Experience what life may have been like in Edmonton once photography was able to record interesting details and events which makes Edmonton, North London, what it is today.
I’ve been collecting local photographs from the internet for quite some time and was at odds as to what to do with them. I then thought it would be interesting to use them in a way which would both entertain and educate. Therefore I’m hoping this video will inspire other Edmonton residents to look deeper into the fascinating history of our borough. Luckily a walk through the streets of Edmonton will show you a lot of our history is still visible to this day.
We are extremely lucky to have been born at a time when the internet has made the exploration of our history so easy now. We have internet sites which can help us find out so much more and people willing to give their time to help purely for the love of the subject and our town.
We have the Enfield Society www.enfieldsociety.org.uk
We have the Enfield Local Studies Library and Archive www.enfield.gov.uk/info/1062/l...
There are also Facebook Groups where locals post images and discuss local history and memories.
“Enfield’s past in photos“.
/ 239503666239293
“Enfield & surrounding areas Photos & Chat”.
/ 1586283508271462
“Edmontons Past”
/ 495174070589313
"Edmonton N9 Remembered"
/ 1401262083496631
"Enfield & Surrounding areas Photos and Chat"
/ 1586283508271462
I’ve used photos from all these sites without knowing who they may belong to and probably without permission but as you will see this is purely a non profit exercise which I’m hoping will inspire more to become interested in Enfield. I hope you will see an increase to your website and will not mind me using them.
Gary Boudier and the Enfield Local Studies Archive have generously granted me permission to use their images.
If I’ve used any of your material, let me know and I’ll credit you here. Thank you very much.
Just a word. The video is not historically accurate. It jumps from time zone to time zone and I may have got some things wrong but it’s only some entertaining historical fun which I hope people will enjoy and find interesting.

Born in a nursing home in Belsize Park, but home was Tillotson Road off Church Street from 1948-58, then Lowden Road until 1963. So many memories of childhood in Edmonton, fishing for tiddlers in Salmon;s Brook, Saturday morning pictures at the Granada, swimming baths behind the Town Hall etc etc. Thanks for putting this together - some views I've never seen before. Deeply nostalgic, and very sad for what has been swept away.

Hi Robert, thanks for your comments. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. There have been lots of changes over the years. It's not the Edmonton we knew and loved any longer. My garden backs on to Salmon's Brook, I haven't seen much in the way of fish life for ages now. We had dace about 15 years ago but I've seen nothing since.

Thank you John for a very interesting video. I was born and bred at Edmonton Green in the 1950's and I think it shows what a lovely place it once was full of old world charm. Alas no longer the case :-(. They destroyed it in the 60's with the concrete monstrosity of the shopping centre. I am sure nowadays they would never get planning permission to erase so many lovely historical buildings in one fell swoop and destroy the character of a place. ........Sad .

Thanks Janette, it's kind of you to comment. Although I loved the old Edmonton Green with it's indoor market, (my Mum had a little shop in there) unfortunately time marches on. The local population has increased rapidly and they've had to build to cater for that. I wish we could go back to the old days but unfortunately we can't. :) Thanks again.

My Mum, Dad and I lived in Tiverton Road, and later in Delhi Road, Bush Hill Park, and my Mum always did the majority of our weekly shopping in The Green. Before the Granada was obliterated, along with so much else, I played drums on its stage, in the band I was in around 1962/3. Another SERIOUSLY SAD loss was the unbelieveably wonderful Regal cinema. More a complex than just an enormous cinema. On the opposite side of Silver Street was Dancy's record shop, where my parents (who became friends with the Dancys) bought their 78s, back in the 40s and 50s, then I took over with my 45s and LPs. (the sounds really help with the visualisation of being there) Not entirely sure whereabouts in Edmonton they lived but as far as I can see I think they were there since the late 1700s then eventually my grandad moved to Essex after ww2. (unsure if this is true but I believe he's fathers house was bombed out during the blitz however this wasn't the reason for moving as he moved to Essex with hes own young family later on after the war) haven't been to edmonton but from what I can see it has changed significatly since the times of the photos in the video.

Hi Alex, thank you for taking the time to comment. I really do appreciate it. I'm pleased you found it interesting and yes, I do think the sound does make it a bit more engaging for people, I'm glad you found it so too. Edmonton was quite a wealthy area at one time due to the railway links into London. Many of the houses which have now been converted into flats were built with servants quarters on the top floor. You can still see signs of the bells for summoning the maid in some of the larger houses. Sadly, it's all changed now and like everywhere has been spoilt with too much development in any spare bit of space. Anyway thanks again, it was good to hear from you.
