I love the positivity and genuine love of skating that comes from the instructor. I was surprised when she said she had an artificial hip - it clearly hasn’t dimmed her outlook or her love for the sport.

I wonder if this kind of skating, and this approach to skating, to really feeling what you are doing, would be a better direction than learning hard tricks that most people, especially adults, will never have the talent or the time to master. Obviously the skaters in this group are quite talented and have dedicated a lot of time to skating, but I think even lower level skaters could benefit from this approach and may find more pleasure in doing a few simple things with a certain amount of elegance.

how do you glide on one foot? i've been skating for years,,,but i can't do things like skating on one foot or gliding on one foot.......i see so many videos of people skating on one foot and they make it look extremely effortlessly but i cannot seem to get it....? is skating on one foot one of those things that i just won't have success at......(i probably don't need this skill as a hockey player but it bothers me that everyone else can do it but i can't)........ any tips on learning how to do this?

Hope you don’t mind me responding to your question but are you falling onto an inside edge? Try to shift your weight all the way onto your skating foot. If you’re on your right foot think of aligning your right hip, knee and ankle (bend your knee 😊). Watch how the skaters are shifting their weight all the way over onto the right skating foot (lean to the right), bring free foot close to the skating foot and push into new skating foot and shift your weight (lean to the left). Hope that makes sense.

I would think a person who has been skating for years would be able to glide on one foot, but if you can't then it's because of two things: 1) You haven't studied the finer points / fundamentals of skating 2) you haven't deliberately practiced. When you're trying to acquire a skill it's important to first understand the technique and the goal, and then to practice what you are not good at, not just repeat what you already know how to do. Learning will progress very slowly if you do not venture outside of your comfort zone. Forward one-foot glides are learned in the second level of the 6 level Learn To Skate program, you can definitely learn to do it. If you're interested in learning basic technique then why not take some very affordable LTS group lessons. The skills acquired are just more tools in the toolbox.
