Edward Elgar Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 played by Michael T. C. Hey at Saint Patrick's Cathedral
Музыка
Edward Elgar composed Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 in 1901. The work was played on the Newberry Memorial Organ at Woolsey Hall on the new Hutching Organ in 1905. At that time Edward Elgar received an honorary doctorate of music from Yale.
Here Organist Michael T. C. Hey plays it on the Great Organ at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. The current organs at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City were designed by Pietro Yon and built by the Kilgen Organ Company of St. Louis, Missouri. Yon’s successor, Charles Courboin, made subtle tonal changes to the organ, but it was Courboin’s successor, John Grady, made the most significant alterations to the organ’s tonal makeup with substantial revoicing of the reed stops. Grady was followed by John-Michael Caprio, who was responsible for the first major cleaning of the cathedral organs in more than years. Under his supervision, two twin five-manual consoles were built by Robert Turner of California, enabling the combined organs’ more than, pipes to be played simultaneously from either end of the cathedral. From 1993 to 1995 the Peraggallo Organ Company of Paterson, N.J., fully cleaned and rewired the enormous instrument, later adding the present unenclosed pipe work to the existing Echo division, located at the cathedral’s crossing.

Michael Hey has been increasingly visible on concert stages across the country. In 2010, he made his New York City debut in Alice Tully Hall performing with the Juilliard Orchestra, and has since performed solo recitals at Lincoln Center, Kimmel Center (Philadelphia), Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.), and the Esplanade (Singapore). He graduated in 2014 from the Juilliard School with bachelor and master of music degrees in organ performance, under Paul Jacobs. He was immediately appointed Assistant Director of Music and Organist of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City where, in September 2015, he performed for Masses for the first U.S. visit of Pope Francis. Mr. Hey was one of the finalists in the 2016 Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition (Pennsylvania).

David ... try to find Vitgil Fox's at Wanamaker's c. 1964. Michael does a Stirling job!
The orchestral-sounding chamade trumpet at 5:18 is the most authentic-sounding trumpet stop I have heard.
who needs an orchestra to play this when you have Mr Hey playing it on the mighty Kilghen at St Patrick's Cathedral??? This should be the "gold standard" for Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance!
Twinkletoes and twinklefingers. Amazing to be able to fit in so many notes on manuals and pedalboard at this speed and from memory. I'm astounded !
Elgar would have been proud! And fantastic pedal thechnique!

The marvelous result of thousands of hours of work!! Great performance!!
Those of us that are fans of the "king of instruments" are truly blessed to have a wonderful prodigy like Michael at such a young age. Limitless potential, and kinda scary!
damn... I love this guy, purple socks and all!!
I love the way his feet are romancing the pedals at the hymnal section of this festive piece
MAGNIFICENT!! It gives me chills!
As an organist myself - I loved your expression, Michael! We can't play that instrument like typewriters - you have to feel and express the beauty and power of it! Great job.
You are an inspiration Sir! I have not heard this played this well on an organ ever before! whoaow!
Smooth as silk and dynamic as ever.
One of the best Organ Composition I heard ever....

I am listening yet again to this favorite and marvel that this is being played from memory! How do organists do that? Wow!
When I was young, I didn’t like this piece of music. Then I went to school (higher education), which was very challenging for many years, and I graduated. I marched to this tune and fell in love with it, it was a part of my big day and it is special now as a memory! Fabulously played in this video, too! Just amazing!
WOW !! And I keep playing the trumpet solo over and over.
My God what a fantastic young man. All in his memory and look at his feet. Take me months to come a mile of that. Joyous......................
Totally blown away , this Organist is bang on it , Totally in awe , the foot work is " UNBELIEVABLE " . THANKYOU ❤
Thanks for the great rendition of an old favorite, Michael. What an irresistible melody! Oh, the socks are pretty irresistible, too!
Thanking you 👉 🇺🇸 From London. 🇬🇧 🤝 🇺🇸
The best recording of this piece ever. The organist superb. The organ better than ever, my favorite Cathedral organ.
I am totally amazed at this talent. Gobsmacked. Fantastic. All by ear. ⛪️🇬🇧💙🌈
Edward does such an excellent job playing this piece. This was played at my high school graduation in May 1979. Thanks for the great memories Edward.
Reminds me so much of high school graduation but they used theater organ. It was 35 years ago, but wish you had been there to do this piece!
You are truly a Gift of God Michael. I hope God brings us together one fine dayI am Resident Church Organist self taught and played in the presence OF THE LATE, His Eminence Cardinal Basil Hume OSB.
The second movement of this beautiful piece really hits home for me, as it was played live at my high school graduation by my high school marching band (mainly the returning members).

Reminds me of my eight grade graduation inn St Marys Cathedral in 1996 I haven’t heard it like that since then best I’ve heard in years on the organ live ❤️
Simply, BRILLIANT!
As the other reviewers before me have said, this is not only a manifestation of consummate technical skill, but being able to effectively communicate the beauty of the piece through superb selection of what are ideal registrations and effective use of the expression divisions. Marvelous recording, as well. Bravo!
Wonderful! I loved that Chamade Trumpet surprise!!

Amazing ! Edward Elgar would have been proud .Highest congratulations maestro !!
I got to see him preform “pageant” by Leo Sowerby recently. He stunned everyone in the cathedral
The trumpet stop at the end sounds like it could overpower the entire organ. Pretty cool in my opinion!
Excellent!!! He plays it without sheet music.... Wonderful! He is a MASTER Organist!!

Amazing performance and smooth flawless execution. Cool and talented organist!
Very well done Michael. Particularly love your delicate footwork and use of the sliding technique. Very professional video - great quality video and audio. I put my headphones on and could easily imagine I was sat in the Cathedral listening to you play this! Thank you for taking the time to record and upload.
It sounds like Virgil Fox at the Wanamaker organ in 1976. There is a genius in this young man. MyGod award him a long and fruitful life.
I salute you sir! Keep playing!
Very beautifully played on a wonderful pipe organ

Every now and then I go on a P+C (Nrs 1 & 4) binge, seeking any and all recordings I can find. I do this because I can't get enough of their beautiful melodies and equally beautiful harmonizations. I measure the greatness of an interpretation by the intensity of the chills that go up and down my spine. This gorgeous performance nearly broke my back with those chills! I can't imagine how awesome it would have sounded live! Thank you for the masterfully artistic performance!!!
this is the best version that I've heard in ages … superb

I knew this recording from some years ago already... just rewatching it. I really love the last few minutes, it's so mighty and beautiful.
Stunning, flawless, breathtaking. An unparalleled performance. Congratulations
BRAVISSIMO, complimenti vivissimi!!!
This is interesting to hear two versions, one is played at Westminster pipe organ and this one in USA ! but then, in this video, i can notice the american touch ! Because this is an american pipe organ and not a brittish Father Willis or a Harrison ;) ! I can say one thing : the sounds of a pipe organ is the reflect of a nation !
This almost -- almost -- makes me want to get another degree.
Wow! Awesome organ & organist!!!
A wonderful performance!
Amazing performance!!!
Well done! Many thanks.
Absolutely stunning! Thanks for sharing! Regards from Brazil.
Superb performance !
