Ed Sullivan had a talent for talent- bringing in the best of the best, new or established, regardless of race, creed, or color. He was one of the few who truly used the power of television to its full potential. And there will never be another one like him again.

Ed Sullivan created the variety show. CBS canceled him without cause, no notice. He held his head high. He booked without concern for race, pace or genre. Pretty good for a newspaper columnist.

Not entirely true…the network had informed both Ed and his son-in-law, Bob Precht (the show’s producer) in early March, 1971, that the program would not be renewed for the ‘71-‘72 season….broke Ed’s heart

Sometimes, the most important talent is supporting and presenting others who have it. STILL miss Ed Sullivan after all these decades!

Again, He should be in The Rock & Rol Hall of Fame.

No, the TV Hall Of Fame. Ed booked acts for his TV ratings. He didn't book acts to advance rock music or the careers of the performers. He did not care for rock music. So why in the world should he be in the R&R HOF?

We did not see this in the UK in his lifetime but seeing him on KZread you can see the influence his shows had on the public and on showbiz.

He is STILL the most famous resident of Port Chester NY (my home town). The village just named a street after him. My Uncle (by marriage) was good friend of his in High School. I never met him..but my uncle knew him quite well and my father used to run into him at the local golf courses. He was quite cordial to the locals even after he became a celebrity.

His show was simulcasted on CBC here in Canada for most of its run and everyone, whether they spoke French or English, would watch. It had universal appeal.

He would often remind his Canadian viewers to "stay tuned for the 'WAYNE & SHUSTER' special".

The debt we owe Sullivan we can never repay. We are still discovering kinescope of historic figures in popular culture and slices of our cultural heritage of astonishing importance. If you are a student of popular American music history, Broadway, Vaudeville, rock, jazz, blues, classical, even opera, your best hope of finding any video of a live performance will be in those vaults. Its not just the Beatles, or Presley. Just a few months ago, I saw the ONLY VIDEO and audio of the great Gertrude Lawerence performing any of her Broadway or West End stage performances. A year before her death, there she is singing numbers from The King and I in costume in 1951. Those of us who are history buffs of that art form, can add it to over a hundred other recreations of stage performances Sullivan has kept tucked safely away for decades. I am not sure you can name another figure more responsible for changing the way we saw segregation. He brought more black talent into our homes than anyone else. He shook Nat King Cole's hand and put his arm around Bill Bojangles Robinson in the forties,, and kissed Pearl Bailey's cheek in the early fifties.

Now you just have to add the stars of the country Hall of Fame, the great vaudevillians, the Tony award winners, the jazz and blues artists, the comedians, the circus acts, mimes, classical musicians, opera singers, the pop, crooners, balladeers, and recording artists, it just does not stop.

It was from a series of specials the network had given Ed to compensate for cancelling his weekly program..I believe it was two a year for two years…1971-72, and 1972-73

Sullivan was one of a kind. He had no apparent talent but he was a savvy judge of what his audience would like. He agued with his producers about certain acts especially the musical ones like the Beatles. He was usually right. His show was the longest running variety show. His way of talking inspired impressionests to imitate his way of introducing acts. He actually did say " really big show" but after imitations if him said " really big show", he started saying it like that. He liked the impressionests' takes on him and laughed at himself. He replaced Red Skeleton on Red's show when Red was out for a while. He was actually really good. He was as funny as Red in many ways. It's on U Tube. Pull it up and watch. ( I meant really big shew but my spell check changed it and I didn't notice )

It was horrible that CBS cancelled his long running shew just two seasons short of what would have become its silver anniversary….it was attributed to the so called “Rural Purge” as well as Ed being too old…yet the network had no problem renewing “Lucy” and “Gunsmoke”…go figure

What was the "rural purge" ? .........btw, Gunsmoke was one of the best TV shows ever, and was still good right up to the end, although Amanda Blake left before the last season. James Arness, Ken Curtis and Milburn Stone were still going strong.

Bill Paley who owned CBS liked Gunsmoke and prevented its cancellation during the rural purge. Most of the shows cancelled had viewer demographics that skewed older and rural and hence were unappealing to advertisers. I must assume that Lucy did not suffer from that.

he made the right decision to drag TV into the present with stuff like The Mary Tyler Moore show. Advertisers were behind the shift to urban shows

Fred Silverman cancelled Ed in 1971; Sullivan's ratings had dropped, he was running third in his time period. Silverman said it was tough to do, Ed was part of the family, but it had to be done.

He brought in The Doors but then they blacklisted them when Jim Morrison used the word "higher" a drug term in their hit Light My Fire. When Ed got peeved at them and told them they're not allowed to perform for the show again, Jim reacted with "Hey, we just DID the Ed Sullivan show."

The rilly big shew was rilly over. 😢

Back in those decades a TV show that ran for 10 years was equivalent to TV shows today that have ran for 20 years. Yet his show ran for nearly 25 years. Incredible. At the time in the 1970s his show, Gunsmoke and Lassie all on CBS were the longest running TV shows. TV has never been the same since the last of his and Jack Benny's new shows and specials aired. A great gem of TV shows and specials from 1948 to 1973. His last show aired on June 6, 1971. He did Flip Wilson Show guest appearances, the Tonight Show Guest Appearance in 1972 and a few TV specials his last in 1973. The 1970s marked the end of the era of the greatest entertainment medium personalities in not only the 20th century but in all of American history. I didn't mention the deaths of Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby and Groucho Marx in 1977. So many in the 1970s. Sad future generations will never experience live growing up with in their youth to adulthood.

People in general presented themselves much classier back then.

I fondly remember watching the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite at that time. I remember Hughes Rudd mentioning this on the CBS Morning News.

These were great times, this was a good man, and today great is not heard of much anymore, and there's nothing good about today,,,,,this world sucks! Sorry.💘 I'm just saying.

Jack Benny came on the show one time and asked Ed, point blank, "What do you do here?" Ed responded, "I introduce the acts." Jack then replied, "You don't sing. You don't dance. You merely introduce the acts. Well, Ed, how much do you make on the show?" As seriously as possible, Ed replied, "Jack, I think I make about 18 million dollars." Then he corrected, "18 **THOUSAND** dollars. I raised it but I'm going to cut it down." Jack then turned to the audience and smirked, "He's READING it and he got it wrong!!" Even Ed laughed at THAT one!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 We really need another Ed Sullivan - someone who could do his job without calling attention to himself. Ed knew the guests were the stars, and he was just there to hold everything together, and he did it perfectly like no one else.
