Just subscribed to your chanel you have beautiful plants. The bicolor’s roots I don’t believe are rotted as mine do look like that and that plant has taken off like wildfire. I think soil with perlite and tree fern fiber has been a huge game changer with not just my anthuriums but also my philos.

Welcome aboard, glad to have you here! And I think you're absolutely right, the older roots still look like (brown, a little dry, but still healthy) that on my P. bicolor and it's pushing new growth and new roots as well. So far all of my seedlings (and some smaller rehabs) that have gone into TFF mixes (I'm getting tired of writing tree fern fibre, 😂) are doing way better than anything I have in solely perlite or sphagnum moss. I find that it holds moisture quite well and that it dries out more evenly than sphagnum, which tends to dry out super quickly on top with any kind of even mild airflow. This is pretty important (to me, at least), particularly in my grow tent where I have fans on timers along with an inline duct fan. So yeah -- outside of the cost (💰) I am a huge fan of the TFF!

Heya, thanks for the comment! Ecuagenera just had their 30th anniversary sale last week (ended a couple of days back), so I hope you had a chance to snag one if they happened to be discounted. 😉

Hey Dave - awesome to have you here! I'm a sub on your channel, too, great stuff. Loved that spiritus sancti video + the "boring hoyas" one from a couple of months back. Just saw that you posted an Anthurium tour... added it to my watch list for tomorrow. Hope you enjoy - any suggestions or feedback are absolutely welcome!

Hey, sorry for the late reply, was away with the family for a week! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for being here. 😊 Hah, yes, I tried attending the first 3 or 4 shows after they restarted them post-COVID, but the lineups were really long and my kids were getting super antsy waiting in line. I also found that the selection at the pop-ups is pretty thin, particularly if you don't get there right as they open up. It's also basically full retail price + the USD-CAD exchange rates on-site are generally worse. These days I just order during their sales (which are so often that you'll catch one easily enough) and pick things up at the next show they have here in Vancouver. Makes life a lot easier and I can still browse around if I see anything interesting while I'm there, and don't need to stress fighting over the high-end stuff. Best of both worlds. 😉

    Maybe anthurium friedrichsthalii 😮

Haha, yes, that is yet another option... I think personally I like the strappy Anthuriums that have more of a matte texture and can size up more, I think A. friedrichsthalii is a little smaller and more compact, with a shiny leaf texture. It does look nice since it's a little brighter green, though. Kind of reminds me of the adaxial of the P. bicolor, at least in photos. I wouldn't say no if someone offered me one, though. 😉

Any update on the wendlingeri? I'm considering ordering one from Ecuagenera but I'm hesitant looking at the non existent roots on yours. I'm from Winnipeg (no pop up shows in Manitoba) so I'll need to order home delivery, which it's quite expensive (CAD 50) + the price of the plant😢

Hey Sara - ok, so TL;DR is I managed to root it from the top node that already had some aerial roots budding, although those bottom “roots” (if you could call them that) were in rough shape and never amounted to much of anything. Long story is that I killed the plant. This really had nothing to do with the roots besides the fact that they dried out before I noticed they had dry rot. I had the wendli with 3-4 other imports in a prop box on a heat mat in my big tent and missed at least one watering. When I realized it was bone dry I watered but it was obviously too late and the roots rotted out completely. By the time I noticed the rot (it was kind of out of sight, unfortunately), there was nothing left to save and the last remaining node had already been infiltrated by rot. I tried to save it but there wasn’t enough left to root. So, lesson learned - need to repot to semihydro a lot sooner or at least move things to a transitional substrate if I’m going to sit on it while acclimating (and being super lazy.) Good news is that I picked up a new one from better original stock - I got an NSE Wendlingeri from a plant friend in Eastern Canada and that one is nicely rooted in moss and doing great so far. At the end of the day it’s a plant with better genetics than the one I got from Ecuagenera, and I ended up paying less for it than I had before, so I’ll take it. BTW, I’ve seen some NSE wendlis floating around for around $75 CAD + shipping recently if you want to take a stab at it. I think Amy A. (@bare.root.contessa on IG) had some for sale earlier this month if you want to give that a shot instead.

@@theproppist It was a rough ride but I'm glad everything worked out fine in the end🙏 You're so lucky to find a established NSE Wendlengeri for sale here in Canada. I'm so excited for you! 🎉 I ended up buying yesterday a Wendlengeri on Etsy from a store called Plant Haus Co in Toronto. It's my first time buying from them. I don't know if it's the real deal but the plant seems to be a good size and it was on sale (CAD 45+50 for shipping, heat pack and taxes). Wish me luck🤞 Love your channel! Please keep us updated on your new wendlengeri. It's a real gem of a plant.

Will do, Sara! I have seen wendlis floating around for pretty reasonable prices so I hope the one you got works out for you! You may also want to take a look into eshipper.com or netparcel.com, I've used the former quite a bit and it saves a lot on shipping within Canada at least. I can get overnight Purolator or Fedex for basically wholesale prices. Also, when you're dropping that much on shipping, I find it a lot less painful to batch a couple of plants (particularly seedlings or cuttings) in the same order to make it more cost effective. I haven't heard of the seller you mentioned specifically, but they seem relatively legit from the web site, IG & Etsy shop. I've found some solid smaller sellers on Etsy lately that have more than made up for some of the absolute garbage you find on that platform specifically when ordering from outside North America. 😉 Let me know how things work out for you with that order!

It's all good, but I appreciate the sentiment! The plant is still kicking -- the aerial root I showed in the video is growing well so the plant's still healthy. I'll do an update in a few weeks, most of the Anthuriums did pretty well from that order. It's the Philodendrons from Ecuagenera that are pretty hit-or-miss most of the time!
