Edie Adams - That's All (I Love Lucy Series Finale)

Ойын-сауық

From the episode, "Lucy Meets the Moustache" of the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. The song meant so much more since it was the last episode of the popular I Love Lucy series. Lucy and Desi were also divorcing after a long tumultuous marriage. They still loved each other very much, but the problems that plagued the marriage couldn't keep them together. However, they remained friends even after they married other people, and when Desi died, Lucy was devastated. So in a sense, this song was meaningful for them both. All that they could give each other was love....that's all.
The last lines of the show....
Lucy: "Honey, honey, I just wanted to help."
Ricky: "From now on, you can help me by not trying to help me. But thanks, anyway."
---
That's All
Lyrics & Music by Alan Brandt and Bob Haymes, 1952
[brackets indicate Edie Adams' variation on the song]
I can only give you love that lasts forever
And a [the] promise to be near each time you call
And the only heart I own for you and you alone
That's all, that's all
I can only give you country walks in springtime
And a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall
And a love whose burning light will warm the winter night
That's all, that's all
There are those I am sure [who] have told you
They would give you the world for a toy
All I have are these arms to enfold you
And a love even time can't destroy
[And a love time can never destroy]
If you're wondering what I'm asking in return, dear
You'll be glad to know that my demands are small
Say it's me that you'll adore for now and evermore
That's all, that's all
[the following are not part of the original composition and what makes Edie Adams' version so special and unique]
I love you
Yes, I love you
That's all....

Im actually the grandson of Alan Brandt. The songwriter of this song. He was a great man. Sadly he passed on in 2002. My grandmother recently passed on this week. But both of them have inspired me to continue the artist tradition in the family. And both will be deeply missed Dane Brandt Lubart Grandson of Alan Brandt

+danarooneo Wow to have such a legacy must be interesting! I'm sorry for your loss. My Dad, who died two years ago, LOVED I Love Lucy and would watch it with us, and he also loved the Luci Desi Comedy hour. I don't know if we ever saw this final episode, but even still your grandfather was part of something incredible. Thank you for sharing.

VohnExel Thank you for the wonderful comment. Sadly my grand parents never told me anything about I love Lucy. But I do know that my Grandfather's song "That's All" is very famous. The famous artists that have used it include Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Bobby Darin, Michael Bubl'e, and more. My grandfather would be really proud of me because I am the star of a one man show of mine called "On the Spectrum a Tuneful Rally". It is a show that stands up for people with special needs. Anyway Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. :) Dane

Edie talked about this in interview. It was a song that was very special to her and Ernie, but she learned at the taping that it was probably the very worst choice for that episode, because by this time, Lucy and Desi were no longer speaking. Lucy filed for divorce the day after it wrapped. It was a very difficult shoot, and terribly sad. She said she looked around the room after finishing singing, and everyone was crying.

Aleta Hudson I saw an interview with Edie and she said in rehearsal after she finished the song Lucy and Ricky were in tears, she thought it was her or the song. But was told it was because they knew their marriage was coming to an end and Lucy said keep the song in the show. A hard decision I'm sure but the right one, Edie nailed it!

Hmmm, I didn't know Lucy insisted they keep it. She was giving Edie a hard time during rehearsals though, like Lucy wasn't happy with her blocking, or Edie's hairstyle and kept making her change it. but it was just because of the drama she and Desi were going through and she took it out on everybody.

Here's a bit of info most may not know: Lucille Ball actually requested Edie Adams to sing this particular song on her behalf. The reason: it was Lucy's way of expressing a final appeal to Desi in order to ward off the coming divorce filing. Lucy still loved Desi. She didn't want the divorce; however, she felt she had no choice because she had had enough of Desi's infidelities. After this episode wrapped, they walked out of their studio together for the final time. She filed for divorce the next day.

It's so sad that behind the scenes Lucy and Desi were not speaking to each other, only like "would you tell Miss Ball to stand over there?" and Lucy would say "Would you kindly tell Mr. Arnaz that . . ." I read this in her autobiography. The next day she filed for divorce. Poor Edie didn't know what was going on and mistakenly chose this song to sing and it made everybody cry. And everybody was having a rough time on the set. In a way the song was fitting though. In a sad way. :( The very end of this episode was so difficult for Lucy and Desi because they were supposed to kiss, but they kept crying and had to do it over again. It was a kiss that wrapped up 20 years of marriage.

sadly by this time the desilu marriage relationship had run its course....there is a cable network (decades) that aired a documentary on the cpl a few wks ago...it told how they were constantly arguing n decided to go on a European family vacation...by the time they returned they were not speaking n lucille filed for divorce 8 wks later....lucy remarried gary a few yrs later...gary was lucille's trophy husband..tall dark handsome n 13yrs yngr(eat ur hearts out girls) and i do believe that she grew to love him dearly....but there is a major difference btwn love vs inlove n i believe lucille was in love with desi untill the day she died..

They agreed to do I Love Lucy to keep their marriage steady but unfortunately like you said, the stresses of running a major TV studio and being on a hugely successful sitcom didn't help, plus they had 2 young children. I think he also cheated on her with a lot of women in Hollywood on top of drinking and gambling. yes Desi had a drinking problem around this time.

as the years have passed and my life experiences have allowed the way i view ppl,places,situations...i see things very differently related to lucillle and desi...all the comments i read appear to fault desi with the failure of the marriage because of his mny infidelities....everyones opinions are shaped based on what they have read...in Lucille's 1977 interview.. my take away was that lucille still loved desi deeply and resented him for throwing their love away...i also got the impression that she faulted desi with the dissolution marriage and felt her culpability has minimal if any at all...and that just plain bullshit and impossible...it takes two to tango...if any relationship fails both parties [played a role....it's not really about establishing a weighted value of culpability...80/20..50/50..70/30....because that is simply a matter of opinion not fact...s...when she met and started a relationship with desi he was a band leader that earned his primary income by touring(someone that mentally adapts to a frequent tour schedule...becomes use to not being in any one place for a lng period of time....once the tour is over and they return to thier home base...in a very short period they begin to get restless...when desi was on the road...lucille was back at home base and the entire time desi was on the road...her mind running rampant worrying about what he was doing and with whom..if his show ended at 1130pm...in her mind..it takes him x minutes to get back to his hotel...and if she called him until 4am and got no answer she auto assumed he was out sexing another women....everyone that comments about desi's drinking, gambling, constant infidelities...have made those comments based on what they have a read...no female has ever come fwd to discuss her wild nite with desi anaz....once i love became a super hit...desi wld have had curtail his infidelities because in the 50's any sex scandle wld have caused cbs to cancel i love lucy and the show was the crown jewel of desilu....if desi was out of lucille site for more than 10.5 seconds she auto assumed he was with another women....she wnted to keep him close to her so she came up with i love lucy...desi agreed bcause he really did love lucille....however, he agreed absent of realizing the outlet touring gave him and when he no lngr toured that outlet wld no longer be met....in all the stories i have read they all attributed desi's drinking & gambing to the stress of overseeing i love lucy and desiu....i now believe that to be bullshit...i will concede that they may been contributing factors...but i no longer believe they were the main factors...when lucille divorced desi shortly after..she brought him out and she took over his duties all while raising the the two kids and starring in and exec producing the lucy show....lucille cld do it but desi cld not...BULLSHIT...this was not brain surgery...the most challenging period wld have been getting the show and studio up & running...but once they were up and running...over a shrt period of time we are talking repetitive challenges that got easier day by day......desi agreed to i love lucy becuase he wanted his marriage to work...he and lucy travled to the studio together in the morning and after a 10hr day...they traveled home together in the eve...this is 5days aweek..on the wknds...lucille had an expectation that desi wld be spending his time with her and the kides...EVERYWEEKEND...that just to damn much togetherness...he wanted/needed sometime to himself.....lucille needed/wanted desi tethered to her side 24/7 n if he was out of her site more than 19.5 mins her mind wld go crazy worring about what he was doing and with whom...the drinking & gambling had little to do with the stress of the siticom & desilu and more to do with stress of the day to marriage.....no i am not psychic, desi or lucille were no friends of mine....i am not saying that ,y opinion is the gospel...my opinion is just that...my opinion...i will not cry or loose sleep because someone disagrees..

@Chadlton .. funny you mention hair .. there used to be a chain of beauty shops called “ Edie Adams Cut and Curl” .. old school grandma beauty shops.. I remember at one point they went unisex .. probably because the geriatric clientele was dying off . The first unisex shop I tried was one of these ..it hit me after I walked in they just changed the name but the decor was still the same so it was like I was in a beauty shop .. I reluctantly stayed and when my name was called an elderly old school beautician in uniform was going to be cutting my hair .. never had a beautician cut my hair before so I got a bit nervous.. she was going to wash my hair first which I never had done in a shop before so I guess this was a beauty shop process included in the price .. I was a bit antsy in the chair as she was shampooing my hair , kept telling me not to life my head , relax and keep my head all the way back. She really shampooed me thoroughly.. after that .. she cut my hair extremely well , I was very pleased .. all for 7.95 . I just wish I would of relaxed more during the shampoo and haircut..

The kind of direct, simple singing that is almost unheard of these days. Someone actually paying attention to the lyrics and the phrasing. No screaming, no wailing and trying to show us all how long she can hold a note or how loudly she can sing, which is what passes for talent on shows like American Idol. Beautiful. Edie was also very good in a small role as the nasty secretary in the film classic The Apartment, with Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon.

Really, Edie Adams chose this song by chance? I'm so glad she did! Her version of this song is amazing and (I've said this countless time before) the most beautiful I've *ever* heard. I can never grow tired of this song and wanted other people who never heard her sing it (the last episode is rarely aired) to enjoy it as much as I do. That's why I uploaded it. If anything, this song always reminds me of Edie Adams, not Frank Sinatra or any of the others who sang this song!

While this is sad because it was at the time when Lucy and Desi were ending their marriage, it was also sad because Edie and Ernie loved each other dearly until his early death. I will never forget the look on Edie's face in a video as she was leaving Ernie's funeral. Total devastation. :(

It's true what you say, viclagoon. The song itself is beautiful, but when Edie Adams sang it.... What words to describe it? Her version was the best I have ever heard! I saw this episode when I was a young kid and because she sang it so beautifully, I just never forgot it. So you can imagine my anticipation when LDCH finally came out and I can listen to Edie sing all over again. I know this was the saddest episode, but it is also the most moving and the most special.

I read Edie's autobiography, Sing a Pretty Song. What a fantastic life, but not without great tragedy. She was so beautiful, sexy and talented. She and her beloved Ernie were such a fantastic couple.Early t.v.pioneers.Ernie,a spendthrift and gambler, was killed in a tragic auto crash in '62 leaving Edie bereaved and with crushing debts to the IRS among others.Edie worked for years to pay it off. Then their daughter died in another crash 20 years later! Edie Adams,1927-2008. Wonderful Lady.
