What amazes me is how no alarm bells rang when an XO who is known to her superiors for having cheated on her husband a fellow officer wants to transfer to her ex-partners ship lol! Why didn't the medical officer who was assigned the Orville so he didn't feck it up say something regardless of staffing issues!

They showed it in the first episode that she convinced the superiors and was responsible for him getting command of the ship in the first place. He only finds out about it way later.

@@mattsathrohan288 Yes. But the difference between this being a Family Guy punchline or something that can work long term really matters. If this didn't get properly delved into later, it would turn into a Joe/Bonnie kind of thing where what was funny at first just became sad and depressing.

While I've loved the interplay between the characters, I can't help but think that if this was reality, no organization would pair together two divorcees together as a command team like this. If the divorce wasn't amicable, the potential for interpersonal conflicts and leadership problems would be way too high.

Daniel Haire The thing of it is that Kelly actually pulled a few strings in order to get Ed this command. And like the Admiral said, one of the only reason both of them were given this posting was because the positions needed to be filled, and they were one of the few qualified candidates. The Orville isn't a flag ship like the Starship Enterprise on Star Trek. The Admiral told Ed it's a mid-class exploratory vessel, which gives the impression that the Admiralty probably figured that if this did end up being a mistake, it wouldn't hurt the fleet that much, and they could always move on to the next worthy candidates. Despite his recent performance, Ed had a pretty decent record, as did Kelly. And due to their advanced technology and superior knowledge, aptitude assessment has probably become more effective in their time. Think of why Lamar was put in the running for Chief Engineer due to his high aptitude scores when he'd served mainly as navigator at that point. The Admiralty probably put a lot of trust in the skill compatibility assessment.

Couple with above with the old boys club Kelly took advantage of. Someone in the service owed her favor. She called it in. Now she owes someone a favor. Command on TV has maintained a veneer of professionalism because... well, it is. Professionalism should be the rule in any organization or you end up with STD... ... But there is also the personal dynamic between the people behind the uniform. The Union doesn't like it but everyone knows it happens. And just like when Ed and Kelly let Topa's detransitioning happen an Admiral came in and chewed them out. Not because she felt they were wrong, but because they disobeyed an order. Ofc it was more complex than that, but that admiral knew what was going on behind the scenes and could read between the lines well enough to know that if she didn't come down hard this time... they might do something again, and it might not work out so well for them.

I just watched the pilot episode. I loved it. The casting, directing, budget, attention to detail. As a writer, I especially appreciated the plot line and the dialog. All world-class. The execution was terrific. Watch just the first 60 seconds and notice the detail in the opening scene when his personal craft flies in. You see people walking on their balconies and all kinds of vehicles flying around. MacFarlane's brand of humor is truly funny without descending into mindlessness. To get a 7.6 rating on IMDB is saying a lot for IMDB, as they don't seem to appreciate sci-fi comedies. This is my new favorite show, hands down.

The Orville... Well it didn't pouch Trek talent as trek had been off the air and Nu Trek pushed out alot of experienced Trek people... But the opening goes to show the difference between new people, and people who have been doing Trek awhile. I hope the experienced Trek production team have young bloods in the team to learn from the old hands. Much like 2D animation, if the crop of talent we have retires, then this style of 3D setting and attention to detail would have to be relearned. And why relearn something when it can be passed down?

In a military environment you can't have two person who is in a relationship working in the same chain of command. And you can't have two person who are having an ACTIVE gravence or dispute working directly together. But being an ex-wife regardless of fidelity doesn't apply to either. So while common sense says her request should not go through, it is technically not against any protocol. And if you watched the show you will know why things happened the way it did.

A ship captain that has spotty service record which might push him to the edge and could defected to any hostile factions.

Kelly Grayson is a villain. A Manchurian Candidate. A sleeper assassin. The premise of Kelly bringing about the termination of all biological life in the universe seems consistent with her cold-heartedness and Kaylon lack of empathy, in the way she continually hurts Ed. Her character is relentless in the cold-pursuit of love-betrayal and desire to keep Ed isolated from happiness. The last episode of season 2 revealed her as the Time Lord who brought about the annihilation of half the beings in the galaxy. A lot like Thanos from the Marvel universe. I do not trust or feel comfortable with the character and the way that she is portrayed. Her humane qualities always seem to have a slight ulterior motive, and she is forever smugly rejecting Ed's honesty about his feelings towards her. She did the same thing to her last boyfriend in season 2. It's okay if she cheats or ends the relationships. Which she did in both cases with Ed. I don't think that the way Ed is portrayed as being okay with everything that she does is realistic or honest. That's one of the major problems I have with this series and its story. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this season she turns out to be the Amber Heard of The Orville. But we shall see what they do with this. I don't know if this is being written as such, or if they just don't see it because the main characteristic of the character is her stunning good looks and the way she has so much power over Ed's mind and heart. Something has to be done about her attitude and her lack of Candor and honesty. And something should be done about Ed's attitude and behavior about this whole business that keeps him under her thumb. It's not a safe place to be in the universe as we have found out last season.
