this is acoustic music. organ, vibraphone, strings, choir. Considering how old the movie is, I can assure you that those sounds I just mentioned were not created with a synthesizer. ok... maybe: electronic organ or organ-like synthesizer. (But, why use a synthesizer that sounds like an organ and not an organ directly...)

I hope you're aware the movie is based on a book by Stanisław Lem, with the same title - "Solaris". I advise you to read it if you didn't yet ;)

Makes me want to retire somewhere isolated for several years and dedicate myself solely for accomplishing my passions. And spend all the time I have on this Earth in creating something I'm proud of. Nobody will know my name, I will be forgotten. But I will be out there, doing whatever my idealistic mind, overtaken by wanderlust, wants me to do. Perhaps then, I'll be able to be happy, and I'll be able to die in peace. Eduard Artemyev is my favorite composer of all time. His music has always helped me to understand myself better. Most of Tarkovsky's works are more like prolonged meditations more than drama, and that's why the music in his films are so crucial - they set our minds into just the right mode for reverie.

Bach is a god of music.. His music is always wonderful.

Точно! Но - не в электронной музыке. Большинство электронных творений Артемьева - сольно или при участии "Бумеранга" - набор звуков, эксперименты с синтезированием. А вот "Раба любви", "Свой среди чужих..." - ЭТО ШЕДЕВРЫ НА ВЕКА!

Слезы душат меня. Как же хочется принять мир с его гадостями, мерзостями, ложью и красотой, и любовью, и мучительным счастьем. Разрывается сердце от любви.

This is so beautiful, it makes me sad.

the end is so oniric and peaceful in this one, the fourth versions that are played all over the movie are quite different, only the last one has this kind of turnover at the end by the way, this movie is one of the best, or maybe the best I've ever seen

per me questa è, insieme al quarto brandenburghese di Carlos, la miglior elaborazione ai sintetizzatori mai fatta di un pezzo di bach, c'è compenetrazione totale fra bach e tarkovskij, sono meravigliosi i titoli all'inizio con questo pezzo, incredibile, c'è una trasformazione nei timbri così naturale che sembra quasi la più normale prosecuzione del pezzo, il ruolo di artemiev è stato solo di trovare una "orchestrazione elettronica", eppure lo ringrazio dal profondo per aver creato ciò.

The Morux 1973 Да, это музыка Баха. Артемьев чуть осовременил ее, использовав прием "cantus firmus", которым пользовался и сам Бах в свое время. Артемьев взял тему Баха, и сверху написал свою мелодию.

+jake lake Шутка хорошая, мне понравилась! Если имя было бы Гун то правильно было бы сказать "с Гуном". Но имя Гуно, кончается на "O" поэтому правильно "с Гуно" не дополняя окончание, потому что имя не русское/русифицированное. Это можно хорошо иллюстрировать именами Роберто и Роберт. В первом случае было бы "с Роберто", окончание не меняется. Во втором случае "с Робертом" окончание изменилось. Мне кажется это можно отнести к тому что имя кончаясь на "о" имеет средний рoд, не мужской или женской. Например еще "Гюго" и "с Гюго". Имя "Гёте" имеет средний род тоже поэтому "с Гёте".

E.Artemiev has just put some sintesator voices on the original piece of J.S.Bach for this movie. However the performance of bwv 639 (on a real pipe organ, by an unknown organist) is the best of all I have ever heard.

One of the best compositions in the entire history of music. I believe that comparisons can not made between a trivial commercial piece of today and these immensities. In any case, since I discovered this piece, I could no longer coinceve of my existence.

(Yes, I know I am responding to a comment is 5 years old, but why should the age of a comment matter?). Absolutely agree, but the music is a facet of the culture that it came from - one leg of an octopus if you know what I mean. The culture that produced this music was Christian, and it was 'real Christianity', not like the 'McChristianity' (as in McDonald's) they have in America. (I'm not Christian btw). What does Bach's music say and what does it represent? All of that should be self-evident (and you have already answered it in a way). It's the same as the building architecture. Today, skyscrapers and all manner of modern buildings exist, but can these really compare to the architecture of European cathedrals and churches, of which Bach's music would have graced? Do these modern buildings have character? A soul? What do they say about the culture that built them? The music of today is Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift et al, and something I believe is called 'dubstep' and oh boy I could go on. This music certainly says something about the culture that created it and consumes it, but that is its only value: it has no artistic value. Can dubstep be compared to the artistry of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven? What kind of "octopus" exists now? I'll tell you the truth: the god of the modern world is GDP.

I remember lending my dad a dvd of Solaris. He played the organ. When the opening credits started, he went "hmm" in a particular tone. An appreciative "hmm", not a disapproving one (that was in a different tone). A man of many words. But I knew his appreciative "hmm" meant "my brain is partly here: I recognise this as good". I think he thought the actual film silly/too impressionable (metaphysical acrobatics that are ultimately meaningless), but I think he also appreciate this "remix" of the opening credit tune, which appears in the penultimate scene of the film, doctoring Bach slightly but actually in a good way. An appropriate orchestration. And I've said too much. Be as silent as the guy in this picture and the tune will make more sense than all "this".

maybe the movie is like that, but the book is pretty great. Not the best of Lem but a good example of his cosmic cynicism. the whole book is an attemtp to understand something ultimately ununderstandable. the realization of it is taken as a sad ordeal of human limitation, but stanislaw lem goes a step forward giving a quasi-religious explanation to solaris, as if to mock human reasoning itself, quite cool.

Both the book and the movie are masterworks. Lem explores his favourite theme of the futility of trying to communicate or understand what is truly alien, other, a theme he also explored in his rather cruel and cynical way in His Master's Voice. Tatkovsky is more psychological, more metaphysical, and deeper in a certain way. I think it might be my favourite movie.

His music is the mathematics of the soul.

Han er et geni. Og dette er et stoff.

It is somehow sad, but this interpretation gets the tempo and the intonation absolutely perfect. We should not underestimate electronic interpretations like this one and the ones by Tomita.

Almost nothing is added from the original score. But it's just enough to give it a strange space vibe.

I know right. It’s such a simple edit but I feel that those high pitched bells make it almost sadder, more nostalgic. Maybe just because I associate this song with scenes from the movie.

Композиция и называется в оригинале "Вспоминая Баха". Артемьев и не скрывал этого особо. Конечно Бах создатель этой музыки, Артемьев ее просто по современному доработал.

Он не то шо взял что-то от Баха а там звучит хоральная прелюдия Баха Фа минор. Артемьев добавил туда просто звуки, которые там вообще лишние. Вот и вся история. Берёте полонез агиньского, добавляете туда пару звуков, делаете название - вспоминая полонез агиньского и подписываете вашей фамилией и вы Артемьев Намбер цвай.

Боже мой и это он написал???!?!? Какой же он крутой!!!!!!! Чем он вдохновляется?
