Edisto Natchez-Kusso of South Carolina
In Charleston's backyard, about 400 Native Americans
are scattered along the
Edisto River. This is where they have lived for centuries.
The state of South Carolina recognized
the Edisto Natchez-Kusso Tribe in 2008.
The Tribal Council is working toward becoming federally recognized.
Sabrina Creel a board member of the tribal council worries that if her people are forgotten, the tribe will go extinct.

Shalawam, I'm also an Kusso aborigine, we must unite the Kusso-Natchez people
My family. Much love.
In the last few days, I've been thinking about how the native people lived in this lowcountry area before the Europeans. Everyday living, how did they decide where to build dwellings, how were they built? Where did they get water and how? What were their main food supplies? What was their tattooing practice like? Will there be a Pow-wow this year?
Ferderally recognized
