Another great clip of a richly deserving winner. Actually this was a surprise win The odds on favorite was Sharif in a star making part. The sustained applause and whistles demonstrate the veteran actor's popularity in the Hollywood community. Great seeing Victor Buono and Telly. Terence has never attended an Oscarcast (this is his sole nod to date!). If memory serves, Peter O'Toole also did not attend that night. Such great memories!

An extraordinary list of nominees that year. I would have placed Ross Martin among them for his asthmatic predator in Experiment in Terror instead of Terence Stamp who was (arguably) the lead in Billy Budd. And I loved Victor Buono's songwriting mama's boy in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? but Ed Begley was the correct choice. He was hardly the prettiest actor ever to win an Oscar, but his despicable Boss Finley was one of the best-played villains of the period, utterly without conscience or redemption. A most worthy interpretation of Tennessee Williams. Sweet Bird of Youth, what a movie. (Great title, too.)

A funny bit of trivia: In one of his interviews, Omar Sharif said that before the Oscars that year everyone told him that he was a shoo-in to win and the director of Lawrence of Arabia, David Lean, even coached him on how to react when they announced his name and then walk slowly to the stage. Well, as Rita Moreno was about to read the name of the winner, Omar had already stood up and started walking slowly, as he was instructed to, towards the stage, then of course he heard Ed's name and realized he didn't win! He slinked back to his table, feeling very embarrassed, only to be comforted by Mary Badham, who was nominated for best supporting actress (To Kill a Mockingbird) and only 11 at the time :)

All right, that's your opinion and this is mine. (Just so you know, though, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion to everyone that Sharif was going to be victorious that year, and it floored people when Begley instead got it.) And, also, I don't profess that the "Brinks" line originated from me (I'm not that smart nor witty). To be honest, I really didn't know WHO said it first. I've just heard it sporadically over the years and always thought that it was a humorous saying. Marx didn't have the monopoly on using it, however. If that's the case everyone would constantly have to come up with original sayings for forms of expression, and no one could copy anyone else.

The Academy robbed him twice, for Lawrence and Dr Zhivago. Who remembers Ed Begley or his work in a forgotten film? An actor's greatest award is longevity and Omar had that. People remember Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago and Funny Girl. That's what the real award is for any filmmaker or actor. Alfred Hitchcock and George Lucas never won Oscars, yet their work will be remembered for a longer time than the work of Tom Hooper.
