CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Kim (Winona Ryder) tries to stop Jim (Anthony Michael Hall) when he attacks Edward (Johnny Depp), but Edward eventually fights back.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands opens as an eccentric inventor (Vincent Price) lovingly assembles a synthetic youth named Edward (Johnny Depp). Edward has all the essential ingredients for today's standard body, with the exception of a pair of hands. For what is initially thought to be a temporary period, he is fitted with long, scissor-like extremities that, while able to trim a mean hedge, are hardly conducive to day-to-day life. When the kindly inventor dies, however, Edward is left lonely and cursed with some very heavy metal for hands. He is eventually taken in by Peg Boggs (Dianne Weist), an Avon lady who takes pity on him after seeing his bleak existence. Edward, in spite of his inherent ability to slay anyone he comes across, is a gentle soul whose only wish is to be loved. His impromptu family has, at best, a limited understanding of Edward, but he finds himself drawn to Peg's weary but sympathetic daughter, Kim (Winona Ryder), who is dating Jim (Anthony Michael Hall), the neighborhood bully. Meanwhile, Edward finds himself a local celebrity after the town realizes that his talents include creative hedge trimming and an unrivaled ability to cut hair. His so-called friends are proven fair-weather when Edward is accused of a crime, after which his only supporters are Peg and Kim.

You know I was thinking about the same thing because this movie was before Disney's Beauty and the Beast came in the year that was coming which was 1991 and Edward Scissorhands came out in 1990, and even though both of these movies have a bit of the same story lines the characters are a bit the same as well like Edward is like Beast/Prince Adam, Kim is like Belle and Jim is like Gaston.

If you think about it, it's kind of like a hiding in plain sight type of thing. Jim knows Edward has sharp and dangerous scissorhands but in the need of trying to make himself the "alpha", he completely forgot about them until the very last moment where Edward stabs him. Don't underestimate anyone, it might come back to bite you

You know,it's actually curious that Jim would even want to try to defend Kim,considering he's just attacked her as well. I mean, that's a little two-faced in my book. But then,he probably just tells Edward "Stay away from her!" simply to show how tough he is,even if he really is past caring about restoring his relationship with Kim.

I cannot unsee the similarities between this scene and Beauty and the Beast when Gaston tries to kill the beast because of Belle but also pride and discrimination. Just like the Beast, Edward's first concern is not Jim but he has to kill him as he is relentless and poses a huge threat to more than just the protagonist in question.

Tim Burton has said he grew up feeling exactly like Edward. That's where he and Caroline Thompson developed the movie's concept from. When Edward finally snaps in this scene and kills Jim, it's the perfect reflection of Burton himself snapping, artistically. He squeezed every last drop of all the alienation, rage, confusion, and torment he had felt his entire life into how he directed this film, with its compassionate and sincere romance and, conversely, its unabashedly blunt satire of modern suburbia. Plus, Johnny Depp admitted to crying when he first read the script, and Danny Elfman has, like Burton, called it his most personal and cherished work. I have never identified with any other movie more, but beyond that, it truly is artistically perfect, and narratively timeless and universal.

As much as I love this movie, it can be sometimes hard for me to watch, because as someone who's always been sort of an outcast, socially awkward, and has seldom ever fit in with the "normal" crowd, I can definitely identify with Edward, as well. I always feel so sad, and even angry at times, for what happens to him throughout the second half of the film, especially. The feeling of being judged and misunderstood just hits really close to home.

Looking back, I'm glad it ended this way because the fact is Johnny Depp's character Edward Scissorhands did not belong in that neighborhood and those people did not deserve him. The majority of them were greedy, selfish, and feigned interest in him because of his talent. It's sad that he and Wynona Ryder's character couldn't stay together but overall this is the best kind of ending for such a film.

Brittany Olexa It was one of the reason why Anthony Micheal Hall took this role. A lot of people still saw him as "The Geek" from 16 Candles. Anthony was trying so hard to get away from that, but a lot of people at the time couldn't look past that image of him. After this movie, Anthony was slowly starting to break away from the Nerdy/Geeky image and started getting more "Get-Up" roles, that eventually gained him the part of Johnny Smith on the tv series, "The Dead Zone".

In this scene Edward retreats to the big mansion from the angry townsfolk when Kim enters and starts dialogue, there is tense music which leaves audience feeling suspense which suddenly turns to calm romantic-like music when Kim enters which makes Kim feel like a calming, safe force. When Kim and Edward are talking the camera is close-up on their faces which shows their emotions. Suddenly Jim enters and starts firing shots at Edward, the camera is pointing up at Edward which makes him look like the dominant force the music gets more intense again because they are in danger. They fight back and the quarrelling continues until Kim has Jim on the ground with Edward’s scissor hand on his neck this shot has the camera pointing a sideways shot at Kim and Jim fighting with Edward’s face in focus to show his feelings and the situation he has been put in. Jim gets up, pushing Kim down and Edward goes to protect her. Edward stabs Jim in the stomach pushing him out the window and falling to his death. In the next shot the camera is on the ground outside the building pointing up at Edward and Kim making them look small but also powerful because they have overcome an intense confrontation. The next shot is pointing down at Jim’s lifeless body making him look weak and powerless, his arms are also spread out which could be some Christian symbolism since he died for his own sins. The setting of this scene is a dark mansion at midnight which makes the audience think the scene is going to be scary or confrontational in some way. This scene is trying to promote the value of love and doing anything for the one you love in this case Edward saves Kim and himself from the disgruntled Jim who is trying to attack them. The feeling of love is achieved via camera angles, audio(talking) and facial expressions of the characters. This scene also critiques the value in society of dominance and being the alpha or strongest man, in this scene Jim is the alpha strong man but is taken down by the timid and quiet beta Edward. It is like the scene is saying don’t always try and be the strongest, most masculine man but should be nice and kind then you will still get the girl in the end. This is achieved via camera angles and characterisation

" I said stay away from her" the look on Edward's face...like nah you staying away from her! He was so gentle up until this moment. You see the anger! Love it

To me edward is like saying to jim, "If you cared for kim, you would come to your senses and not strike her! So you will be given for what you deserve." By saying those sentences in his mind that I imagine and stabbing jim with his finger blade from 1:46 to 1:52. That is an interesting defending by killing scene there.

The bully forgetting the man had scissors for hands is so poetically perfect to how short sighted the entire town was through this film

I never noticed when Kim threatens to kill Jim, she uses an unconscious Edward's hand as a weapon. I always thought those were a spare laying around the attic. Nice detail.
