You can actually buy heavy-duty needles for sewing machines. I haven't used the needles on any deerskin yet but it does work on canvas heavy-duty tactical band and some leathers. It decreases your risk of breaking needles on thicker materials.

It looks good, and although the deer leather is a more functional option, aesthetically it's a less wise option, as the entire vest in-game seems to be made out of a tough, thick leather (note the texture at 0:50). And while it's not very visible, there is a collar on the vest as well. Good work though, it's still really well done.
