Was this one of Poe’s earliest short stories? I remember reading this one when I bought the complete works and it was shortly after the story about the man who took a hot air balloon to the moon. I think he was heading either towards an adventure/mystery story with this one. Boy was it hard to read, though. This one rambled on quite a bit. Not to mention the belittling of Jupiter leans a little towards racism. Still, I think this was oddly progressive for the time to even have him as a character at all. I may talk a lot of huff but I really don’t know if this is a good story or not 😅 At least it’s interesting! Vincent’s narration makes it a lot easier to take in.

Interesting point, good question. Published in 1843, same year as The Black Cat and The Tell-Tale Heart, among others. I agree, Vincent Price delivered an excellent performance.

I am a writer and have wanted to write a book for a very long time. I think this story can fit into the modern narrative of crypto currency. I think this story can be made right!

I have always felt a great affinity to the works of Edgar Allen Poe-m. Truly a staple in Western Literature was his brilliance. Thanks for sharing this gem. Also, this goes to show you that there are other pieces written by Mr. Poe-m, which includes Cryptograms. I heard about this work, in the Manly P. Hall masterpiece, "the Secret Teachings Of the Ages." He mentions this piece and he mentions Sir Francis Bacons (Shakespeare) material, containing genius cryptograms as well.

Throughout the book I was waiting for it to become horror, and resigned myself to it being a mediocre adventure story about half way through. So man, that ending sent a chill down my spine.
