I have seen great brush players on You Tube, but not a lot of great, or even good, explanations. You nail it on both counts! Thank you.

Super super cool. I've only experimented with right hand sweeping to a degree. This is great advice.

Mr. Soph is probably one of the finest educators on this subject. Note: Ed mentioned going counter clockwise, when he’s actually going clockwise. Lol. His advice on ignoring the shape is perfect! If it sounds good, the shape is correct. I might add, another legendary educator is Steve Houghton. His mantra is “Can’t sing, can’t play!” Go chew on that for a while kids.

Thanks Ed & Evans for this great series - sync issue still weird for side cam section but regardless, this is great for intermediate or advanced players.

Still trying to figure this out with the camera being off a beat - is the left hand accent happening when he slides to the left, counter clockwise (like throwing a frisbee lefty)? Because it feels more natural to me to accent when I am sliding to the right, clockwise.

Update - I emailed Ed and he confirmed the video is out of sync, and he is sliding to the left on 2 and 4.

Yes, it took me a while to figure out this part. Around 1:30, I think the sound is a beat off the video. So the 1s and 3s are switched with 2s and 4s.

The right side camera angle at 1:38 & 2:38 show the accent happening on the right side of the drum when it is really happening of the left. The front camera angle shows where it is really happening.

It seems that, when the camera is on the right side of the snare, the sound is not synchronized with the movement of the brush. Hum ?

Nice Stuff. One of my memories of Ed Soph is a recording of La Fiesta with Woody Herman. His brush work in 3/4 is wonderful and not easy to replicate faithfully. Note - @EvansPercussion: It sounds like the audio my not be totally in sync. Tough to correlate soundwise exactly where some of the brush accents are. Maybe review the editing and check it out? Otherwise thanks much for the wonderful instructional and thanks to Ed as well.
