Boogie Down was Eddie Kendricks’ second number one R&B smash for three weeks on February 9-23,1974 ending Eddie’s former group the Temptations’ one week run with Let Your Hair Down. Then afterwards,Eddie’s three week run ended when the Spinners replaced him at the top with Mighty Love. On the pop charts,Boogie Down has just missed being his second number one smash peaking at number two for two weeks exactly one month later on March 9-16,1974 right behind Terry Jacks’ Seasons In The Sun.

On this day in 1974 {April 27th} Eddie Kendricks performed "Boogie Down" on the nationally syndicated television program, 'Soul Train'... At the time the song was at position #39 on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart, eleven weeks earlier it had peaked at #1 {for 3 weeks}... The song "Boogie Down" replaced at #1 was "Let Your Hair Down", which was recorded by his former group, the Temptations... And on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, "Boogie Down" peaked at #2 for two weeks, for the two weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for both of those weeks was "Seasons In The Sun" by Terry Jacks... Between 1971 and 1988 the Alabama native had twenty-six records on the Hot Soul Singles chart, nine made the Top 10 with three* reaching the #1 position... Besides the above "Boogie Down", his two other #1 records were "Keep On Truckin'" for two weeks in 1973 and "Shoeshine Shoe" for one week in 1975... Sadly, Edward James Kendrick passed away at the young age of 52 on October 5th, 1992 {lung cancer}... May both he and Don Cornelius {1936 - 2012} R.I.P. *He just missed having a fourth #1 record when his "He's A Friend" peaked at #2 for three weeks, and for the three weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for those three weeks was "Disco Lady" by Johnnie Taylor...

I haven’t listened to this for years, I didn’t realise it was 73,Motown had some great Disco releases - the firs 7” single at the front of 1 of my two record boxes is Love Hangover by Diana Ross from 75ish it’s way ahead of its time and stood the test of time just like this tune. The later years lots of artists/groups/ jumped on the Disco train, but just shows how good the groove was. - Chic were a saviour ‘At last, Disco with some style’ that’s what I said when my older brother played the record he’d just bought - Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah x3) Soz, once someone mentions Disco I can go on a bit : ) . Yep so 1973 early years : ) I’m wondering now what year the term ‘Disco Music’ appeared.?

@@FUNKINETIK I believe prior to 1973 it was called "discotheque rock". An article in Rolling Stone talking about symphonic R&B music being played in discos. The rest is history. Check out, "Win, Place or Show", by the Intruders, 1972. After some serious studying, this is the first completely disco song. Although, the Theme from Shaft is right there. I consider myself a disco aficionado… Lol… Cheers
