How is Eddie presenting any type of challenge when Eddie has been Eddie forever? Seriously. I have been following her career for ages - the only "issues" and "challenges" are those being created NOW by woke people. Like literally, they know each other - why would he have a hard time talking to a PERSON? Stop with all this silliness - there is no problem here - put your energies into places where real help is needed. One love - no b.s.

@superfluous saxicole, someone biologically one sex can never ever know what it actually feels like to be the other sex. They can know what it feel like to be themselves and not like that feeling or think that makes them different from others, but that's not the same as what you're saying. As for someone "telling you to be something you're not", it's irrelevant here, because we're talking about something people actually *are*.

I know, right? I'm genderfluid and it's good to see someone out as such on TV and proud of it! I just wish folks would talk about us on TV and in movies so I wouldn't have had to find out what I was from webcomics. Heck, I hadn't even heard of Eddie Izzard until after I figured out my gender identity. We never show up anywhere and I'm tired of it, we need more representation. I am glad to have Eddie though, what a wonderful person. Truly marvellous.

@@raynemichelle2996 , I looked for what Izzard had said, and my interpretation is that she didn't endorse Rowling's opinions or say others should agree with it. It seemed like more of a comment on "cancel culture" and a criticism of the intense backlash that Rowling has gotten. And calling for unity between cis women and trans folk, as we have all been marginalized and are stronger together than separate. And, it's like, Izzard is part of the trans community. She's genderfluid and has been out and proud for a long time. Should Rowling be allowed to use her relative privilege as an educated, white, and now extremely wealthy and famous cis woman to advance potentially harmful opinions about transfolk? I would say, absolutely not. A member of the majority (because cis > trans, in Western societies at least), it is irresponsible of her to use her platform to try and advance negative stereotypes about AMAB trans women being sexual predators. Should Izzard be allowed to use her platform to share her opinions on trans issues? Well, yeah, no duh. She's trans. I remember before I was out as genderfluid, I was talking to a mixed group of cis and trans people about trans identity, and used a quote from Carmen Carrera, a transgender model and former drag queen who transitioned publicly. An out trans person immediately dismissed what I said because "Carmen Carrera was problematic to the trans community." I was like...but...she is trans. We can't police each other. We have no right. We have to allow other trans people to have different opinions. That's the only way to be an actual functioning community. EDIT: spelling

@@janeeyre1990 I agree. I'm also trans, and I'll cancel JK Rowling if I want to, even though I'm against cancel culture, as it assumes people can't change or that people who make mistakes should be thrown away. If JK Rowling apologized and changed her views about Trans people, then I would uncancel her in my life, but until then, nope. And some trans folks have shitty views. Caitlyn Jenner is a prominent example. I don't have to respect every trans person's views just because they're trans.

Same. And, in re the conversation going on down here, it’s an important part of understanding the rich variety of human experience and of fully humanizing marginalized identities to remember that people can be wrong. That’s one hundred percent allowed. They don’t even have to be bad- just wrong on a topic. That is a thing that happens. Or if you look at Caitlin Jenner or Blaire White- wrong and pretty unpleasant. Also a thing that happens. Life is a rich tapestry, people of every identity can and will sometimes be that. Natalie Wynn has pointed out that cancellation of the Problematic can have a transitive property; going back to Rowling here to illustrate. Rowling is a monster. We know this. This has been the center of a lot of pain and suffering. And there have been people who have looked at that, shrugged, and gone “well, that doesn’t matter to me, still good books though”, or worse, actively agreed with and supported her bigotry. That’s all one thing. Canceling those people as well makes sense. However, then we get into people like Eddie- people who are part of the marginalized group in question!- who do not condemn Rowling thoroughly and soundly and want instead to talk about how cancel culture and the culture of disposability can be used kind of indiscriminately. Is that endorsing transphobia? To a reasonable person, absolutely not. Y’all are absolutely right. It’s necessary to our survival to have solidarity. People who actively want trans folks to stop existing don’t care about the purity of our politics.
