After more than two million discs sold with a usual entry in the Top-10 album charts and sold out headlining tours in 39 countries all over Europe, America, Asia and Australia, Germany's "most different" are back with a vengeance with their tenth studio album »Space Police -- Defenders Of The Crown«.
When Heavy Metal was pronounced dead in the early nineties, a bunch of German kids set out from the middle of nowhere to fight all odds and in doing so conquered the hearts of a whole new generation of fans around the globe.
Never trying to live up to expectations of the music industry, press and fans alike, Germany's most successful nineties born Heavy Metal act, paved their way by designing their own cosmos - defined by authenticity, tongues that are firmly planted in cheeks and last but not at least their ongoing love for guitar-driven anthemic powerful music; beyond trends and the pigeonhole of the Heavy Metal archetype.
22 years later, on their tenth album »Space Police -- Defenders Of The Crown« (produced by Sascha Paeth at Gate studio Wolfsburg) EDGUY continue to make things their way. No other band in the universe could do an authentic cover version of the FALCO classic 'Rock Me Amadeus', put it next to the heaviest Power Metal material the band has ever written, sum things up with the self-indulgent anthem 'Love Tyger' and: Get away with it...

    Almost two years later now. I was less than impressed when I first heard this album. But it has grown on me a great deal since then, and now I really love it. I find that some of my favorite music needs many listens before I can appreciate all of the subtlety and thought that went into it. The new Avantasia release sounds awesome too, from the little samples I've heard from it so far.

    1:27 = EPICNESS!!!! This an amazing song, and it´l be even more awesome live. Honestly, i still miss their old power metal, but as far as i´v heard, this album should be kind of a "back to the old stuff", and this song definitely has some elements from that time. But let´s hope that more of their true power metal appears on the rest of the album, ´cause usually, bands pick the most basic and simple song as the album-single. But anyway, Tobi: You did it again!

    Waaah, people whining because "it's too screamy". I loved the recent stuff by Edguy, but this really sounds like a heavier version of Hellfire Club. Insanely awesome- heaviest Edguy I've heard. Personally, I feel his voice sounds more along the lines of 2004-2006. The guy can still sing the old way, but I feel chest voice as he sings in now is far more impressive.

    i really think that they started to be "edguy" from hellfire club till now, the edguy they wanted to be, and not just another ultra fast high tone power metal band, almost a copy of stratovarius, they have grown up, they are not 23 anymore, they make more mature music now, this is the real edguy, i cant understand why people can´t see it and still stuck in the past when they were just starting to know their style. Good stuff.

    I don't understand why Tobi keeps screaming like in the begininnig, he lost the voice he had in the first Edguy and Avantasia album (Reach out for the light? Babylon'?) and the sound is like Invoke The Machine from Avantasia's Mistery of Time, but it's a good track. Hope for a heavy album! ;)

    Have you heard him singing that stuff recently? It's insane, he still sings it well, just in chest voice. Watch their performance in late 2006 at Graspop, and even some of their recent work. I personally feel his voice is more impressive now than it used to be, because he sings everything in chest voice, which is MUCH harder to do.

  • @leostraightedge4life

    I've seen him live during The Mstery World Tour on april 2013 and there's nothing to say, live is amazing. But in this track he uses a voice that i don't like too much ( as in Wicked Simphony's Crestfallen ) and i fear that keeping on singing like that wouldn't be safe for his voice, he could "lose" her. But this is a my personal feeling, i could even be wrong :D we'll see how he worked on the rest of the album :)

  • @jakobfel2

    @jakobfel2

    Haha, true, but I think he knows what he's doing. ;) I'd personally be more concerned with the fact that he smokes/drinks occasionally, as both of those have ruined voices like Geoff Tate and Ray Alder, who had incredible voices in their earlier years.

    Stefan Nicic he meant no more rock, like some of avantasia and their later albums I think a lot of us are glad they're finally going back to the music that made us all love this band initially, heavy and power metal I'd kill for another Mandrake, you don't get more power than Fallen Angels, unless you're listening to Stratovarius, The Pharaoh, etc Though honestly this song doesn't live up to Edguys past, but it's great to see them moving towards Metal again

    Well, I had a little hope that they would incorporate some of their Power Metal roots into this album, or at least a similar Rocket Ride, but I guess they will never do it again. That being said, I'm pleased with this heavier "hard rock" (trying to grow it on me), better than Age of the Joker...Vocally, I prefer the melodic tone, not this constant high pitched screaming. And the lyrics are kinda "meh". Tobi is an amazing song writer, he could create a mystical environment in the songs, like in "The Piper Never Dies", "The Pharaoh", "The Devil and the Savant" or even "Wasted Time". I don't feel that anymore since Rocket Ride. Still, my favorite band.

    ***** "high vocals" and double pedal does not make a sound to be Power Metal. It's the essence, the lyrics, the melody...And I cannot consider this to be Power Metal (which it isn't, of course) nor Heavy Metal.

    ***** Absolutely, Sebastián. One of the reasons why I consider Tobi to be one of the best in the Metal industry (and my favorite) it's his creativity. He's a true mastermind, and maybe that's why I always expect something brilliant from Edguy/Avantasia. I just gave my opinion based on my own preference. Also, I understand his will to try new things, which I completely support his work, no matter what course he chooses to take...Because if it comes from Tobias Sammet, it surely is art.

    Firstly, I am more than certain that Tobi Sammet can still sing like on HellFire Club or Mandrake and proof from the right on this track, he has now taken the footsteps of Klaus, Biff and Bob, however, those who have always had since the early album willy-nilly had to receive only the actual teaching. "Sabre & Torch" sounds like HellFire Club enriched juice from the heaviness of Tinnitus Sanctus and the vocal lines of the great Biff (almost seems written just by the latter). I adore the bass line and the choices "intransigent," that does not seem to impact hit a bat between them, the guitar riffs recall "Invoke the Machine" but the chorus is the vocal line are fully HellFire Club / Mandrake (Nailed to the Wheel) ... Tobi has dropped his voice to Kiske and now sings much of the chest and for me it rocks makes it much more than before, is more expressive and does not tend to overdo it as he once.
