You are correct, thus the term shines comes from the exchange between the tap dancers and the mambo dancers footwork during the cotton club era, all was under one roof. Further an influence of Afro_Cubano Machito and Tito Puente adapted and fused African-American big band jazz swing with Latin Rhythms. As Tito stated, "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing." Many young salsa dancers couldn't understand why as an older dancer my footwork was fluid, it's because years ago while frequenting the NY Mambo clubs during an earlier Eddie Torres era, also I took up tap dancing which teaches you everything about syncopation just like I learned Bomba Puertorriqueña dancing. I know I am correct after dancing in NY and Puerto Rico, I did just fine. Here's a definition for syncopation: Tap dance numbers typically punctuate the first or eighth beat count, which creates a syncopated beat. Tap steps often follow the irregular rhythm or harmony of a song, using the tapping of the footwork to create an added layer of percussion. So, yes you are correct, you are seeing an influence of tap dancing or shines, which meant your shoes had to have a high gloss mirror like spit shine, thus why patent leather shoes are popular dance shoes.

Best comment here! Teach them!! The history gets lost and the soul and purpose of the dance moves along with it! New dancers don’t realize they’re mimicking watered down, off beat spins from the wrong dances (cheap versions of cumbia) instead of dancing with connection and emotion. The syncopation and musicality expressed through your body and feet connects the heartbeat of the music to the earth. Like Eddy Amador said, “It’s a spiritual thing, a body thing, a soul thing”.
