It's actually a common misconception that Absinthe causes hallucinations. Absinthe contains thujone which is found in wormwood (one of the components used to make absinthe). Go watch Matty_Rere's episode of I'm Into That with them, or really any of their stuff on their own channel, Watcher, and you can see that Shane's clearly joking, they're obviously really good friends outside of the show :)

@@sadmermaid Except that they are actually friends, extremely close friends, they're just good at doing professional stuff together as well because they became friends THROUGH work, so the whole "don't go into business with friends" rule is kind of a moot point

Alcohol withdrawal actually can cause hallucinations. My aunt went cold turkey and hallucinated my uncle had killed himself. Actually a very plausible theory if he hadn’t drank for about a day or two

Yeah, alcohol withdrawal are the most dangerous withdrawal, I think? I'm a sober drug addict but the alcoholics always seemed to have it worse off.

I had a seizure and was hospitalized while quitting drinking. I hallucinated for several days, from being confused to why I was covered in blood being loaded into an ambulance (hit my head when I collapsed) to getting discharged 3 days later the whole thing felt like It took place in a separate reality. If it wasn’t for the very real bills I would have thought the whole thing was a dream.

Also, absinthe at the time was not the most well regulated alcohol. Many distillers of cheap absinthe would cut their product with other substances in order to cut down the cost. Also, good absinthe is distilled from wormwood, which means, again considering the lack of oversight, that it very easily could become dangerous when consumed in large quantities
