about Alice's vision before he called so he just jumped into conclusion and took it as a confirmation without being critical about it just like what happened with Romeo and Juliet which the movie referenced at the beginning.
